Candlelight once a week/month

I saw a suggestion for energy conservation and "green living."

It suggested that once a week or once a month to turn out all the lights and just use candlelight.

Sit and talk as a family and visit with each other instead of using the TV and light bulbs.

I like the idea. Going to try it this week.

I heard that before. I think a news program someone said every Tuesday night they would use candles and no electricity to save some money. Hmm, sounds interesting but won't work for me. I need electricity, I can't live without it.

And if they are ONLY talking about lights-not heating/air, refrigerator, etc-then it really won't make much of a difference. Lights don't account for that much of the electric bill. It's the refrigerator, washer, dryer, dishwasher, and then heating and cooling that are the bulk of the bill. To me, it's not worth it to save 50 cents. I'll save 50 cents some other way.

During the year of the hurricanes (2004) I was without electricity for
5 days (Francis) and I think 8 or 9 days for Jeanne. I had a small generator
I ran a few hours a day to keep the fridge cool and ran a couple of lights
in the evening. Otherwise, no internet (Brighthouse was down anyway),
no TV and no phone. I read, puttered, paced and generally got a little bit
of cabin fever. I was glad there was very little damage here as Florida was
    really trashed that year.

When you hear someone telling you what YOU can't do, they are usually talking about what THEY can't do.

Electricity make things AND life much easier for over the past years now. And i do believe that if ever the world we are living suddenly turns dark and electricity won't ever function, I guess we can consider that this era will be in the "dark times".

But still, conserving energy and a healthy green living is one of necessities this past few months, with all the economic downturn that we are experiencing lately. A dollar deducted is better than an additional dollar in the monthly bills.

      Shay -

Here's something to try. Without power from a blizzard years ago we discovered you can pop popcorn over candles.

The ice storm in late Jan. was MISERABLE. Not just the not having any electricity, but it was FREEZING cold. At least if it was warmer it wouldn't have been so miserable. I have no desire to go through that again. The only places open was the police station and hospital.

Everyone was going to buy generators and kerosene lanterns. Once the stores opened again, every place that sold generators was sold out. People were driving 2-3 hours away to try to find generators. Nobody wants to go through that again.

It taught me I can't live without electricity. I'm just not the Amish type.

I didn't know you could pop popcorn over candles Cool, will have to try that sometime lol

Good to know about the popcorn!

I like the idea more for the socializing aspect than the saving aspect.

Funny I was just going to say that
I remember back in the 60's when the whole northeast lost power it was great. In fact growing up we always had oil lamps in every room because the power would constantly go out in the country here. We also spent more time on the front porch as a family in the summer then in the house at night. I kinda miss those days.

Using candles is actually very wasteful. They are petroleum-based and cause more global warming. Using electricity is far economical and cleaner.

I use ones that are from a soy/veggie wax blend.

Or we could probably join Earth Hour event.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome's Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

This is now a global event. I'm a Green Peace volunteer now, trying to save Mother Earth as much as I can.
