OMG!

The FBI raided our Tubby's today and arrested the owner who I talked with every time we went there and ordered our subs. They also raided the owner's home in West Bloomfield. Rumors are he was building explosives!

Scarey!

That is a hard charge to beat. take any three random things, and you potentially have a device to deliver explosives.

If he is guilty, good they got him.. score one for the good guys...

    if not...

man o man it sucks to be him right now

We'll just wait and see what happens and find out what he was doing, if he was doing anything at all. If it was nothing, go back to our normal days, and if it was something, we'll let it play out," said Folkoff.
I found that comment refreshing - good to know there are still people who wait for the facts before they start crucifying someone.

As refreshing as that may be, how often does the FBI raid a place for "nothing"?

I mean they raided his business too and they brought out boxes and such from both places.

If the FBI is wrong though, because of the man's nationality, there could be some major back lash.

I can not answer that. but i can say,
they raided my business, 6 days after 911 because I employed
people who went to emery riddle aeronautical university.

they shut me down COMPLETELY for 3 days.

ha.. actually, i had a few incomplete job apps... they even tried to fine me.

          Whoa!

Yeah, things have gone crazy after 911. There's no doubt about that. I rather dread flying now. The time they pulled me aside and had me frisked and searched for no reason while hubby watched wide eyed and helpless to help me kind of did it in for me. They were yelling at me and talking to me like I was dirt. Almost had me in tears

He probably wasn't doing anything wrong because the neighbors say he keeps up his lawn.

    Terrorists do not do lawns.

LOL - sorry - it always cracks me up how neighbors figure somebody is good or bad - and of course if he did let his grass die, (seriously) he would be weird. (how ugly)

It's ok - I used to have an Aunt (RIP) that thought anybody that had crooked shades was a gypsy. As silly as it is I am always sure not to have anything like that. Nope, not me...

The FBI, etc... is OFTEN wrong! Just today I watched an episode of the sadly named "American Greed". They spoke of how the FBI PAID a crook to "help" them while he hatched a fantastic international crime syndicate, UNDER THEIR NOSES!

You don't hear about a lot of their successes, and even EWER of their failures.

But not all people hoarding arms are evil murderers! In fact, most probably AREN'T!

Larry Folkoff is the one that isn't "all that sure". Folkoff is the neighbor, not a member of the FBI that raided the place. You've somehow transposed "they" (The FBI) with a neighbor of the suspect (Folkoff), a slightly important distinction IMO.

Well, we'll find out more at his court arraignment today.

          @Steve,

You're right, just because you have a lot of guns doesn't mean you're up to no good. Before my dad passed, he had 3 whole cases full of them. He was an avid hunter and a shooting instructor at a target range.

It was the allegations of constructing explosives that was scarey.

That very well may be the case in some places, but here in Lake Orion? Uh-uh!

Stuff like that is so rare, that on rare occasion when the police search a vehicle or house, etc. people pull up lawn chairs to watch. I kid you not.

So the FBI wanting us to view this as a normal part of everyday life? Not gonna happen!

Last night I saw a lone terrorist place a big white bomb in the middle of a McDonalds and threaten to detonate it if he didn't get 20 Big Macs with extra cheese.

When he turned his back to me to fill up the drinks, I quickly ran to the bomb and swallowed the thing in one gulp, ran outside and saved the day.

When I woke up from dreaming my pillow was gone.

Here is some more information I found on the incident from The Oakland Press:

The owner of a Lake Orion’s Tubby’s Sub Shop faces federal charges after an FBI investigation and raid at the restaurant Wednesday.

According to a complaint prepared by the U.S. District Court, Eastern District, in Detroit, the FBI had several conversations with a witness who spoke directly with Alaa Manuel Qasawa of West Bloomfield. The sub shop is on Lapeer Road.

From these discussions, the FBI concluded Qasawa was attempting to purchase and manufacture explosives in violation of federal law.

The investigation began Aug. 8 when FBI special agents interviewed a cooperating witness at that person’s workplace, Inert Products LLC in Scranton, Pa. The witness discussed receiving a suspicious call from a man who asked about blasting caps, which Inert Products manufactures.

The witness, never named in the complaint, said he had a telephone conversation Aug. 3 with Alaa Qasawa who ordered a crimping tool from Inert Products.

The witness asked Qasawa why he needed the crimping tool, and the witness said Qasawa “stammered” a bit in answering and then said he was going to use it to cut wires for work.

On Aug. 7, the witness had another call from Qasawa during which he asked about ordering a box of 50 inert blasting caps, described as “deluxe non-electronic detonators” on Inert Products’ website.

The caps have one end sealed and a hole drilled through the body to help the user see that the cap is empty and inert.
The witness asked Qasawa what he was doing with the blasting caps and Qasawa replied he was a private collector.

The witness told the FBI that he thought that was unusual and he was suspicious a private collector would want 50 blasting caps.

At this time the witness told Qasawa that most of his company’s products were intended for sale to government agencies for training or the movie business for film-making. Qasawa asked if the company sold grenade bodies without holes in the bottom, and the witness answered no, only solid plastic replica grenades. Qasawa didn’t want that, said the witness.

Qasawa asked the witness to let him know if he could get hold of the “good stuff.” The witness said he guessed this meant Qasawa wanted items that were unavailable to private individuals.

The witness said on Aug. 17, Qasawa called Inert Products again and asked if the witness was sure he couldn’t get Qasawa a blasting cap.

The witness told Qasawa this was not possible. Qasawa asked for the measurements of a blasting cap so that “as a collector, I could get one made myself.” The witness said he was sorry but he could not give out that information.

The FBI in the complaint stated they believe Qasawa “may be attempting to make an improvised explosive device.”

On Aug. 22, the witness made a monitored call to Qasawa and advised Qasawa the “boss was out for the day and that the witness might be able to get Qasawa some blasting caps.”

Qasawa asked how many could be acquired and the witness said 10 and Qasawa agreed.

The witness asked if Qasawa wanted more, and he answered he would be “as long as he does not get into any trouble.”

The witness said he would not get into trouble because the caps would be without explosives.

Qasawa agreed to pay $10 for each cap or $100. He said he would pay by money order. Qasawa and the witness discussed other equipment during which Qasawa stressed he was interested “as long as it’s legal. I don’t want to go to jail for anything and I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

Qasawa stated again he was a collector.

Agents concluded from the calls that Qasawa already possessed explosives, including an M228 — which is a pyrotechnic delay igniting fuse used in conjunction with an M69 grenade body — and was in need of blasting caps without holes, or he was attempting to build a fully functional M228 fuse assembly.

On Aug. 23, the witness made another FBI-monitored call to Qasawa, letting him know the shipment was ready but that the witness wanted to make sure the items being sent were correct. The witness offered to sell Qasawa an entire grenade assembly, which are illegal to sell to the public.

Qasawa agreed to pay $25 for the assembly. Qasawa also asked for blasting caps to go with the M228 fuse. The witness said they were hard to get. They discussed how the grenade would be handled and shipped. Qasawa asked if the witness could get four or five a month, and the witness said he would try.

The FBI said they concluded Qasawa — who is not licensed to have explosives by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives or the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office — is attempting to manufacture explosive devices.
    Holy crap!

Now I don't know what to think.

I know how you feel about that one. When I worked at the Academic Development Center in Flint, at Mott CC, I had a student that was an immigrant from Laos. He worked at some sort of concentration camp there. He killed for the regime. I had him in one on one sessions. He was advanced in English and we talked symbolism and it took us into philosophy. Was a really eerie experience.

    Actually lets consider some stuff..

A hard working business owner. Pleasant to customers. Bet he invested lots of his own money to build a business and work 8-12 hour days to build it and make it operational.

Responsible for finding the time to..

    Create a business plan
    Fund the business
    Find venders/people to find them
Time for zoning paperwork & fees
    Company meetings
Paperwork for employees, venders, employee training, etc
Taxed out the ass for such operations
    Interviewing managers to train employees
    Paying employees
    Paying continually increasing taxes
Paying for continually increasing supply costs

Then one day, decides to throw all the hard work out the window to spend what little money his business entity made for explosive supplies...

    Sound familiar?

Same old story. Same old song and dance.

Fast & Furious, Batman shooting. Whatever. Just be scared of your neighbor because we said so. We are the authority here. No need to question us. The FBI are your real friends. Trust us. Really.

          Hmmm,

          Could the FBI have overreacted?

The wife of 49-year-old Alaa Manuel Qasawa sobbed in a federal courtroom Thursday as she learned he would not be going home with her and other relatives. In court documents, an FBI agent agent wrote that "Qasawa may be attempting to make an improvised explosive device and is in the process of acquiring the necessary components".
But Mitch Ribitwer, an attorney for Qasawa, believes the government overreacted and says the father of four is simply a collector of military items.
"Eventually, the truth will come out and hopefully he'll be vindicated", said Ribitwer..
Another attorney for Qasawa, Doraid Markus, tells 7 Action News that his client wasn't looking to make a bomb and he's not a terrorist."
Markus says FBI agents seized his client's guns, grenades and computers. He says all of the guns are legal and registered.
Markus added that some of the grenades are fake and for display purposes only. But, on some holidays, he says his client would detonate grenades containing small amounts of explosive material in his backyard.

I guess here's the question: what did he do that's actually illegal? We're getting into thought crime if the issue is in the potential of his stash.

Now, I don't know anything about this type of stuff, so I don't know if there's a maximum amount of these items a private citizen can own or if they can even buy them. However, it really feels like entrapment if the only way he was able to buy illegal provisions was through the sting operation.
