A Manly Man's Weekend

Got this email from my brother last week.
He has 75 acres out in no-mans-land in Adams County in South-Central Ohio.
It has a beautiful, lodge-like log cabin on a 3 acre pond.
So, this is what I'll be doing this weekend:

Gentlemen (and Chip Hart):

Eric Middlebrook has reminded me that Friday, June 8 is opening day of Ohio's frog gigging season.
That being the case we, possibly along with various other disreputable personages, plan to be at my Adams County cabin for the big opening day weekend, where we will gig frogs, jug turtles, fish, shoot things, play the stereo too loudly, listen to Reds games on the radio, eat, drink, urinate off the front porch, play poker, and engage in other manly pursuits.
Women are welcome, but will be required to prepare the frog legs and turtles for eating, as well as doing all the cooking and cleaning and repairing the upstairs toilet, which is need of a new fill valve. (New fill valve and a pipe wrench are on the sink beside the toilet.)

Come for the weekend, or stop by as time permits. Fisticuffs discouraged.

Does it get any better?
  • Rattlesnakes...
you need some Rattlesnakes to make it 'interesting', and 'weapons for no apparent reason' :p

But don't hurt any Turtle Birds

Although there are Timber Rattlers in Eastern Ohio, any in the area where we're going would be rare. But, they would definitely make it interesting.
And, there will definitely be weapons for no apparent reason.
Including, but not limited to, Bows, (My brother is a field editor for "Bow Hunting" Magazine), Black-powder rifles, and, other rifles of various powers.

There will be no injury to baby turtles. With the possible exception of the errant
under-sized Snapping turtle that is too small to bother with eating.:p

Hey. S. Central ID? Like around Twin Falls? Good rockhound territory.

That's what I'm doing this weekend. I'm meeting with 6 members of my website for a weekend of rock hunting in E. Oregon - and eating. The host's got a cattle ranch so we are having roasted grass fed organic beef. Yum. Guess we have something to compare notes on next Monday

Anything involving getting as far away from civilization as possible is worthy endeavor.
We won't be eating organic beef, however, we will be having all organic meat: Venison, Turtle, fish, (Bluegill mostly), and Frog legs.
Will definitely compare notes on Monday.:p

Sounds like a great time. I hope you go and get to spend some time with the guys.

I see women are welcome but they have to cook and fix the toilet. I could fix the toilet in no time but there's not a chance of cooking up no frog legs or any other varmint brought in by the boys.

And since fisticuffs is discouraged, well, I'll stay home.

Yeah, a weekend at a cabin in the middle of nowhere with a fifth a good whiskey isn't quite the same without some fisticuffs.
But, we were simply too busy with all the other stuff for somebody to take swing at somebody.

Just got back from Rick's cabin.

GREAT weekend! We missed out on the frog giging, (SOMEONE forgot to bring a gig!), and the turtles.

We did , however, catch a few Largemouths and some bluegill.
And,we did have venison and Rick prepared 2 pheasants.

Eric brought his 22 mag rifle with a 'sniper' scope, a 22 mag pistol, and a 9mm pistol.

Yesterday, 2 of Rick's buddies showed up with there new weapons. Mike had a nice little 28 gauge over-under with a beautiful walnut stock. Can't remember the damn make, but it was sweet!
Rick had a new Charles Daly 12 gauge and John had 20 gauge. We shot a bunch of clay pidgeons out over the pond.

All-in all, a good time was had by all. Shooting, fishing, great music, drinking, laughing, and of course, pissing off the porch.

Can't wait to do it again!

    P.S.
    The toilet never got fixed.

We had an awesome time, too. There were more people than figured. We had around 15. The food was extraordinary - and we got agates, jasper, and petrified wood during the day. The only thing that put any damper on it was the weather -- it was just stinking cold. I passed a lot of snow on the way there - it laid down quite a bit over the night for about an 80 mile stretch. The wind was relentless and the overnight temp was around 28. In June. That part sucked real hard. But - there was a rock saw in the garage and everyone brought great stuff to trade and as gifts. One of my members made me a heart shaped agate pendant. I was impressed (and delighted) - he has only started cutting stone since being a member of my forum.

The stories and comradarie around the campfire belied the fact it was the first time most of us had met face to face. It felt very much like a reunion of old time friends.

I just got back a little bit ago and am just exhausted.

Yeah, at the end of the day, when all is said and done, it all comes down to the comraderie.
