What Has Happened To Heinz Ketchup?

Remember the days when you'd tip the bottle and the ketchup took forever to
come out?

I have this bottle now where the stuff runs out it's so watery.

So I gotta ask...what the hell has happened to Heinz Ketchup?

Not sure just how safe it is Dennis. They claim ingredients used are FDA Approved Materials.

Nope! The coating is made entirely from food materials; no nanoparticles to worry about. Even if you scraped off the coating with a knife and ate it, it would be completely harmless and flavorless.
        Source: LiquiGlide » FAQs

"One of the most significant challenges his team faced was making sure the coating was food safe, meaning his team could only work with materials the FDA had approved. "We had a limited amount of materials to pick from," Smith says. "I can't say what they are, but we've patented the hell out of it."

That doesn't mean anything. FDA approved just means the company has enough bucks to buy an approval.

Steve - better check that ketchup label out a tad. It's probably made with some GMO ingredients, too. That was the first major thing that happened to ketchup, and part of the reason it just doesn't taste the same anymore.

While I don't disagree with the corrupt part, the fact of the matter the FDA approves MANY things for "human consumption" that would make you cringe...

Such as rat fur and feces (up to a certain amount)

The fact of the matter is we can't avoid a lot of the substances that get approved, so they approve AMOUNTS of questionable items.

Being in the pharmaceutical industry for 22 years I see a lot of this kind of thing. In the manufacturing process of foods and drugs, things get in to the mix. For example, we use "food grade" grease and oils on the processing equipment. We don't add it to the product, but it is on the equipment and could (and routinely does) get in the mix.

It's easy to simply call them all corrupt, but much of this we can't avoid - unless you want to grow all your own food and make your own drugs, you take the bad with the good

Yeah Mike, I'm aware of that. The kind of corruption I'm referring to is this: FDA "Corruption" Letter Authenticated: Lawyers, Start Your Engines! - CBS News

Just about anything can be approved if you have enough money, and useful things can be denied if those who stand to lose profits have the money to thwart the developers efforts to get approval.

Yes sir ... understood. I'm one of those crazy people who think when serious corruption is exposed, heads should roll. In the case of our government, that means loss of job and loss of pension, and jail and fines as appropriate.

Well, I got the answer from my wife. Actually, this is something that should be
              known to everybody.

It started with the all natural craze. Early Heinz had fillers and stuff in it to
make it thick. But then when a lot of foods started going all natural, they
changed their formula, or lack thereof. So that's why the Ketchup isn't as thick
              as it used to be.

Come to think of it, Heinz used to make me sick sometimes. Now it doesn't
              anymore.

              Anyway, that's the scoop.

I've noticed several times when a product I remember as being "really good" just isn't as good when you buy it today...it could be removing bad stuff wasn't limited to ketchup. More proof that if it tastes really great....it's probably bad for you.

Actually, I don't remember ANYTHING bad in ketchup. And a LOT of the time they ADD bad stuff, or make things WORSE! An example?

I keep being offered "salt" at a local restaurant. I would LOVE salt! I WANTED salt! But I do NOT accept THEIRS! WHY? Two reasons. one, not all of the "salt" is salt! TWO, it has anticaking components, etc... that contain ALUMINUM! *****NO THANKS*****! Salt used to be salt, with the main added ingredient being iodine.

Or how abut when I was a LITTLE kid, and peanut butter separated! It doesn't generally NOW! WHY? USUALLY because the oils are hydrogenated. It makes them almost like cool butter, even well above room temperature. ALSO, it can keep longer after being opened even though they remved the vitamin E that would otherwise do that.

Oh I could keep going. MOST stuff when I was a kid was SAFER than now.

BTW Some people feel bad after taking PURE tomatos, so that doesn't mean much.

Someone posted that video to me on facebook a couple of weeks ago, and I thought then that it was a really bad idea. I get that this new material is really neat, but there has to be some better use for it than a catchup bottle. There are some companies - (and I could have sworn that Heinz was one of them) - that use the thickness of their catchup in many marketing campaigns. And while making the catchup come out faster may not effect the taste, it does look disgusting.

What would be a better use of this material?

BTW, I read the liquiglide FAQ. It is NOTHING of the sort. NONE of my questions were answered!

Non toxic generally means doesn't kill when under a certain amount is used. FDA approved means, LEGALLY AND OFFICIALLY, that the FDA has declared it to be reasonably safe.

The FDA has like 3 levels of "approval".

    1. Drugs SHOULD mean that the rewards generally outweigh the risks. So a HIGHLY toxic compound can be FDA approved if it has a chance at saving people that will die ANYWAY.
    2. Foods SHOULD mean it is GRAS(generally recognized as safe), or considered to be relatively harmless. Even products known to trigger allergies, destroy kidneys, and cause violent(let's say bathroom visits) have gotten this.
    3. SUPPLEMENT SHOULD mean NOTHING! Out of jurisdiction.....

Yep - that's what it's SUPPOSED to mean. Unfortunately - the companies are allowed to submit their OWN research on their OWN products and much does not get verified and some is even allowed to be sold to accumulate the research. Look at pharmaceuticals and the list of side effects. You want to stop a headache? Some of what's out there is the leading cause of kidney and liver faillure......to cure a headache? Sorry - FDA is purely a financial institution. You get approved if you have the money to get approved or if your product doesn't deter people from using the lethal products of a company with the money to stop you.

YEP. I DID list REAL examples. Some cancer treatments are KNOWN to be HIGHLY lethal. The FDA says "for terminally ill", and "approves it". Ibuprofin is KNOWN to cause liver damage, and I believe kidney also. The liver kind of protects the kidneys anyway, so something hurting the liver WILL eventually hurt the kidneys. Luckily, with most types of damage, even a 50% dead liver can recover. much past that, and you are a goner! As house says, there IS a reason why it is called a LIVEr! The liver is the ONLY organ able to do that.

Some fake fats, flavors, and sweetners can cause bathroom incidents, etc...

Part of the problem with agencies like the FDA (and others) is they are run by bureaucrats that used to be CEO's in some of the companies being regulated. Bit of a conflict there, eh?

And yes - the FDA IS a money making entity. They get annual payments from pharmaceutical companies every year. Large ones. These payments are not mandatory or even asked for. They are just paid. Makes you wonder (not).

                  Sorry 'bout that.

But, now you know why it's such an exclusive club.

I will say I live just north west of Cincinnati. So, if care to make the trip you may be allowed a sampling.

I once went to a customer that told me THEY used to be the leader in ketchup. I thnk they said that TO THIS DAY they use more tomatos than anyone else. And I DO get a lot of tomatos from them every year. Several popular drinks, and I used to have ther soup. MMMM MMM GOOD! And YEAH, I watched lassie. My mother even went to a seamstress that had weatherwax as a customer!

Alas, something happened and HEINZ became the ketchup leader! NOW, as to my little seemingly off topic Monologue? Well, most Americans probably pieced it together at least somewhat. I spoke at a company get together with some old hands that told me CAMPBELLS was once the leader. They are mostly known for soup and, in those days, such companies sponsored whole programs. They sponsored the lassies series and advertised their soup saying it was "mmm mmm good". Many may not realize, but they have several subsidiaries. One is V8, which uses a LOT of tomatos. BTW Lassies trainer was rudd weatherwax, brother to his owner. Yeah, lassie(an irish term for GIRL) was MALE

Oh well. Sorry I didn't try YOUR ketchup.

      Steve!

Well, funny you should ask ...

He had a few of his posts deleted, through no fault of his own (you know how it is - he just happened to have posted in some threads which the moderators decided, in their wisdom, we could all probably survive without), but unfortunately he took it all a bit personally, wouldn't listen to the voice of reason, and kept starting off those unpleasant threads with titles like "Why Are My Damn Posts Disappearing", and then eventually, when it was patiently explained to him that it was nothing to do with his posts per se and that he shouldn't be starting off new threads to ask about it, he started developing paranoid delusions (just because nobody was actually out to get him doesn't mean that he wasn't paranoid, right?) and gradually became convinced, against all the odds, that there was a conspiracy here against people with apparently Germanic-sounding first names, and after that, well, you get the idea - one thing led to another and it just seemed right for him to have some vacation time. Besides which, he was getting pretty overcolored and frankly somewhat watery, too ...

Alexa, have you been snorting ketchup again?

I guess interventions don't always work...

It's possible they changed the formula so that the squirty bottles would do exactly that. The original sauce might have been too thick.

They might have then used the same formula for both squirty and glass bottles.

I never did like the glass bottles. It only ever resulted in a sauce overdose and wastage though the ritual of smacking the bottom of the bottle was fun I guess.

I buy the 32 oz Heinz in the plastic bottle that stores in the fridge upside down. No problem getting it out, not runny, and it doesn't seem to "slide" off the inside of the bottle so that one may not be coated.

And, yes, shake it as it does separate a bit on standing.
