Remember the days when you'd tip the bottle and the ketchup took forever to
come out?

I have this bottle now where the stuff runs out it's so watery.

So I gotta ask...what the hell has happened to Heinz Ketchup?

    Lol, ketchup.
  • It's a ketchup conspiracy, and I think John Kerry is definitely involved...

  • They have begun using LiquiGlide. Its a coating applied to the inside of glass and plastic bottles. The super slippery, non-toxic coating prevents condiments such as mayo, ketchup and peanut butter from sticking to the sides of their containers.

    • Jody has answered part of your question rather brilliantly! Excellent Jody!

But I have to ask Steve, regarding the watery part...did you shake it first?

    • Whatever you do, don't confuse this with Astro Glide.

  • Steven, maybe this will help demonstrate it for you.

  • The economy has ruined the tomato quality of our nation. =(
  • Jody, Sal beat me to it, but I wouldn't trust the FDA for anything. They have been proven to be corrupt. Thanks for the info though.

    • While I don't disagree with the corrupt part, the fact of the matter the FDA approves MANY things for "human consumption" that would make you cringe...

Such as rat fur and feces (up to a certain amount)

The fact of the matter is we can't avoid a lot of the substances that get approved, so they approve AMOUNTS of questionable items.

Being in the pharmaceutical industry for 22 years I see a lot of this kind of thing. In the manufacturing process of foods and drugs, things get in to the mix. For example, we use "food grade" grease and oils on the processing equipment. We don't add it to the product, but it is on the equipment and could (and routinely does) get in the mix.

It's easy to simply call them all corrupt, but much of this we can't avoid - unless you want to grow all your own food and make your own drugs, you take the bad with the good

  • is it just me?,

but when that ketchup slides out, it looks disgusting ...
  • Sal,

Please don't interpret my responses as endorsing this. I was simply answering the OP and follow-up questions.

    • It reminds me of an old expression I heard people say in my youth...

...slicker than snot on a doorknob.

I know you replied to Sal but I posted a similar comment, just so you know, I didn't take it as an endorsement.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • No I know better than that. The comment was for all the uninformed that say "oh, okay" and continue to eat poisonous crap - or spray roundup on their veggies.

  • Someone posted that video to me on facebook a couple of weeks ago, and I thought then that it was a really bad idea. I get that this new material is really neat, but there has to be some better use for it than a catchup bottle. There are some companies - (and I could have sworn that Heinz was one of them) - that use the thickness of their catchup in many marketing campaigns. And while making the catchup come out faster may not effect the taste, it does look disgusting.

What would be a better use of this material?
  • BYE ketchup of my youth! We should SUE them for false advertising! Anyone remember THIS world famous ad campaign?

  • BTW, I read the liquiglide FAQ. It is NOTHING of the sort. NONE of my questions were answered!

Non toxic generally means doesn't kill when under a certain amount is used. FDA approved means, LEGALLY AND OFFICIALLY, that the FDA has declared it to be reasonably safe.

The FDA has like 3 levels of "approval".

    1. Drugs SHOULD mean that the rewards generally outweigh the risks. So a HIGHLY toxic compound can be FDA approved if it has a chance at saving people that will die ANYWAY.
    2. Foods SHOULD mean it is GRAS(generally recognized as safe), or considered to be relatively harmless. Even products known to trigger allergies, destroy kidneys, and cause violent(let's say bathroom visits) have gotten this.
    3. SUPPLEMENT SHOULD mean NOTHING! Out of jurisdiction.....

    • Yep - that's what it's SUPPOSED to mean. Unfortunately - the companies are allowed to submit their OWN research on their OWN products and much does not get verified and some is even allowed to be sold to accumulate the research. Look at pharmaceuticals and the list of side effects. You want to stop a headache? Some of what's out there is the leading cause of kidney and liver faillure......to cure a headache? Sorry - FDA is purely a financial institution. You get approved if you have the money to get approved or if your product doesn't deter people from using the lethal products of a company with the money to stop you.

  • The problem, Steven my friend, is that, apparently, you have yet to discover Brooks "Rich and Tangy" Ketchup.
If you had, this thread would not exist.

    • Sounds like a regional brand, never heard of it.
I also have never heard of Dukes Mayonaise either till I moved to Richmond.

    • I once went to a customer that told me THEY used to be the leader in ketchup. I thnk they said that TO THIS DAY they use more tomatos than anyone else. And I DO get a lot of tomatos from them every year. Several popular drinks, and I used to have ther soup. MMMM MMM GOOD! And YEAH, I watched lassie. My mother even went to a seamstress that had weatherwax as a customer!

Alas, something happened and HEINZ became the ketchup leader! NOW, as to my little seemingly off topic Monologue? Well, most Americans probably pieced it together at least somewhat. I spoke at a company get together with some old hands that told me CAMPBELLS was once the leader. They are mostly known for soup and, in those days, such companies sponsored whole programs. They sponsored the lassies series and advertised their soup saying it was "mmm mmm good". Many may not realize, but they have several subsidiaries. One is V8, which uses a LOT of tomatos. BTW Lassies trainer was rudd weatherwax, brother to his owner. Yeah, lassie(an irish term for GIRL) was MALE

Oh well. Sorry I didn't try YOUR ketchup.

      Steve!

Well, funny you should ask ...

He had a few of his posts deleted, through no fault of his own (you know how it is - he just happened to have posted in some threads which the moderators decided, in their wisdom, we could all probably survive without), but unfortunately he took it all a bit personally, wouldn't listen to the voice of reason, and kept starting off those unpleasant threads with titles like "Why Are My Damn Posts Disappearing", and then eventually, when it was patiently explained to him that it was nothing to do with his posts per se and that he shouldn't be starting off new threads to ask about it, he started developing paranoid delusions (just because nobody was actually out to get him doesn't mean that he wasn't paranoid, right?) and gradually became convinced, against all the odds, that there was a conspiracy here against people with apparently Germanic-sounding first names, and after that, well, you get the idea - one thing led to another and it just seemed right for him to have some vacation time. Besides which, he was getting pretty overcolored and frankly somewhat watery, too ...

    • Alexa, have you been snorting ketchup again?

I guess interventions don't always work...

      Sad day.

      Sad, sad day...
  • i only use tomato sauce so outside my area of expertise
  • It is probably the new way of doing business. "Get less for more"
  • It's possible they changed the formula so that the squirty bottles would do exactly that. The original sauce might have been too thick.

They might have then used the same formula for both squirty and glass bottles.

I never did like the glass bottles. It only ever resulted in a sauce overdose and wastage though the ritual of smacking the bottom of the bottle was fun I guess.

    • I buy the 32 oz Heinz in the plastic bottle that stores in the fridge upside down. No problem getting it out, not runny, and it doesn't seem to "slide" off the inside of the bottle so that one may not be coated.

And, yes, shake it as it does separate a bit on standing.
