The Burning House: What People Would Take If The House Was on Fire | Brain Pickings

Let me ask, what would you take with you?

If you want to take this to the next level, post a pic similar to the article.

Have fun with this.

Of course I'd grab my family first. But if I had time for anything else I'd grab my 2TB Hard-Drive - It has every picture and home video I've ever taken on it...

A copy of my insurance policy and a strong hope that nobody figures out it was arson.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

My wife and I have this planned. I grab the dog, my CPU, and wallet. My wife grabs the cat and photo albums and her purse.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

      Wow! You got it EZ!

You: Wallet in pocket...unplug CPU - "Cmon Barney! Let's go!"

Wife: Now...where did I leave my purse?...the photo albums are on the bookcase, (I think :confused

...and the rest of the time is spent trying to catch a cat in a house on fire! (here, kitty, kitty!...)

      Boy...You DID have this planned...:p

I live on the Oregon coast and had to evacuate when the warning sirens started up here after the tsunami in Japan.

It was hard to know what to take. We had a couple hours to prepare. As I recall I took my hard drive, some jewelry, my wallet & checkbook, my important papers, address books, my log in info for the internet and sites, my contact stuff and a few vitamins - I am a health nut, what can I say. Along with that the preparedness bags and some water.

My mom and I went to my sisters on higher ground. Everything was ok here, but not down the coast a ways.

Somewhere in all that, I lost my social security card I discovered. That can be replaced.

This actually happened to me several months ago. There was a fire in our neighborhood, 2-3 houses away from ours, good thing our house was spared. We learned our lesson well, we created list of things to take in case this happens again and posted it where we could easily see it. And put all our important documents in hard plastic case.

One should have a list of the very basic and important things when situations like these arise. You won't be able to think clearly out of panic.

      Yep. Good ideas, Donny.

I would recommend that you scan your important docs and store them online though.
