How does a longstanding WF Member end up receiving an "infraction" for "Breaking WSO Rules" here in the OT lounge???

Somebody, please clarify - or have I totally lost it? :p

    Doesn't matter - I just reversed it.

I hate the infraction system as it comes across as a personal attack on someone even though that's not the intention.

I guess some people just like to control the conversations - I'm surprised the thread was locked. We've had some good discussions on that topic in the past....maybe that's the point as there isn't much more to say.

Kay, please enlighten me as to how this is "breaking WSO rules".

Thanks, Kay. I saw the infraction first and was a bit confused.

I was surprised it was locked, too. I thought it was an interesting article and I blatantly kept politics out of it.

I have it on good authority that it was locked on a Minority Report-esque basis. Just closing it before any possibly silliness ensued.

    All well...interesting article, though.

I think the person that gave the infraction needs 5 or 6 at once. Someone that joined wiithin the last 11 days and seems to have gone a bit power mad.

Unfortunately, locking the thread made the complainant think he can control conversations.

My point Kay, but as always, you said it better than I.

I posted my thoughts on this subject in another thread, but I think it fits here too.

No idea what thread you guys are talking about - or what infraction.

But I can tell you what probably happened with 'breaking WSO rules' -

--- it is the default -

I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten and/or how hard it is for me to remember to change it to the real reason when I am mid-tizzy firing off an infraction -

quite embarassing and probably deserves an infraction.

Thanks for this - I usually just hit the "report post" button, or send a pm to the "infractor" or contact Paul/and or another mod with details.

I'm not fond of the "infractions" process and I don't use it. I know this sentiment is felt by some other members here also.

    BTW, pm sent to you.

You know what I think when I see someone was given an infraction. I instantly wonder if it is an issue with the person who received it ... or the one who gave it.

I'd bet that runs about 50/50.

I took exception to the condescending tone of the post of the person who laid the infraction. Personally, I think an infraction registered by someone who has been a member all of a week doesn't hold much water, but still...

I apologize for dredging up an older post, but I have two questions about infractions, and can't find the answers, no matter how much I search. The funny thing is, I know I've seen the answer at least to one of these quesitons before.

First, can a person who receives an infraction reverse it him or herself?

For example, if someone gives me an infraction, can I reverse it myself or do I have to wait for it to expire or someone else to reverse it?

Second, I know that infractions can be given by forum users and not just mods or admins, but what exactly are the rules for giving infractions? Is there a specific "infraction how to" or something like it somewhere? This is what I think I've seen before, but can't find. When I first signed up, I read every rule and guide I could, and now I can't seem to remember where I saw that information.

I've never received an infraction, but I saw someone who did who reversed it on their own (unjustly, I think), which got me to thinking, and then I saw something today that I'm not sure warrants an actual report to the mods, but at least an infraction, so I am wondering about the infraction rules.

Thanks in advance for your help :-)

Infractions are pretty useless and usually used by someone trying to control others - doesn't work.

They expire on their own - I don't think you can reverse your own but doesn't really matter.

If someone is violating a rule here I just report the post or thread as "member moderator" and let the mods sort it out.

Read the sticky post on "member moderators" - much more useful than worrying about the infraction system.

        kay

Just remember the purpose is to keep the forum clean and stop rule violations - not agreeing with someone's post doesn't mean an infraction or report is in order. If in doubt, don't report it until you are familiar with the rules. If it's a violation, others will be reporting the same post so no harm done.

Thanks Kay - I usually do use the report button for clear rules violations that I am sure of. Today, though, I noticed that someone reversed their own infraction, and then I saw someone post the same thing four times in one thread, two of them back to back, and then another time in another thread.

The thing about this was that I think they were posting in the wrong threads in the first place because it was a "he scammed me, don't buy" post about software, but neither thread was selling software. In fact, neither thread was selling anything at all.

So, I started wondering about infraction usage rules. I was searching the terms "infraction," and "violations," and infraction rules," and the member moderator thread didn't come up, but I bet it was the one I was thinking about...

          Thanks again :-)

Chances are the thread was deleted by mods for being nonsense. If the person keeps it up he may be deleted for the same reason:p

People that post like that don't care about infractions anyway.
