i am 7 inches tall, but of solid build and moo a lot. while i take on those 10x my size, they inevitably beat me, except in the ankle biting division. all i need now is a height advantage

Answering the author of the post. I am interested in Aikido, Just interested thought. Planning to start learning it this year. I like the philosophy behind it - use your opponent energy to win. I find this idea really curious. If I could adopt this kind of technique to most of my life actions, I would be one wise happy person.

I've had training - but am not actually "into" it. I just wanted to be able to defend myself. The only movies I really watch are those with Mark Dacoscos because I know his father and uncle and have met him before. I've watched a few others but they are not on my "must see" list generally. As far as exercise, I use a mix of that and dance, stretches, and just being out in the fresh air at mountains, streams, etc.

I do know people that eat sleep and dream the stuff though. When it's a passion, it's addictive no matter what it is.

Silat, after watching that Film "the Raid" I've been tempted to learn it. I've got a Taekwondo background. After looking into a bit of Silat its a very fluid form of movement where you can turn every move into a attack / defence and use every part of your body to attack / defend.

  • I've taken some martial arts and boxing. It's really eye-opening when you learn how to properly defend and fight. Because many people punch with big, wide haymakers which is a recipe for disaster. It's good to learn how to use efficient technique. Plus, I think all kids should take some boxing or martial arts. Even the basics will help them in this day and age.

I've been very interested in martial arts since 1972. I have a brown belt in a hapkido based martial art that blends in 7 other arts. My son is a black belt in taekwondo and yellow belt in combat j.j.

I had a martial arts blog for five years but recently let it go because I am too busy with my other sites/blogs. I see a lot of jokers in this thread...so here is my two cents. If you meet me in person, you would notice I have verbal diarrhea in regards to the martial arts and mma. I love everything about it, the movies, the stars and frequently pick up books and tapes to watch at home.

I did hotel security for 15 years and took a lot of P.P.C.T. courses and frequently have some young dudes come out to my house for lessons. Two of them have gone on to BJJ and done very well.

Okay, so you can tell, I blab a lot, must be the writer in me.

I completely agree. Most people automatically turn to the big haymaker, which makes for an easy counter.

What I also think is interesting is most people don't realize just how good these guys are. Some people think that the people fighting don't look that great, but the truth is that they're fighting with other people on the same level as them who can negate their movements. But the moment you put the pro with the joe, it becomes instantly apparent just how big that skill difference is.

You could ask your martial arts teacher about those, odds are (s)he had to go through the same thing. Another good thing to do if you want to do a seminar is to do it at a martial arts convention, talk to the chairman and if they like what your ideas, they'll add you to the program.

Yes. I love the arts. I began in Korean styles as a youth. As an adult, I studied Kun Tao for several years, various Kenpo arts, and now focus on qigong, tai chi, xing i chuan, yichuan, and bagua. I also dabble in some silat (forms only) and cimande (light study). I prefer the internal arts these days. Qigong (and some monastic neigong) have taught me more about defense then all the rest...and I have not had a cold of flu in over a decade because of them!!
