I love watching 1950's early 60's movies and shows.

Favorite movie: "Fastest Gun Alive" staring Glenn Ford. (1956)

Favorite shows: Gun Smoke
Lawman
The Rifleman
Bonanza

Who else likes to watch westerns?
  • "Bonanza" - (no bananas were harmed in the making of the series - not even by Hop Sing )

Though certainly not the best or most prolific...one of the Western Stars of the 50's that always struck me was Audie Murphy...

He had the most bizarre feat, of becoming the most decorated War Hero of WW2 - eventually going to Hollywood, and becoming a star in the process -also starring in a movie about his own life (To Hell and Back) - playing himself - and finally making 44 films in all.

There are stories that "gun slingers" in those movies would joke around as to who was fastest - but no one really wanted to challenge Murphy. They say he would take the challenge only if they agreed to use live ammunition, and he did not balk...though he looked like a kid still wet behind the ears, he had nerves of steel, and his war experiences haunted him until his death in a plane crash in 1971. Quite a unique individual in the history of western cinema...

(According to Arlington Cemetery records, the only grave site visited by more people than Murphy's is that of assassinated President John F. Kennedy.)

Though I am a huge western fan, I really can't pick a favorite movie...or actor from that era. Jimmy Stewart and Joel Mcrae both transitioned into westerns nicely, and Wayne will probably always be seen as the king by many...but there may only be a few good ones I haven't seen at least once...(I miss the Western Channel )

A little trivia...Glenn Ford was voted by some cowboy association as the best horse rider in Hollywood.

My favorites are the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western trilogy:

The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More.

I also really like Clint's other westerns, especially High Plains Drifter and Unforgiven.

But maybe my favorite movie of all time is Little Big Man, which is sort of the anti-western movie.

Favorite western TV shows are The Rifleman and Maverick.

      Great movies all. Especially Unforgiven.
But, my all time favorite is "Lonesome Dove" with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones.
Gus McRay, (Duvall), is one of the great characters of all time.

Until Clint's Man with No Name character shoots him.

Duvall was 'Ned Pepper' in True Grit - but as far as I can remember, he was never in a Spaghetti Western...(too bad, that)

He was in "Joe Kidd" (written by Elmore Leonard, and Directed by John Sturges), but Eastwood had a name in that one...(Joe Kidd) but Clint did shoot him

He was in "Lawman" with Burt Lancaster...that was kind of a pseudo spaghetti western...

I will add, over the years I've become a huge John Wayne fan.
"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" with Lee Marvin and Jimmy Stewart.
    "The Shootist" with Ron Howard.
"It ain't always the fastest draw, or the straightest shooter. It's the willin'.
I've won many a gun fight because the other guy hesitated".
    And, of course, "Rooster Cogburn".
"Fill your hand you son of a bitch!"

If you're into comedy at all, you just have to love "Blazing Saddles".
