In of all places the Napa Opera House. Johnny was awesome. He looks a bit frail these days and plays mostly sitting down, but man, can he still play the blues! Good old hard rocking blues. Here's a song he played tonight that he did earlier this year on Letterman:

Johnny Winter is my second favorite musician of all time. Other than Jeff Beck, I have spent more time listening to Johnny than anyone else. He's #1 on my list of people I'd like to see in concert.

He was very sick a few years ago...But seems to have recovered enough to at least play some concerts. And he's still the "meanest" slide player of all time.

I still think JW should have been given the part of the "Devil's Guitar Player" in the movie "Crossroads" instead of Stevie Vai.

Go see him if he is anywhere near you this year Kurt. It's worth a long drive or flight just to see him if he is one of your favorites. He's playing and singing damn good considering his physical limitations these days.

And Johnny's the best "slow blues" guitar player ever:

The way I "discovered" Johnny Winter was decades ago when I bought a box of about 30 albums at a garage sale. One of the albums was his self-titled album shown in the video below. I've been a huge fan ever since.

That was a great box of albums I bought. It also had an old Muddy Waters album and a few other great bluesmen, and I got the whole box for $5. One of the best buys I've ever made.

Anyway, Johnny has too many good songs to pick a favorite, but I think one of his most underappreciated songs is from that first album. I fell in love with the guitar in this song...

Yeah...It's a great song and Johnny's also so very skilled at playing the National Steel guitar.

Here's another favorite of mine with JW playing the National Steel...I love how he uses the "John Lee Hooker" foot tap.

"They say your enemies can't hurt you if you keep track of your friends.
I say you better watch your woman, that's the one who'll do you in."

Let's do one more before I have to get back to work...

If you like modern slow blues electric guitar, it just doesn't get any better than this...Johnny's all over the guitar neck and never repeats himself during his solo and the blue notes just flow from him...

Even though it's called the Napa Opera House it is a small venue also. I looked online and the capacity is 450. I had a third row seat.

I'm not sure what physical aliments Johnny has but he walks like someone much older with little shuffling steps while bent over and needs help getting around. His playing is such a contrast to his appearance it is kind of startling in a way.

      Which one
I used to hang at an ABC on Waters Ave. in Tampa back in the 70's.
But my real home was the Collage. Believe it or not that's where the Outlaws (band) practiced before they became famous and the Outlaws (mc) hung out.

That was a long time ago, and I may have been just a little inebriated.

I believe it was the one right off of 60, and ended up watching the sunrise with Budweiser in hand on Clearwater Beach.
Tampa was mucho different back then. No gangs and tons of drunken college boys like myself.

Was Mark Twains off of Dale Mabry open when you were living there?

That was my Club of choice.

I don't remember a Mark Twains, but I could of missed it.
I left Tampa around 78 (I think). When I went back in 85 to visit I didn't recognize the place. In the 70's there was an ABC about every three blocks in West Tampa. If I remember right a couple of them also had a drive-thru window, or else that was a different liqueur store. Living in Tampa in the 70's actually turned me into a drunk. I had to move back to NY just to sober up.

Here's JW on one of the greatest rock and roll classics of all time...While the song is "by" Rick Derringer, Derringer wrote it for Johnny. And, it's Johnny singing and playing the lead guitar:

"If you haven't seen him, do so. I don't think he will be with us much longer."

Good advice. You never know, he may be around for many years more, but if anyone is a fan, go see him now. He's still playing at a high level.
