Jerry O'Connell to Play Herman Munster - Yahoo! TV

Does NBC have a hit on their hands?

...Or get hit in the head?

It's not the actor that I see tanking the show. They are making it a drama and I'm not sure if people can get their heads around Herman Munster as a drama. I can't.

      I agree Sal.
I was willing to accept Dark Shadows as a comedy but The Munsters as a drama? What would be their motivation?

On the other side most of the people who watched and loved the Munsters gave up on network TV a long time ago. So the target demographic will be drama addicted 16-25 year olds. It may work.

  • Actually...when I read Eddie Izzard was going to play 'Grandpa', I thought that might be funny for a bit...but I wonder what NBC has been smoking...

They never thought all those shows in the 60's would work either...

But dare I say it? (facetiously) the "audience" is more 'sophisticated' now...

Maybe they should have gotten John Cleese to play Herman...and do "Munster Towers"

Cleese isn't tall enough to play Herman. Fred Gwynne was a big boy even without the shoes. ("Car 54, where art thou?")

Depp as Barnabus Collins is cool. That one should be funny. But casting John Cleese as Herman Munster ranks right up there with the idea of casting Shaquira as Bullwinkle J. Moose.

And Eddie Izzard in place of Al Lewis?

      Bleccch.

I think Gwynne was 6'6" in real life...

IMO, Ben Stiller would be a good Herman Munster, if he wasn't so short.

It's hard to come up with an actor that's both as good as Gwynne and as tall.

          Michael Richards, aka Cosmo Kramer.

I'd pay to see that movie.

I actually thought of Michael Richards, but think Stiller would be better. Both Gywnne and Stiller have more "sensitivity" than Richards and Herman was a very sensitive character... LOL

Even Richards isn't tall enough for Herman...I think Richards is 6'3".

Richard Moll or Brad Garrett are tall enough and may be able to pull it off...I'd probably put Garrett at the top of the list...With Jack Nicholson as Grandpa.

Doh! I don't know how I could have overlooked Garrett - he actually does a pretty darn good Herman Munster/Gwynne impersonation...

Car 54 was a scream and actually a much funnier show. I don't recall which one
lasted longer (I think Munsters was 2 or 3 seasons and Car 54 about the same)
but yeah, 54 was a riot.

Okay. Here's one for you and Kurt...

What is the main claim to fame of 2 of the actors in the show that started with this lyric?

        "It's about time
        It's about space
About 3 men in the strangest place.

I watched "It's About Time" but it was so long ago and having been on for only
one season, I don't remember much about it. Oddly, I do remember Mr Terrific
and Captain Nice and they were also only on for a season. I guess I was more
into super heroes back then with the Batman crazy.

When "It's About Time" was on, I didn't even know who Sid and Imagine were.

But when I saw him in "It's A Mad Mad World" I thought he was hysterical.
That's when my mom told me about "Your Show Of Shows" and we watched
one of them when they reshowed it one night on a special and I remember
the little guy (don't remember his name but he was also very funny) hanging
onto Sid's leg as he dragged him across the stage.

One of the funniest scenes in TV history.

A lot of my childhood blurs these days but some stuff I still remember.

It's About Time? Not so much.

** EDIT ** It was Howard Morris

We had different parental choices in TV, to be sure.

One is forced to wonder if Stephen King didn't steal the concept of Cujo from the 'deadly' St Bernard from the ghost on "Topper."

Two bonus points to anyone who can remember Topper's first name without Googling it...

Or the name of the woman who played the voice of the car on "My Mother the Car," and the main star of the show...
