Don't know why they are trying to spear them, there better off using a net.

Asian carp are an environmental disaster.

I agree Kurt. I lived in Peoria for a while a few decades ago, and it was great fishing there. Not at all now. It's over-run with this pest.

Carp are edible, though there is a muddy taste to the flesh....such a waste of fishing time if they are not used this way.

This is the Asian Carp - which is different from the normal carp you'd find in the United States. They are not bottom feeders like our carp are. They are actually a delicacy in many European and Asian cultures.

There is a movement going on right now to rename or re"brand" the fish to "silverfin" instead of carp. Because a majority of fish eaters do not like the taste of the traditional carp. This could help in reducing the problem of overpopulated rivers, because more people would eat them.

edit: and w/ the way the economy is going right now, it could be a great source for food.

They have over-taken native species that were much better for food.

They were accidently released when the Mississippi River flooded into a fishery that were breeding the carp and were never intended to be let loose into the environment.

The carp have taken over the entire Mississippi and are threatening to enter the Great Lakes, which would devastate commercial fishing there. There's something like a single lock/damn keeping the carp out of the Great Lakes.

I think a catcher's mitt would be more appropriate to catch these fish with instead of a bow and arrow.

The weird thing, they are primary food source in China and China is in a shortage crisis.
But, it's too expensive for us to ship them there.

And Kurt, the last report I saw about a week or two ago said that they found Asian Carp DNA in that final lock to the Great Lakes!

Years ago Zebra Mussels devastated the ecosystem of the lake and nearly wiped out the Wallye and the Lake Erie fishing industry.
It took several years for the lake to recover after the problem was under control.
If the Asian Carp are not stopped there will, most likely as not, not be a solution.

Similar problems here in the UK with this foreign species, the American Signal Crayfish which has been 'invading' UK freshwater streams now for several years destroying whole ecosystems.

You can read more about it here...
