My friend from visited Sweden last year and he have some unspent money. He gave me 600 Swedish Krona but this is useless because there is no money changer her or bank that exchange this money...

Any suggestion on what to do with this money? It's around $90 I think....

Can you get to an international airport? They often take a wider variety of currencies than the exchange kiosks in town, although the rates are usually worse.

Can you wire it back to the person? Might ask the bank.

Theoretically, you could find someone planning to go to Sweden and exchange for cash, but that's not legal so you didn't hear that from me.

Call your bank. They can tell you where you can exchange it.

They don't. Only selected currencies are negotiable here since Sweden is not so popular here...

Give me a break! US banks aren't like european banks. I went to wells fargo, one of the countries oldest and largest banks, and they had problems cashing a CANADIAN check!!!!!!!! You want foreign currency? FORGET your average US bank.

As I understand it, most exchange places buy/sell currency like places buy/sell gold. They basically reduce or increase the exchange rate a bit n their favor, and tack on a fee. They DON'T merely charge a percentage, so you should figure the rate from a public and reliable source before checking services.

I still have a few hundred dollars worth of foreign currency. Danish, German, and Swiss.

Philippines just not have any transaction with Sweden that's why this currency is a garbage here (unless of course I go to Sweden). Or else there is someone from Sweden who is willing to receive this paper in exchange for USD...

Serious suggestion: Adie, find a Swedish goods store (IKEA?) and see if they will accept it.

3 people already told me they are willing to exchange it for dollar but the problem is I can't mail it to Sweden as it is illegal and you are correct... I'll just keep it as souvenir.. who knows, I might travel to Sweden someday if I make much money in IM.. .

It IS legal to exchange currency, and many DO do it, but MOST US banks DON'T! If you are in New York, there are some US backs that, as I understand it, DO do such things. But I checked places in california, indiana. and several other states, and they DON'T!

In EUROPE, last time I was there, EVERYONE exchanged various currencies. It is just one of the little differences.

If you REALLY want to exchange such currency in the US:

    1. Friends/neighbors that could use it.
    2. SOME shops dealing with precious metals, this includes some jewelry shops.
    3. Exchange centers.
    4. SOME banks, like a swedish bank, or one affiliated, MIGHT take your currency.
    5. SOME branches of banks.

BTW places with customs areas, like some airports, have exchange centers.

So it isn't "can you do it". OF COURSE you can! The question is WHERE, and HOW MUCH. My mother once went to a jewlery store, that sold precious metals, and exchanged currency, and bought some ILLEGAL CURRENCY! It wasn't illegal to buy/sell here, but the producing country forbid its transfer outside of their country! They didn't have MUCH, but she got the money!

Well, in your country it might be legal. Where I live you can only exchange currencies through a licensed business like a bank or exchange booth.

People exchange with each other all the time, though. It's not like anyone's ever going to know. The problem would be finding someone planning a trip to Sweden if you don't have a lot of Swedes there. Maybe go and hang around outside a Lutheran church. Tell them you want to convert...currencies, that is. (Sorry, bad joke.)

Also, you could mail it back rather than let it go to waste. I think mailing cash is also illegal, though.
