What Would Be The Backstory To This?

On YouTube, it is entitled, "North Korea children playing the guitar. Creepy as hell." The top commenters said, "Forced to play 18hours a day from birth doesn't really make me jeolous.." and, "There good because if they miss a note, they don't get fed." (Verbatim, including the spelling)

I don't know how I'd perceive this if I didn't first see the YouTube title setting the tone. I know very weird stuff goes on in North Korea , but I'd be curious to know more if there is a specific story about these children that these commenters are referring to. These kids are extraordinary guitarists, whatever the story behind them. My toddler, innocent of the political and cultural baggage that burdens adults, enjoyed watching them and protested when I tried to switch to another video.

why not just sit and enjoy the great talent without having to make it into yet another boring negative political statement.

i have little doubt, in almost any other culture they would be highly acclaimed

at least i have been to north korea

MAN, ALL choreographed!!!!!! They DID make several mistakes! Does that mean they didn't get fed? They DID do well. And EVERYTHING was choreographed! Even the head nods!

Sorry to change the subject, but during the whole recital, my burning question was why did the boys have to wear tights?

They would have sounded just as well without them.

Sorry, but it distracted me the whole time.

I hadn't noticed. I was shocked at how they were apparently using adult guitars with such TINY hands, and did so well.

          Ahh, I see.

I did notice that right away too and thought that it must hurt their arms, but then noticed the tights.

I guess being a fashionista can be a curse. :p

many young children learn on full size guitars as that is what is in the house

i did and once i started showing genuine interest my father helped me. no doubt he lived to regret it. by age eleven i had gone electric. the only little guitar i ha was a ukelele.

just appreciate the talent, if you can, but i never read the comments

OK, I noticed it to, and thought it odd. If it was to protect their legs from the guitars, why not just wear long pants. Males used to wear tights in the West and...

        ...some still do.
