I read online in Norwegian media that Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon died today 82 years old.

Is it true? I can't find anything about it on American media..

I had just turned 9 when he walked on the moon. My dad let me stay up to watch it, and it was past midnight when it finally happened. Even at 9 I knew it was big. Unforgettable indeed.

  • Neil Armstrong - August 5, 1930 - August 25, 2012

Upon his passing, Neil's family said "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

  • BTW: (in case you had ever wondered)
Armstrong composed the phrase "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" in his head approximately 2 hours before setting foot on the lunar surface between the landing and going through emergency liftoff procedures.

It's worth noting that Armstrong's quote had been misunderstood because of static. He actually said "One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind"

He seemed a very quiet, humble man who let his actions and achievements speak for him. I would say those are the signs of a truly great man...

      Rest in Peace.

I remember that day back in 1969. I was in primary school, and every classroom had a tv in it. Even the corridors had tv sets showing the event.

I strongly suspect that was for the benefit of the teachers more than the pupils though.

Being only 7 years old at the time the magnitude of what we saw didn't register until a few years later, however I'm glad I witnessed the human race's greatest achievement as it was happening.

There are actually tears rolling down my face as I type this.

RIP Neil. One small step for (a) man, one giant loss for mankind.

RIP Neil. History will long remember you.
As little kids, I don't think we realized how impossible it was to do...it just seemed kind of magical that he was doing it. I think...from then on - it almost seemed (at least for a little while) that anything was possible, if you just set your mind to it - anything could be achieved. We had all witnessed a milestone in human history.

I was in Florida at my Grandparents, on vacation with my parents. The mood was extremely solomn. I had a friend with me for the trip and we were outside just hanging out waiting. When they (the adults) called us in, we all sat down in front of the TV. Grandma was messing with the antennae and tinfoil and Grandad was harping on her that it was being broadcast from the moon so don't hope for a clear reception.

My friend and I were growing up during a time of fast changes - technological and social - we knew that this was immense, but it didn't strike us as unusual that we would do something like this. My grandparents were just stunned almost speechless. Almost. Both were able to get a few words out now and again -- and repeatedly: "Oh my God", "Oh my God". Everyone cheered when that first foot came down on the surface, and grandma cried when he spoke:
"One small step for man - one large leap for mankind"

And then everyone decided I was silly and should stop being silly because I had said I'd love to do something like that -- and they all knew that women did NOT do things like that and I needed to concentrate on getting a real job like a secretary.

And suddenly the 70's rolled in on us.

    RIP Neil. Wherever you are.

  • Astronaut Neil Armstrong's parents, Stephen Koenig Armstrong and Viola Louise Engel Armstrong have a secret that their son was just made an astronaut on this very day at 3 PM, September 17, 1962. Armstrong was one of nine new men so chosen...

Host Garry Moore asks an incredible question, "Now, how would you feel, Mrs. Armstrong, if it turned out - of course nobody knows - but if it turns out that your son is the first man to land on the moon? What, how do, how would you feel?"

He asks this nearly seven years before it actually happens on July 20 1969 - Neil's mom's reply is priceless, "Well, guess I'd just say god bless him and I wish him the best of all good luck." Neil Armstrong did not see this recording until 40 years after it originally aired.

At least, (unlike say, Columbus) we could see Neil was the first (on TV!) - unless of course, someone had already been to the moon, but forgot to mention it to anyone or leave a flag...
