So, Should I give up or keep going!?

Well I have been working hard at learning everything I can about internet marketing the last few weeks, and the last few days I have been trying to put what I have learned into action. Today is a down day for me, and I am just feeling like maybe I need to go get a job.

Will someone with experience, tell me if I am doing anything right? Do I need to start over? Or does it look by your expertise that I should give up?

My website is Technologyspot.org, I am completely new to wordpress and don't know how everything works yet. Everything I have so far I have pulled from Warrior Forums. If you don't want to go to my website... here is some links to my articles. Does it look like I will be able to do this?

There is a space between the .com and the rest of the link!

    You can't ever fail until you give up. I've been homeless for a year, I've been jailed for something a friend did and all kinds of setbacks as you can imagine. I live in a very questionable area so naturally I don't live around the best people.

    If you're passionate about something, perhaps start up a blog on it (Wordpress of course). The Domain + Hosting is only $25 when you go through Hostgator. It might be alot for you in your current situation but until then you can hit up Digital Point for fast article writing jobs via PayPal to be able to afford hosting and a domain.

    As for your site:
    - You do have a mailing list opt in, so that's definitely a good thing. Anyone interested in what you have to say, will subscribe.
    - I noticed you're only using 2 Ads. Google allows you to have 3 ads on any given page. Try an ad inside of your top post, a 336x280 where the text wraps around it. Do a text ad, people tend to click on those a lot more than banner or side ads.

    Other than that, don't ever give up.

    Thanks man I appreciate it. I did purchase this domain and hosting from go daddy and I am trying. I CAN get a job, I just really don't want to. I don't mind working, I just can't stand working under most people. I have enjoyed working under friends and family, but working for a corporation just bust my balls. I ask for a part time job and get put on full time, and asked to work overtime more often than not (a lot of the times, OFF the clock!!) And I just don't want that for me. Thanks for the words of encouragement, I have it setup where ads are placed at the end of every article as long as they are viewing the article itself and not on the home page, I will look into getting the wrap around though!

    There's no point in giving up.

    You either keep going or you keep going.

    Failure is when someone stops trying to achieve their goal. If you want to fail, give up.

    But in the end, you're just going to fail if you do that.

    I would say, take a break, reset your mind maybe, and start from scratch if you aren't succeeding with what you are doing.

    Might sound scary, but sometimes it's worth it to start from a clean slate.

      He probably means : you need to break up your paragraphs so the chunks of text are not so huge. Stick to about 3-5 sentences per paragraph. Double space between paragraphs.

      As far as font, choose one good one. Verdana is very popular, as is Arial. Usually about 10 or 12 point. Both are easy to read online. Some people choose a different font for headlines, which is fine. In fact, some Wordpress themes are designed with headlines of a different color and font.

      About your site. I somehow ended on a page that asks me to sign up... it has a bulleted list of about 5 items, but no box to actually sign up and no active link to move anywhere. I also could not get back to your main site from that page. I had to re-enter the URL and start over.

      You do need to focus on a smaller topic. Your site is more typical of what you will find on one of the major company sites. They have the staff to do all the work that is required on such a site - maintenance, content updates, keyword searches, marketing and promotion.

      Having 100 keywords doesn't mean 100 topics. Each keyword represents a new keyword - for example, computer repair, fix computer, computer repairs, fixing computer, fixing computers, how to fix computer... all focus on one topic: computer repair. It's easy to find 100 keywords with only a few topics.

      You need to do more keyword research to find what they call "long tail keywords". Those are keywords that consist of more than one or two words. For example, "how to fix my computer" is much more focused than computers or computer repairs. Think about what your keywords mean - how they can be interpreted.

      Computer repairs could mean, bring it in and we'll fix it, rather than, how to fix your own. So you need to be very specific on word choices so they are more relevant to your offers.

      If you're interested in technology, ie computer repairs, then I would reduce your content and focus to just that. Talk about what can go wrong, what certain problems mean - from that you will soon develop a much bigger list of keywords.

      As far as quitting, you're much too early into the game to even think about quitting, unless you're beginning to think it's not for you. It took me several years before I even started making any sales, and then only $100 now and then. But I'm not the best person to talk about financial success online. I know about the benefits of writing and submitting articles, submitting your URL to the top directories, and choosing good keywords... but I'm not consistent or persistent in my efforts, and that is very important.

      I began in 1998 when there was little online training available. It wasn't until about 5 years ago that it finally dawned on me what I needed to know. Prior to that, I was reading and trying to absorb absolutely everything, which wasn't necessary.

      Right here on the forum, I was told:

      Find one marketing method. Get it working, ie: making money or driving traffic, and then move on to another method. Don't scatter your energy. Focus, implement, continue learning, be persistent, and you will succeed... but it'll take more than a few weeks.

      P.S. You don't have any keywords in your meta tags of your site. You do have the description, so I assume you know where to add some keywords. You only need about 10 in the meta tags. More will cause the search engines to think you are word spamming, and they will penalize you for it.

    Very let down to know I did my research all wrong. I thought highly searched words with low competition would be good choices, but obviously its not the best. =/ Still have a lot to learn, and in the meantime I continue slaving away on Fiverr because that is exactly what it feels like!! To make a website pay $5 a month with Ads alone how many clicks is that generally for people? People make it seem so easy to get all that traffic, many talk about only having 1.. ONE article and achieving $15/month.

    Don't give up! - But my advice to you would be to focus your efforts on a more narrow niche. Your Technologyspot website is a good one to practice with as far as learning design and using Wordpress. But the information you have on there is way too generic to gain any interest. I mean be honest, would you stop on that website and be interested in reading what you've put there?

    You should focus your efforts on building a site for a more narrow niche, like Guild Wars 2. If it's something you're interested in, then it's easier for you to get others that are interested in it to read your stuff. You'll get more conversions if you yourself understand what it takes to get someone to convert. And making money online is all about getting people to take action.

    So it doesn't matter if you're selling something directly, collecting email addresses, or just trying to get more people to click your ads - you have to ask yourself, what would it take for me to do one of those things? And if you have ever done one of those things, then you should already have an understanding of what it might take.

    Thank you Gary, I understand exactly what you are saying. That is what I will do then. I work on technology mainly so that's why I made this site. I thought it would be a good idea to talk about each product, how to fix it, and give a place to buy it for affiliate commission.
    I only wrote a few of the articles, had someone write a few, and pulled some from the net, just trying to get some content, I figured could remove the bad ones as I went. The reason I chose a broad niche, was because of a thread that I read here about writing 100 articles for your website, 1 for each keyword.

    I've been trying to break into this industry since 2008 with little to no success, I've done the courses , read the books. I have also learned a number of programming languages, but I have just let it sit in my mind collecting dust. I have been avoiding action. In-action is the kiss of death in this industry.
    Last week and this week I have probably done more work designing and coding than I have done in the past 2 years.

    I don't want to be rude, but I don't want to say to myself I could of helped him and I didn't so I'm just going to say it. That website you've created, it'll never make any real money. If you really worked hard at it for a long period of time it may one day make $50 - $100 a month with Adsense but, the effort and time to get there just wouldn't make sense on any economic level.

    Like someone else said use it as a practice ground, but that's all it'll ever be. I think you still have a hell of a lot of learning to do. Take it from someone who as made just about every single mistake you could ever possibly make online. So I guess that classifies me as an expert.

    Thanks for the replies everyone! Well, it gets a few vistors a day. Haha... Sometimes 1. It has only been up for about 2 weeks however. The type of website I would really like is to give product reviews and have people buy the item, I don't really want to try to sell WSO's or really market dead things to people. How should I go about this then? Can it be accomplished with wordpress?

    I have a brick wall of a heart, there is no hurting me. I know I am an amateur and am only trying to learn!

    Unless you have bills to pay keep going, do more research, learn and do.
    If you have bills to pay i would suggest getting a job and learning at the same time.
    Why?
    It could take months even years to build a online business that will support you financially.

    I have definitely felt disheartened, but I really want to make this work. I really want to move to New York, and I know that isn't going to happen without some sort of online business supplementing my income.

    You are right, I suppose I just had it in my head that I am one of the big dogs and could do what it took. I am beginning to learn more about keywords, and how far from right I was with them. I hate for you to say it could take years, to be wildly successful, I have no doubt! To make $100-200 month off something, gah. Not sure that's even worth it.

    I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to leave such a great reply. I am going to keep at it. I have been writing for Fiverr, but it honestly feels like slave labor haha... I am going to keep doing that, and figure out how to tighten my niche. As I said I really would like to just sell products, obviously would need the traffic to sell them. Is it best to tailor a site around one product, or can I go on a rant about everything!? lol

      You are welcome.

      It looks like I might have misled you somewhat regarding how long it takes to start making money. For me, it was a few years because I didn't really know what I was doing and was scattering my efforts all over the place. This was very ineffective. Also, I didn't really do as much marketing as it felt like I was doing. For instance, last year, I went to Ezine Articles, which was my main marketing avenue, and counted how many articles I'd written in about a year. It was less than 100. That shocked me, because it felt more like 500.

      Also, I was not consistent in my marketing. I'd do a big splurge for a week, then nothing much for a month - sometimes longer. That doesn't work. You have to be doing something every single day to market your business - whether it's to submit one article to 10 article directories, submit your link to site directories, or using the social media.

      In the end, you want to have a good selection of marketing avenues that work for you. That's why I said, do one, see if it works, and then after a few weeks or a month, see if you are getting results. If not, make that a second priority and focus on another method. Of course, you can do 2-3 marketing avenues at a time - whatever your time allows - but you want to track the results (something I never did). If you don't, you won't know what's working and what isn't, which means you could be wasting a lot of time.

      As a perfect example, I thought the traffic exchanges were a terrific idea. You join all these sites, put up a promotional page, and then visit those other sites to rack up points. Those points translate into how many times your site appears when everyone else is "surfing" the sites. After a year, I became extremely skeptical of this method and learned from places like the Warrior Forum just how useless it is. You can imagine how many hours I wasted clicked through the system viewing websites that did not interest me.

      One method that I did fine extremely useful was to use one of the article distribution networks. I used submityourarticle.com which some successful Warriors use. You buy a yearly membership and submit your articles. The site then distributes them for you to hundreds of sites and groups. It took about 3 months to start seeing consistent results and making sales. So if article marketing is one of your options, you might want to join. Watch for posts here on article marketing. There are a lot of great tips from Warriors who are using this method of promotion.

      As far as taking 2 years to make money - that was just me. Some people jump in and start making month in their first month - others are supporting themselves in 6 months to a year. But it's all in the marketing - something I was / am very weak in - yet that is the determining factor to success.

      Become a great marketer for your chosen product.

      I fully agree with you about writing for fiverr - it IS slave labor. I occasionally write for other people, but then I think, "Why am I putting my efforts into writing for other people to make money when I could be writing to promote my own business(es)?"

      If you need money to keep you going, I would suggest looking for assignments that pay something of value - Don't fiverr people only pay $5 or something? There are other writing sites that will pay you more. Check around. I understand some people do well with Elance where you can look for and submit quotes on various writing jobs that are offered. Another one is Associated Content. I'm not sure how much they pay, but it seems to me someone has said it's pretty good - better than $5 at least.

      While doing those assignments, set aside some time to write your own articles, too, and get them out. I use Ezine Articles, as do many Warriors. They are one of the top article sites for marketers, but their writing guidelines are a bit strict, ie: you can't put affiliate links in your articles or bio box, and you can't be blatantly promotional. You have to offer valuable, helpful content. Then you can put a simple call to action in your bio box. Some warriors submit to about 5 top article sites. You can find a list by running a search of the warrior forum. I used Searchwarp, Ezine Articles and a few others I can't recall right now.

      Another way to benefit with article marketing is to search for other sites offering complementary products to what you are offering. Ask if they would be willing to publish your articles, provided you can have your site link included. The benefit here is that these are sites in businesses similar to yours, which means they are more relevant than a generic site. This means that the search engines will rate your link more highly.

      You might even ask the owner if they'd be interested in some sort of joint venture. You're probably not in a position now to do a mailing of substance, but you could offer to write a report or mini- ebook for them to send out to their list. The sharing is: you offer the work for free that some owners just don't have time to do, and in turn, they distribute your book with your link inside.

      The more of this type of marketing you do, the sooner you will begin to see profits.

      P.S.: You can have a site that covers a number of related products, but you don't want too many. It's tougher to focus your marketing and keyword choices when you have too many products. I tried doing a book site and added about 15 books on different topics. I was really confused about how to find the right keywords to market it, since there weren't too many specific keywords related to "books". I ended up with things like, "ebook website", "download ebook" and other equally useless phrases. I went with categories, like fitness books but I wasn't about to fill up a whole page with fitness books. There weren't that many good ones out there, to be honest. I wanted to make sure my site offered quality books. I ended up with business books, self help books, travel books and fitness books. It was much easier to handle marketing that smaller range. I'd write articles promoting each type of book. For instance, I'd do a fitness article offering helpful ways to build muscle and then link it to one of my fitness books. These were all affiliate books, by the way. So keep that in mind when deciding how to focus your site.

        That last post was getting really big, so here are a few pointers I forgot.

        When you set up your site, include product reviews. Then, when you write those articles, you can send people to your review, which is quite legal with Ezine Articles. They want to see that you are linking to more useful information, not just a product sales page. You can link to a product sales page, but it's best to include a review on it, and then provide the link from there to your sales page or affiliate page.

        That's what I do and it's quite effective. When people click your article, they want to see something more than just a sales pitch. Of course, in this case you'd probably want your submitted article to be a helpful hints article which links to your product review. From there, you entice them to click your affiliate link or sales link.

        Whenever you write anything, always keep in mind what your reader wants to know. Basically, 'what's in it for me'? Don't rattle on about the product unless you go at it from how it benefits the user (and will benefit your reader). Get your reader involved right at the beginning to hold their interest. If you can't hold their interest for the first 3 sentences, you've lost them.

        Oh, and make sure you do the proper keyword placement in your articles. Put it in your headline, in your first sentence, once somewhere in the middle, and again at the end. It's best if you hyperlink the keyword in your bio box to your sales or preview page. In turn, that preview page should have the keyword. It makes it all relevant.

        Of course there are many ways to market a site. Since I'm a professional writer, article marketing works best for me. It's what I know and it's what I'm good at. I can easily crank out the articles, which is great because I don't want to work that hard.

        You can learn a great deal about other marketing methods on the Forum. It's a true learning environment - probably better than any library in fact, because it's all first hand experiences on what works and what doesn't. Plus, the Warriors are always ready and willing to help you with any problems or questions you might have. As long as you show you are serious, you'll have no shortage of help here.
