I was thinking of putting up a classic rock blog the other day and did a search for a domain name I liked. The dot com was taken, but the dot net was available.
I figured I'd come back in a day or two and get it.
Well, seems there is a movie or musical coming out that has the name I wanted in it.I went back to get the dot net domain and it has been taken now.

      Huh?
I love to fish. Always have.
But, I've never heard of a "merlin", and I've never "Swung away" except with a baseball bat.

That sucks :-/ if you'd grabbed the domain, them producers might have been willing to pay a good buck for it!

Yep - the owner of the .com might have had a fit about cyber-squatting or trademark violation, too, if he used it. If the .com is tradmarked, the .net isn't a safe buy.

Well I regsitered a domain a few days ago which should have cost me £5 but ended up mistakenly buying another 5 on the upsell page resulting in a £30 lesson...

    Hey Kim,

    I've had a similar experience.
I've since learned to jump on it.
I have had good success using the domain I wanted with dashes,
    or other close variations.

A friend of mine is a copyright lawyer.
Several years ago a company came to him to search a domain name they wanted.
He found that the name was already taken by a guy running a small internet business.
They told my friend to go as high as $250,000 but to low ball the guy first.
He offered the guy something like $10,000 or $15,000 and the guy turned it down.
After several bargaining sessions the guy sold the domain for $25,000.
He walked away a happy man, never knowing what could have been.

Bill Gates bought an operating system (DOS) from a programmer for $10,000. The programmer was probably pretty happy with the price he got for the program himself.

We all know what happened after that.
