Herb Reed, last of the original Platters, dies at 83

Herb Reed, the last surviving member of the Platters, one of the first pop groups to break the color barrier in the 1950s with crossover hits like "Only You," "The Great Pretender" and a soaring street-corner version of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," died on Monday in Boston. He was 83.
RIP Herb

I have all their tunes in my Itunes 50's playlist and Smoke is one of my top 25 most played songs.

    What a voice!

    RIP.

Thanks for the film clips Terry; It brought back such good memories. We used to stand on
the street corners singing their songs when I was a kid. "Oldies but Goodies" was a special
    time.

You know, I wasn't a big fan of 50s music. But "The Great Pretender" was and
still is one of my favorite songs of all time. I just listened to it now and it was
just like the first time I ever heard it.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, however, IS my favorite Platters tune of all time.
To this day, that ending still gives me chills.

He was truly one of a kind.

RIP Herb. Whether you know it or not, you done good.

I was channel surfing late a few nights ago and Rock Around The Clock with Bill Haley and The Comets was on one of the stations. I started watching it ( I had found it in the first few minutes of the movie) and as the movie showed Haley getting more and more popular, they showed them doing more and more concerts.Every concert scene in the movie had The Platters opening for Bill Haley and his band. What a great time that was and what great music from The Platters.
