What Makes America Great?

For me, some of the things that make America great are:
1. Democracy (using the bedrock of democracy: publicly hand-counted paper ballots)
2. US Constitution (eg freedom of beliefs, right to assemble, freedom of speech)
3. Movies
4. Inventions and scientific innovations.
5. Entrepreneurial spirit.
6. Literature.
7. The arts.

American people are very cool! At least the ones I know. They don't have any bias (except for maybe religion and politics) against anyone unlike some people I've known from other countries and my own. Capitalism and innovation has contributed much to making America the most powerful nation too, I believe.

Also, if it weren't for American culture seeping into ours, girls would be wearing too much clothing. So, I thank you for that America.

    Definitely the people.

The Jeep broke down yesterday and when two guys saw me trying to push it, they dropped everything they were doing to help me.

I took a tire in to get repaired, they took it off the car, checked it out, fixed it and said, "no charge."

A lost dog is one of my greatest weaknesses. Thanks to my hubby for letting me bring the mutts home so I can find their mom and dad.

I shop local to help the businesses in my area. Although Ace Hardware is more expensive than Home Crapo, I will shop at Ace.

When someone in our community needs help with medical bills due to a serious illness, car crash, etc., the amount of support they receive is heartwarming.

When a couple living on a cul-de-sac struggled financially, husband lost his job, wife working two jobs, still can't make ends meet, they lost their home through foreclosure. Their neighbors suggested they move in with them until the struggling family got back on their feet.

A local business was going under somewhere back East (can't remember where) and the locals turned out by the dozens to spend their money in that store to help keep it open.

It's no doubt it's the people that make America great.

Well, Mike - you have a lot of guys nodding their heads on that one. I drive a meat wagon, though (Jeep). One nice thing about seeing things in a jeep is that you can just jump in back and sleep - dry, never wake up with a snake curled up next to you or a coyote or bear's wet nose on your feet.

Whatever way you choose --- see everything.

Perhaps you will remember the bailout in 2008? A VAST majority of Americans opposed it. They just didn't not want it -- they wrote, called, petitioned against to make the largest statement against a gov action ever made in this country. Yet they said "up yours" and stole our money from us anyway -- and, as we have found out later, completely LIED about what they did. Does that sound like democracy in action to you? We tried to impeach Bush -- we had major huge petitions (millions of names) sent in - did we get an impeachment hearing? Nope. We were told tough noogies (a lot of our "leaders" would have landed in jail so they just denied the hearing). Democracy in action? How many Americans even know that there is an impeachment investigation going on against our current President? Hmmm - why isn't the media talking about it? Oh - that's right. We have a corporate media. Free presses are only found in democracies. We have the TSA, Vans equipped with the same machines running the streets - cameras everywhere, drones soon to fly our skies (30,000) of them, and a militia police force.

As it stands we are in a half and half situation right now. We still have some of our original constitutional rights, but most are gone. If they are able to take out our 2nd amendment like they are trying to do, you will see exactly how "sarcastic" Ken's comments are.

So, we've hit another big bump in the road much like the war of 1812, the civil war, the great depression and now 80 years later the great recession and even though we've bounced back stronger than ever before from those setbacks, and it's still early in the recovery process from this great recession...

      - You're like the boxing corner man who throws in the towel after his fighter takes a couple good shots - but he's still not down and out.

      - You're like the baseball manager who won't even allow his team to take their final at bat and you're only down by a couple of runs.

      - You're like the basketball coach that clears the bench when your team is down by 10 points with 10 minutes to go in the game.

I guess when the going gets tough the tough get going.

        Bleh.

The "crash" has nothing to do with it. It was entirely predictable that our government would rob us to pay for it. They have been doing it since the Civil War and will continue to do so because people are too lazy to garner any understanding whatsoever of what our good ol' government actually is.

No, it has to do with people being blissfully ignorant about our country and lacking the necessary acumen to be citizens.

I no longer care to talk to them. Let them sleep. I have better things to do. Self-government is a failure because people are too lazy and incompetent to govern themselves.

Why waste my energy on someone who likens massive fraud and currency manipulation to getting knocked down in a prize fight?

I used to have hope for my country but posts like yours make me understand that is a waste of time.

        So how 'bout them Cubs?

        Thanks for making me laugh.

Ken, I want you to understand that what I have said is not personal as I would say the same to anyone with your mindset.

In reality I did not liken what has happened to the nation to getting knocked down in a prizefight.

I was talking about IMHO, your complete lack of perspective and the fact that you have completely misread the situation when I used those sports metaphors.

        BTW...

        - It's 4th and 28 with two minutes to go, you're down by a touchdown but you've decided to have your QB fall on the ball.

        - You're playing golf and the best club for the next shot would be a 9 iron but you're going to use a putter instead.

        anyways...

Just because folks don't want the "action option" you'd probably endorse and prefer

( doing nothing and/or I wouldn't be surprised if it was the "milly" option ) ...

...that's no good reason to dog out the population.

Not many people feel the way you do so therefore in your book that makes them idiots.

        Sure...

I'm not overjoyed with the American people's (voters) reaction to the crisis but as far as I'm concerned it's a way to early in the recovery process to throw them and the nation under the bus.

        Yoda said....

Anger leads to frustration which leads to cloudy prospectives and decisions which lead to the dark side.

I shudder to think of George Washington (after being equipped with your mindset) ...

...would have done in the winter of 1776, when we were down to a only a couple thousand troops vs. the overwhelming might of the British Empire.

It was near Xmas time and many of the troops would be free to go home at the end of the year.

The situation looked very bleak to say the least.

        But...

Instead of packing it in, on Xmas morn we struck the party animals, the Hessions at Trenton and gained a great victory and saved the revolution.

        But alas...

None of us reading this would have been born cause ( with your attitudes ) George Washington would have simply packed it in...

...and the American experience would have never happened in the first place.

        All The Best!!

TL - you sound more like a paid disinformation specialist every time I read your political opinions.

When people sit back and allow themselves to be stolen from and treated like slaves, it is time to act - and when they refuse to take off the rose colored glasses and see that they NEED to act or we are done as a democratic republic, then they ARE idiots -- unless they want to live in a fascist society. Actually, most people ignore everything until that fascism hits their own home, then they cry about it and have no clue why what just happened did. Sorry - that is idiocy.

Example? People get absolutely abused by TSA agents every day - and they cry real loud when it happens -- but they aren't refusing to fly until the gestapo tactics are removed and some sensible security measures applied instead. They just keep going through that toxic radiation and letting some $10 an hour pervert that signed on specifically to abuse people grope their genitals or drug test little kids.

It was the same way in the early 70's when drug tests for jobs was first started. It was all about finding drugs so people thought that was a good thing. Now we have them setting up cameras and stealing DNA and doing searches without warrants or probable cause. We let them start a "war on terrorists" and they are listing even peaceful protesters as terrorists.

When it goes too far it goes too far. And it has. Rose colored glasses are not positive thinking. They are refusing to face reality. You can not take POSITIVE action when you refuse to face reality. It takes facing it to find the answers to solve the problem.

And, I'm certain the average citizen in the middle east is VERY content.
And, China has to be #1 with smog so thick you can't see 1/2 a mile and the government tells you how many children you can have.
Explain to me why America sucks.
You can't see in China because they didn't start telling people how many babies they could have about a half a billion people earlier.

And that's another reason the US is still a little bit great. People started to slow down on having so many kids that we can't see through our air either except in a very few locations.

I'm constantly in awe of the fact that the men who formed this country happen to come together in the same place, at the same time.

There have been just enough "right-minded" people in power to prevent a total break-down of the philosophies this country was founded on.

Our, ("We, the people") job now is to take serious action and see that more people in power are commited to the principles set forth in that constitution.

That's not enough - too many of our rights have been suppressed. We absolutely have to start kicking reps out of office - recall, etc. right as soon as they do something unconstitutional. Not vote them out -- we have to start kicking their asses to the curb. If people won't get their fingers out of their noses and do that, there's not one damned thing we are going to do about being sequestered.

The diversity - you can meet so many different people from so many different places with so many different stories. I'll never understand the people who want to keep everyone else out of the country if that's one of the reasons that makes the country great, not to mention that it's how the country came to be in the first place.

I love America because its a place where if you really, truly want something you can go out and get it. If your tired of your minimum wage job your not stuck there if you truly want to escape that. We have a host of issues yes, but if you want to go out and do something with your life you can--regardless of race or beliefs.

If you have the work-ethic to survive--the "American Dream" is still very real. I truly love this place that I live and the opportunities it has afforded me... and I am not what you would even consider "middle class."

This comes to mind when I think of what makes America great:

    1. Only in America......can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

    2. Only in America......are there handicap parking places in front of our skating rinks.

    3. Only in America......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions, while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

    4. Only in America......do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a Diet Coke.

    5. Only in America......do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

    6. Only in America......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

    7. Only in America......do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

    8. Only in America......do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

    9. Only in America......do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

You have no say in how the state educates your children. You may be stopped on the road any time by armed representatives of the state who can demand your body fluids for the purpose of incriminating you. If you refuse, you will be locked in a cage and your property impounded. If you resist being locked in the cage, you will be killed.

    Wrong on all counts.

If you do not pay the state for the privilege of driving on roads you paid for or living on the property you own, you will be locked in a cage. If you resist being locked in a cage, you will be killed for your efforts.

    The roads need to maintained.
property taxes help pay for the free education we get,
No one has ever been killed for not paying their taxes

The state may come in and take your children from you based on the evaluation of the state. If you resist, you will be locked in a cage or killed.

There are many, many more children kept in homes where they should not be than there are children taken from homes where they belong.

No one has ever been killed for not letting the State take their children.

The state allows private banks to decide on the value of your money. The money you have will lose value as long as you have it.

And this is different from the rest of the world how?
The state may kill you whenever it pleases if it determines you are an enemy of the state.

I guarantee you, it happens less in the U.S. than any other country.

Other than that, things are just fine.
I believe there are many countries that would lock you in a cage or have you killed for making this post.
