Yeah, I was going to give you a detailed account of my moment of greatness, leaving nothing out, then realized that I had none. But, my intentions were good.

Yeah, the best I could do was make up a story about how I once saw legendary (but non-existent) door-to-door salesman Horace Bartholomew Schmidt -- The Man In the Plaid Suit himself -- eating pancakes, and how I failed to get his autograph on the hoof of my Icelandic horse (also fictional) because they wouldn't let me in the pancake shop with the horse. When I made such efforts in composition in academic exams, it didn't lead to good grades, especially in statistics or physics.

Wow - you sound like Alan Ginsberg in 'Howl for Carl Solomon'

You have it going on with that melodic spiel - even if you never got the pancakes. i mean autograph.

Oh now see you have reminded me of a moment of greatness.

I once stood in a doorway and Robin Williams stood in a doorway a few doors down. We made eye contact. (true story) What should I have done? Asked him for a part in a movie? OH autograph! autograph! duh!?! whoops.

Having my writing compared to one of America's greatest poets. That's as good as it gets, lol. Most writing nowadays is modeled on the Hemingway's simplicity than Allen Ginsberg's style.

I've met celebrities. The greatest thing about them is our imaginations. We're projecting something that isn't even them. Here and there I've had some involvement with celebrities. Some were nice, some -- most -- weren't. They don't even appear in my thoughts most of the time. Do I care about them? The answer is the same as, "Do they care about me?"

For what it's worth, Dennis, you deserve credit as the inspiration behind Horace Bartholomew Schmidt's plaid suit, lol.

lol - At least I've inspired something in this lifetime. Was that from the time I mentioned someone's favorite color being plaid?

Yes. That is when a lightbulb went off and I saw legendary door-to-door salesman Horace Bartholomew Schmidt -- The Man In The Plaid Suit himself. Here's someone who is able to generate wealth for himself with the tiniest sliver of opportunity, like a weed flourishing on some dirt trapped between two concrete sections of a sidewalk. He chats with illiterate bin divers and millionaire PhDs with equal ease and equal respect. He'll happily give all his money to a single mother in need and spend the night under a bridge instead of a 5-star hotel, then quickly recoup his losses.

Right - and by the way it did cross my mind that you must be one of the greatest dads in the world - that may be your greatest opportunity for greatness.

The way you always talk about him - I never see that - there are lots of good dads (at least around here) but they don't 'dote' like you do.

So this may not seem like a lot to most people but the world I live in great dads are a precious commodity. You have to be blessed to have one. Heck some people don't even know their dad's name...

    (seriously)

    Love you Tbird.

You are great already and just dont recognize it yet..., but as far as having that moment you are looking for, trust me, there are many moments with your name on them coming. In life we all get those at one point or another, its what you do with them that matters.

I came close to making it in music and blew it. I built comopanies and I blew them...You are young, its my hope that when those moments come you will look back on these posts and say "Im not gonna blow it like John did" and make the most of it.

That anguish and dissatifaction you feel is really an under current thats is getting ready to turn into a tidal wave. Trust me. Embrace it. Let it burn.

I felt it too. Before I got a pub deal I worked at a chicken plant of all things, and it sucked and I prayed every day for God to give me a moment to prove myself, and it came. Yours will too!

Just keep dreaming and dont ever stop! DONT EVER STOP young man! Dream!

Greatness is many things... and one of them has a T in front of it. You are an angel waiting for wings.

This is great advice. It applies to my toddler more than me. I'll save it for him. This has just set off a project in my life of putting together a book of wisdom for my son.

        You know T?

I always wanted to do that, and I BLEW it, and put it off till I forgot half the wisdom I wanted to put in it. Be like Solomon, and write your children a book of proverbs from their father.... Yeah, thats an excellent goal. Wish I could go back twenty years and tell myself "Do it now!"

But on another note, the kind of moments you are thinking of for your SELF, they will come too...the funny thing is that looking back the moments that truly meant the most, they were ones with my daughter on my shoulders, and those are the ones I wish there were more of.

That's a great idea. Here's an idea to add to it to make it even greater. Collect pictures and stories of your son and the important people in his life, and about all the relatives. Format it up nicely and get it made into a book using CreateSpace since it's so cheap. When he turns 21 give him a box of the books of his life.

Creating a book about the family and extended family that doesn't focus on one person is a great idea too. Imagine how great it would be to receive a gift like that! What a great heirloom too. I know I'd love to have first hand stories about my ancestors. Wow! The person who does that for their family will be adored now and revered for generations. Talk about a lasting legacy, you may never be forgotten.
