Huh? I can't figure out what exactly this means and is it a good or bad thing?

Google to include people's Gmail in search results - Toshiba

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Google's Internet search engine is getting more personal by highlighting information drawn from its users' Gmail accounts on its main results page.

The feature announced Wednesday marks Google's latest attempt to deliver data that people are seeking more quickly as it tries to maintain the dominance of the Internet search engine, the business that generates most of the company's revenue.

Gmail's more than 425 million users already can search within their personal e-mail accounts to find something they need, such as an order from Amazon.com or an airline reservation.

Now, Gmail users who are logged into their accounts will be shown a list of relevant e-mails on Google's main search results page if the correspondence is contains a word entered in a search request.

Google Inc. is initially testing the feature with just 1 million Gmail users.

    WTF!! The END of privacy.

The government agencies are gonna love this feature! Time to ditch Gmail.

If they do ****ANYTHNG**** in keeping with what they say...
    Tie Topics to a person
Link to read and/or write access to a person
    show messages

It is PATENTLY ILLEGAL! In fact, if there are passwords, private info, etc... They could even be guilty of FELONIES! I mean give me a BREAK!

That said? This admin is ALSO breaking the law. They created their OWN database, that WE paid for, that was loaded by the CIA, FBI, and who knows what else. For use by the whitehouse!

BTW SURE I know EMAIL is unsafe and not private, but it was a risk I took based on info I had! One mitigation was the RANDOM info so multiple posts weren't tied together. My email did/does that. And I am using a PASSWORD and HTTPS to protect that. If they release my info, I WILL pursue EVERY avenue!

Could just mean they'll include results from the user's own mailbox, not other people's. In which case.... Not really an issue.

When I first read it, I thought that I saw something specifically excluding that, but MAYBE you are right in that only a given user could read their OWN email through the search engine.

That may be legal, and SEEMINGLY, a nice idea if right, but imagine the NOISE! What if someone virtually forces you to do a search while they are there, or does a search while you have no control. SAME THING! It is like the screens that start playing who knows what the moment you go there.

I still think it is a bad idea. OK, what happens if you have something sensitive that pops up at the wrong time? And it is ANOTHER thing to test for on some computers I have to use from time to time. Hopefully the recent password change I did means older systems won't work.

After a couple of reads I thought that too, Paul. But what would be the point? I pretty much know what is in my email and I can search my email.

Also, I use Google Alerts for topics I frequently search. Why would I want results from my own email box that they are already providing?

There is something hinkey here. It's like they haven't quite dropped the other shoe yet.

Of course they aren't going to include other people's emails in your search results.

I think it is a great idea.

If I'm the only one who gets to view the search results of my email then no problems. But if others can view my emails then we've got a big problem here..

I am already afraid to sign up for a Gmail account because Google+ instantly indexed your profile with your full name. I dont like this way of progress. Let me have some privacy online.

Before you trust anything they say consider this latest example:

"Google has agreed to pay the largest fine ever imposed on a single company by the US Federal Trade Commission.

The firm agreed to pay $22.5m (£14.4m) after monitoring web surfers using Apple's Safari browser who had a "do not track" privacy setting selected."

Ummm... I'm pretty outspoken about not trusting Google - or anyone else - with large amounts of personal data. I just try to be rational about the evidence for my paranoias.
