Major Identity Theft Concern

I'm looking for opinions and facts for this one, but yesterday I registered on Namecheap (dotcom). They said there were some concerns with fraud and that I need to send them my passport, DL, and photo of my credit card. Then, today HostGator (dotcom) just ask for the same info.

Now, I'm not sure why my credit info is showing fraud in any concern, but that is besides the point.

I can understand at the store, where someone looks at your stuff verifies it and gives it back to you, but why are web owners and businesses asking for copies. That should be illegal in my opinion. Anyone can type up a Privacy Policy, but how in the world am I to know what happens with my personal information once I click the send button. It's gone forever and to whoever.

Has anyone experience this with the two sites in question? Can I trust them? And, frankly I'm simply shocked that they asked me to send this information in the first place.

    This is from HostGator:

In order for us to setup your account, we will need you to call us and verify your account. If you are not able to call, you can also respond to this ticket with a scanned copy of a Photo ID such as as a passport, or drivers license. Also please include a scanned copy of the credit card that was used in purchase, if you purchased a hosting account with a credit card. Please do so at your earliest convenience to ensure that your account with HostGator is setup as soon as possible.

    Toll-free: 1-866-96-GATOR
    International: 001-713-574-5287
Try calling them to verify your info and do the same with Namecheap.

Sorry KimW aka MR. CRANKY if you don't take identify theft as serious as I do. Sorry, that your willing to give your credit card info and DL to every willy nilly website owner in town in a (non secure email).

Identity theft is a major concern and not just for markets who have to send a refunds. Protecting myself will always be my first concern.

eh8974, I believe Kim was asking where you are from, as in what country, as this would help him to better provide you with an informed answer to your query.

"Mr. Cranky" is one of the good guys here.

Unless Kim edited his post, I don't see the need for your snarky reply. Asking you where you're from is a valid question as some countries cause red flags for certain online vendors and the vendors require additional information.

        Mr. eh8974,

Just a bit of friendly advice. New people coming riding in here on their black horse, sporting a bad attitude, with guns a blazing, taking potshots at well respected and experienced warriors doesn't set too well with the native warriors.

Just because we are called warriors doesn't mean we are cocked and ready to fight. As a matter of fact besides having fun, we actually like to offer help to the new community members just as some people bring casseroles as housewarming gifts to new neighbors offline.

We indeed are warriors, but what we battle against is dishonesty, lack of integrity and honor, etc., as well as spammers, scammers, and ripoff artists. But most certain of all, we war against attacks on our own.

Just a heads up before you try to blast another warrior first and ask questions later. Attitude most certainly determines altitude here. Please check yours and proceed with caution.

Yep, seems to be becoming the norm nowadays. Try to help someone and they get snarky.

Yes Mr eh8974,IF that;s your real name, I was trying to see if you were from a country that might have issues,as I have been a customer of both namecheap (I have 20 some domains registered there) and Hostgator (yep, you guessed it, I have 20 some domains hosted there) for several years now.

I also have a friend that works for hostgator that I might have possibly been able to get some insight for you,but suddenly the desire to help has left my body.

No Dan, I did not edit my post, that's exactly what I asked. Where was he from, since he had no location listed.

    Edit:
    By the way Mr eh8974,
Are you a professional psychic? You seem to know so much about me already I'm amazed. especially this part:
"Sorry KimW aka MR. CRANKY if you don't take identify theft as serious as I do. Sorry, that your willing to give your credit card info and DL to every willy nilly website owner in town in a (non secure email)."

You know my habits dead to rights.

Tell you what, for the low price of $19.95 I will send you my ebook, "Internet Safety and YOU"
No cc needed, just PayPal it to me.

    eh8974,

They have done similar things with me. I HAVE only dealt with big companies in that regard. I had TWO clients that asked for my UNENCRYPTED SSN number. I told them *********NO WAY********! The state I am in is asking me for a LOT to get MY property back, and I told them NO WAY! eventually, I might sue.

I opened up a foreign bank account, and THEY asked for my passport! REASONABLE! The US is SUPPOSED to ask for SSN, and the passport is the only international equivalent.

Now, there are about 20 countries that are BLACK LISTED! If you are there, and want to work with a company like a webhost, KOWTOW, and be HAPPY they will even THINK of doing business with you! That is NOT their fault/problem, it is due to the countries populace!

When I first started online marketing you used to pay via credit card by sending 1/2 the number in one email and the other half in a different email. .
Times have changed a lot since then.

Yeah, maybe with DUMB merchants! BTW, the first half of the numbers of a credit card can be virtually GUESSED by a mere GLANCE at the credit card, even if ALL are covered! The FEW possibilities can be verified by testing the whole set through the MOD10 algorithm.

SERIOUSLY! It is NOT as secret as you may think. The first portion says:

      1. TYPE of card(visa/mastercard)
      2. Company(chase, bank of america, etc...)
      3. Their department(slate, rewards, etc....)

The LAST part says it is for you.

Oh - that's easy - he came here for "an answer" - and wants "a solution" - and anything less or any question is off limits because he's in a hurry.

I think someone who doesn't want to say where they're from - knows why info verification is being requested.

I'm currently in Kuwait, but I'm from the USA - Georgia to be exact and that is where my billing address is. I figure my problem stems from the IP address in the fraud protection system.

Now, if use a proxy server and change my IP back to a US IP, I usually have no problems, that is a hassle and dishonest. (just my opinion)

However I have to admit I wrote my question out of frustration with the big companies always demanding things of a personal nature from customers. So yes Mr. Cranky you question caught me a little of guard, but I was unaware of your Warrior Status in the forums, my apologies.

All in all I still feel that it is unmoral for a business or person to subject me to identify theft in order to protect themselves from a fraudulent purchase.

    Thanks Guys,
    Earl

OH OH!!!!!! I BELIEVE kuwait was on some fraud lists, but doesn't appear to be so now. AVS AS WELL as IP geolocation can show your billing address is diffferent, and THAT flags you! If you were in the US, but not in georgia, and MAILED them an order, AVS would catch you!

AVS has been around for decades and was literally BUILT to do JUST THIS!

I had a relationship with a company for YEARS!!!!! ONE DAY, there was a HUGE delay! I checked, and MAN was I surprised! They started checking and delayed my order because it was NOT to my billing address. OK! FAIR! UNDERSTANDABLE! ******NORMALLY*****! But I spent THOUSANDS with them. SERIOUSLY, I spent almost $1000 a MONTH. FOR YEARS! My average order was like $200! And I NEVER had it shipped to my billing address. NEVER!

If a company wants information and you don't want to give it, find another company to use. Namecheap and hostgator aren't the only two companies that provide the services you want.
A far as my question, I think you realize now that it was legitimate with a reason behind it.
As far as my status, its the same as you and everyone else here.
Everyone that has posted in this thread would have helped you the best they could have.

I am not sure what you consider "identity theft".
There is a major difference between identity theft and verifying someone's identity.
But if what companies are allowed to do nowadays bothers you, then you need to be contacting your legislative representatives and letting them know you want things changed.

For instance, your social security number was never intended to be an identifier of your identity. Yet the government not only allows businesses to get the number but they are the worse offender if its abuse.

This is where it depends on how you look at it. While I would consider it a somewhat frustrating additional step, I would see it as the company going out of their way to be certain my identity hadn't already been stolen. I actually applaud them for the extra effort.

Now, if you aren't comfortable giving the additional information to the company, you probably aren't dealing with the right company. There are numerous companies I wouldn't give certain information to and there are others that have my undivided trust. You just have to define your line and stick to it.
