Just heard the sad news about Hal David's passing, although the songs he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach will live on for as long as music's played.

The obvious classics include Walk On By, I Say A Little Prayer, Alfie, (They Long To Be) Close To You, Always Something There To Remind Me and many others, but I always chuckle when I recall these lines from I'll Never Fall In Love Again:

What do you get when you kiss a guy?
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia
After you do, he'll never phone ya
I'll never fall in love again

RIP Hal David.

And just occasionally, they get way too much (Bernie Taupin, anyone?). But there's no doubt that Hal David was one of the finest lyricists in popular music.

Another very great talent gone. Sigh. It seems like they are going so fast now. I sure hope that we have a lot of talent in line to keep us in quality tunes until we get to hear the "big band" in the sky.

    RIP Hal.

    A Great Talent.
    RIP Hal David.
    Thanks for Everything!

This is still frequently played on oldies channels. It almost seems like it is still on the 'pop charts' I hear it so often. Still like it after all these years!

Got to say I missed the news of his passing.

He co-wrote so many great songs.

I think the biggest surprise that I didn't know was the song Always Something There To Remind me.

To go off topic a sec,but still in the context of the thread,Frank,I have to disagree with you for a change.I think Elton John would not have become the star he did with out Taupin's lyrics.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread.Pat,that is one of my all time favorite songs .
I think Lynn recently posted this version in another thread:

I could have sworn I had a version of the song by The Status Quo too,but I can't find it.

    Anyways, RIP.

Ha ha. I wondered if anyone would pick up on that.

Kim, we'll have to agree to disagree, but in my view, anyone who'd have the gall to come up with lyrics(?) like these:

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did

...should be eternally grateful to have hooked up with such a huge musical talent as Elton John.

Well, I have to admit I don't think ALL his lyrics were great!

No offense kim, but the tone of much of the voice, the sound, style, and even the music in sandie shaws version isn't as good as the other. 8-(

And FRANK, How many even really listen to the lyrics? I shouldn't say this, but I heard that song " I'll Never Fall In Love Again" HUNDREDS of times. I do NOT think I am exaggerating. Between my dads car, long rides, malls, tv, etc... This stuff would almost be hard to escape! I don't know if I ever thought about that verse. It IS easy to hear though. The tune, and basic thought really built good music. A lot of the rest is just dressing. But these songs are good catchy tunes with good basic thoughts.

Steve, maybe I'm unusual, but if I like a song, I just have to hear it a few times and the lyrics are imprinted in my brain. I could probably recite hundreds of albums' worth of lyrics to you right off the bat.

You might be right, but he doesn't sound like he is screaming 80% of the time.

But yeah, the accent DOES add something. Funny, just yesterday I watched a video from a dane. Her father IS american, but she was born and raised in denmark with her danish mother. She was asked why she spoke english like an american. One answer that she gave was that she heard a lot of english music, and even british people tend to sing with an american accent. That is sometimes true, but sometimes not... But oh well, I don't know how much of a difference it would have made here.

BTW she said her teacher tried to FORCE her to speak with a british accent, but failed. To any danes here, is that generally the case? all the danes I have spoken with seem to have a washed out british accent, like someone from britain that has been in the US a few decades maybe. It isn't bad, but it isn't like you are straight from britain either. So if they are trying to make you sound british, they are failing! Still, not bad. It is understandable and nice.
