What is the scariest movie you've ever seen?

Yep, those two got me and basically anything with demons or ghosts, I refuse to watch. Another old scary movie you need to check out is the Changeling, I think it had George C. Scott in it. I won't ever watch that again either. Oh and add "The Grudge" to that. I didn't understand it but I couldn't sleep afterwards either.

Wasn't the Changeling the one with Angelia Jolie? Yeah, that was more upsetting than scary. The Grudge sounds creepy. I won't watch that. Have you ever seen Rosemary's Baby?

Satan's Triangle, a made-for-tv movie from the mid 70s with Doug McClure, Kim Novak, and Alejandro Rey.

No blood or gore, but the last 10 minutes have stuck in my head for 30+ years.

A close second would be The Omen with Gregory Peck.

The Entity I thought was quite scary but when I was a kid I watched CHUD and I couldn't get to sleep for ages, that's the only film that really scared me. I watched CHUD a few years later and although it wouldn't scare me if I was "grown up" and watching it for the first time the music in it really helped make it scary I think.

I can see that. The idea of not knowing what layer of reality you exist in is pretty spooky.

I love horror fiction - even did dissertations on it in college. I couldn't tell ya which movie bothered me the most. For the most part none of them really get me deep like a good horror fiction book can. Too much of your own mind's imagery allowed to roam when reading. When watching it is someone else's rendition so it's further removed from me emotionally.

I've tried to think of any movies that just left me sitting stunned at the end of them. I know it's happened but can't really think of which movies they were right now other than one or two of the Hell Raiser series.

Now, entertaining, favorite?...in the horror genre?

I have a few that I enjoyed a lot that might have even made me jump for a
second because of something happening suddenly...such as...

Carrie

The end, where the hand comes out of the grave? Was at a drive in and
almost went through the car roof. Never saw that coming. One of the best
scenes ever.

Another one...

House On Haunted Hill

When the girl is searching through the house, turns around and comes eye to
eye with the floating witch. That made me jump a bit too. Of course I was like
8 years old at the time.

Psycho

The shower scene
Martin Balsom's death scene
The end

Great stuff!

And of course...

Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
Dracula (original)
The Wolf Man (original)
The Invisible Man

All the old classics from the 30s and 40s and some 50s gems.

The newer stuff? Meh. Just a lot of blood and gore and no imagination.

That first part of the Stand (I think there's a movie, but I've never seen it - the book is what I'm talking about) gave me the willies every time I sneezed for a year after reading it.

The Sixth Sense is haunting. There wasn't a time I was actually "scared" - but the thesis concept is really chilling.

It, by King - book and movie both is unsettling to me........it's the clown. They are just creepy. So are dolls.

Yes, many "ideas" and "concepts" are unsettling and a little creepy. Some
movies that come to mind.

The Day After
Colossus: The Forbin Project
Night of the Living Dead
War of the Worlds
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Incredible Shrinking Man

I'll stop there because I could go on forever in making this point.

We have become very desensitized to entertainment.

But imagine these things really COULD happen in real life.

Imagine you're standing out in your backyard one day and see hundreds of
nuclear missiles flying overhead and you realize what's about to happen.

Imagine you discover that a computer has taken over our missile system
and has taken our whole world hostage.

Imagine people really could turn into zombies and start eating each other.

Imagine you're driving down the road one night, see something hurtling
towards the earth, it lands, out of it comes these machines, and they start
blasting everything in sight.

Imagine your body could be taken over and you become a pod person.

Imagine you can suddenly start shrinking to the size of an ant and smaller
until eventually you disappear from the face of the earth.

The list of horrible things depicted in movies that, if they really DID happen,
would scare the crap out of us, is long enough to fill up the library of the AFI.

But we've seen so much in all the years of cinema that we've lived through
that it's almost impossible for anything to really phase us. At least in my case
this is painfully true, which is why there are so few movies that try to simply
scare us to death that do anything to me because beyond the "scare factor"
there is no acting, no direction, no nothing.

That is why I prefer movies that make me think. That's why movies like The
Incredible Shrinking Man (if you haven't seen it you really have to) are some
of my favorites of all time.

Parnaormal activity (i still have yet to see the newest ones)

I just saw the remake of War of the Worlds last night (2004, I think). It was incredible. I usually don't care either way about remakes - and Time Machine stunk so bad I just ignored remakes after that. But this was SO good.

You might be right, Steven - we are desensitized. There are still little things hiding behind doors in our minds that will always be spooky to us. I like movies that are mind tilters (not so cordially otherwise known as the mind f *). The Sixth Sense, the first couple of Hell Raisers - the Others. Things that twist around in ways you just never anticipated.

Inception was one of those and had a lot of science mixed in and that one worked for me. I'm still wondering if the top fell over or not. I'm thinking it didn't.

Watched it when I was a teen.. was trippin balls & decided it would be fun - Boy was I wrong..

That threw me into the worst trip of my life. lol no joke.

Geez - I can't believe no one has mentioned "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - it's a classic!

Oh, and that transmission tower climb - I have climbed some pretty high towers, and that video scared the crap out of me

- but on the plus side...it was a really nice view :rolleyes:
