What Is "Indie"?

OK....

I know the kind of reading material I like.
And, the kind of music I like,
And, the kind of movies I like.

I'm pretty open-minded, as well as curious, so, my
range of entertainment venues is pretty- much wide open.

I keep seeing "Indie" **** everywhere....
books, movies, music;

But, I have no idea what "Indie" means.

I'm an old fart, and, as such, not so much stuck in my ways as
my mind is already over-loaded with **** I've been exposed to over the years and I'm not inclined to fill it with more.

But, as I stated I am the curious type.
So, out of curiosity, just what is "Indie" ****?

  • Generally speaking, it's short for "independent", which refers to not being associated with any major publishing company.
  • Independent.

So for example the Independent Film Channel (IFC) - it is movies made by people - individuals working independently and free from the constraints (and money) of the mainstream mega movie corps.

Same with all the rest - it used to be that for example IFC had no commercials and they had real 'off-beat' (creative) themes etc -

Now they have commercials AND don't know if it is coincidental they have a lot of what I call crap = Gratuitous sex and violence and nothing very 'creative' -

With music they used to refer to it as 'alternative' - that caught on and so then it became mainstream CRAP too. Formulaic crap. Nothing creative or DIFFERENT.
  • It often refers to independently produced movies (what that actually means can get quite murky).

    • Slow pokes. What took you so long?
  • AHHH....

I was under the impression it was a style, or genre.

    Thanks for clearing that up.
  • i think indie means alternative, which are genres in music, but i have no idea on what they are supposed to mean

    • I've always seen it as 'indie' vidual, think it's a bit pompous labelling something as "indie" though...
