How the stupid IT Guy just made me lose out on a million dollars!

Okay I just need to rant real quick.

First let me start by saying I've been lurking around here for a long time but not posting. It's not because I don't want to be social, but I feel like if I don't have anything worth saying there isn't a reason to speak. I don't like when I see little posts that say "oh cool" so I don't make them myself. I say that to say this, You don't have to comment on this rant just to beef up your post count. It won't really help and I don't want to come back here and read it hoping someone really has something to say just to see "That sucks"

Now, on to my rant.

I'm in the military. I've been in for 10 years. My job is one that I enjoy, but there isn't always a lot for me to do and since I'm sitting at a desk and have a computer there are tons I can look at to keep myself busy...

At least that's what I thought before the government decided to tell me what they think I should be looking at.
They block certain sites that they don't deem appropriate or that will take up too much bandwidth or spread viruses. I get it, trust me I do.
Here is why I'm pissed off...

I can sit at my desk all day and watch youtube videos. I can even download music and anything else I can find... You know what I can't do?

I can't sign up for a newsletter!
How does that even make sense!? I come across a really nice looking site here on the warrior forum and I'm interested in being told when the product is available and I can't because as soon as I press submit I get sent to a page saying the page is blocked!

I just don't understand how aweber's add a lead page is blocked but NOT a website that allows you to download free music. Who is the idiot that is actually blocking these sites and what does he have against aweber?

I really hope he is happy because now I have to send myself an email with a link to the website I was looking at and hope that I remember to check it and go the site when I get home from work, which will probably not happen since I am also a single mom of two little girls and forget to check my email and when I do it's full of so many other things that I say I will look at later when I have the chance. The chance obviously never comes since I now have more than 20k unread emails that I'm afraid to delete because yea some of them are probably useless information but a lot of them may be interesting.

Basically I will probably never look at the site and never get this cool product and will probably lose out on millions of dollars thanks to this guy!

Thanks Loser I hope you feel better knowing that your stupid grudge against Aweber just cost me a million dollars!

Oh boy, Our tax dollars at work.

Oh yeah, as far as that IT guy you want to blame, you know what he is probably doing?
What he was told to do,in other words, his job!

In reality he probably couldn't give a poop about what you looked at.

Right - you are working a job for which you are being paid. ...and you don't have much to do. Tough life...and so unfair that you can't do everything you want online while at work.

Sounds like a few budget cuts to the military might not be such a bad idea - combine some jobs so workers actually have something to do.

a few budget cuts for the military?

It might work better for the civilians the government hired to work with us. They feel that instead of me doing 10 different tasks a day they can hire 10 civilians for six figures a year and let them all do one task.

Then everybody can hate the military for needing money to supports wars.
I get it, I pay taxes too.

I think that's the part that got some a little riled.
As you know with the current economic situation people tend to get a little edgy when you talk about sitting around all day downloading videos
You may not of meant it this way but it did sound a little like bragging.

She's watching videos now, but at the drop of hat could be in a war zone carrying some-one's son or daughter on her back. And if you consider that those in the military are on call 24 hrs a day, the arithmetic shows that they get paid well under minimum wage.

Her post would be braggadocios for most other occupations - but you have to give those in the military some slack for sure

            Thanks, I'm glad you understand...
I actually just recently came back from afghanistan and worked 12 hours a day every day for 7 months straight while I was there, so I make sure I embrace the few breaks I get. Maybe I should've just watched youtube and not even written this post LOL

and yes San Diego is great. I'm from Oakland, Ca so I'm not too far from home.

You have to cut us a little slack... normally we're not so edgy. But during this time of year many of us are hit with a barrage of political ads or political arguments on facebook - and we're ready to pounce! - They don't call it the Warrior Forum for nothing

Yea I'm sure. I get that too being in the military as soon as we even voice our political opinion we are burned at the stake by the rest of the world so I completely understand.

Persoanlly I would think your best line of action would be to start posting more, not less. The more you post the more people will get a feel of how you actually get your message across and then will be able to tell better if your serious or not.

              Actually I was being sarcastic...
I'm not gonna stop posting just because someone doesn't like what I said.

I know the IT guy doesn't have power over blocking websites it's way above their paygrade. I used the term IT guy because IT pretty much goes hand in hand with computers.

    I was joking!

I honestly don't care and I'm not seriously thinking I lost out on a million dollars.

I didn't realize having a sense of humor and sarcasm was banned here, sorry guys I thought I picked the right thread to just be random... guess not.

Don't see banned anywhere near your name, so whats your gripe? If in fact you were trying to be funny, you failed miserably, and like a bad comedian are trying to blame your audience and not your jokes?

If you actually had posted more than twice in 3 years you might have actually had some personality for us to base our opinion of you on.

Calm down Warriors! lol sheesh! - She said she was in the military, and I know from experience that it's a hurry up and wait kind of a job. You're rarely in a position to initiate your own work when you're in the military - It's basically a do what you're told type of job. Don't jump on the lady, she's doing what every military person would do when stuck in the "waiting" part of a hurry up and wait job.

That being said, if you're on a military base, then the networks there may be set up to prevent any data from leaving their network. Filling out an aweber form sends out data, and may be why it's being blocked.

Sorry about your million dollars though. I'm sure free chow makes up for it right?

Wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't in Southern California lol
Even the homeless people here are a lot richer than homeless people anywhere else.

I ended my military career there in San Diego... I loved it there. Probably my favorite place in the U.S. as far as weather goes. That is one place where you could be comfortable living outside. But the base I lived on had free mid-night rations for everyone that wanted them - so at least I got "some" free chow.

Actually no I wasn't trying to be funny as in comedian funny.
I was just pointing out how the government feels downloading free music is okay but signing up for an ezine is bad for the computers.

and the joking was me blaming him for losing out on a million dollars.

I didn't think that people would be angry at my post and if I had, then I wouldn't have posted it. Again, I'm sorry and I'll just go back to not posting. Didn't mean to offend you.

When I was in high school, they blocked the words dead, suicide, among other things (including death).. We had multiple projects where we had to research "X Name's Death" etc...

And we'd get a page telling us that the results were unsavoury, or something to that effect.... yet, you could use Bing images for just about anything... hillarious.

One point: I know this was a joke, but signing up for newsletters doesn't seem that great at work - I understand listening to music, but doing your biz doesn't make sense.

I have a feeling that its not the Aweber page being blocked, it's the outward submission of information (But that could just be the crazy side of me).

Schools in my area have steadily been adding blocks based upon strings that websites produce, for example "proxy patterns", and they screw up a bunch of times every day.

Jpolk74 - From a former Navy guy to a current service member, thank you for your service. It's not an easy life, even though there are many moments with nothing to do.

Having said that, I can't really blame others for not getting your joke. I didn't get it either until you explained it. Hard to know when someone is joking when it's a subtle joke and we don't know you to have anything to go on.

Having said that, don't be discouraged that your post caused a mini-ruckus -- keep posting. You'll find most of the folks here are friendly and pretty good people, including the folks that didn't seem so at first.

As for the Aweber links getting blocked, it's probably because they are usually disquised redirects or couched in JavaScript. It's not uncommon, or unwise, for those kind of links to be blocked in a controlled environment.

I don't think it really offended anyone. It's more like what Gary said. Many of us are on edge because of all the political bullshit we're subjected to this time of year.
When I first started going on the Internet, it was when I was the office manager for a carpet installation company.
Everyone else including the owner installed while I sat in an office and except for an hour in the morning had nothing to do but answer the phone on occasion for the rest of my 9 hour day.

Don't be scared off, just chalk it up to a bad day in the OT and have fun with it.

^This, and this exactly. 9 times out of 10 it's role based blocking. Most structured companies use something along the lines of a BlueCoat, Fortigate, Barracuda or other web filtering appliance.

Generally your levels will be separated, so the general IT won't be controlling any sort of security or filtering. A Security Working Group will control this.

If you look at my original response, which highlighted 2 statements in what I took as a serious post, you are right. I came after you.

I don't think there is a single war we have any business being in right now,but at the same time if you have served in another country,I will both praise and support you. But toi me the post looked like you were bragging that you have spent 10 years collecting money for sitting on your ass and watching video and crap.

And then you blamed an military IT guy which my nephew was, also who served the same place you did,and I know whatever he did it was because he was ordered to.

So yeah, mou may have meant it as funny/humorous,but it didn't seem that way to me.
I took it as a serious post and responded as such.

Then since neither of us that responded at first saw it as being what you said you meant, you basically jumped our crap.

Oh,and here is something that always makes us raise our awareness, when someone has been a member for several years and has a very low post number. I'm not even going into the reasons why, butt posting down here in OT does not raise your post count, but if we get to know you we will get your back if needed in the future.

We actually ARE the BEST down here.

I know how it looks for someone that has been around for several years having a low post number. This isn't my first forum, I was actually very active in a different forum and once I found this one I never really paid attention to it. Then I went to afghanistan for a year and forgot all about this site. I just so happened to read an old ebook and came across the site again and realized not only did I have an account but I'd paid for war room access as well.

Again I understand how it works. I was here just to speak and pretty much start interacting with people at this forum.

Your post tone is actually just really angry that's why I replied the way I did.
Maybe I misread you just as you did me..

      Truce?

That's just Kim in general. He's OT's cranky uncle. He means well if you can get past the "get off my lawn!" schtick.

Nice to make your acquaintance, Jasmine.

I'm sorry the first one you came across was our very own KimW a.k.a. grumpy old man. Trust me when I say that once you get to know him, he is actually quite endearing and a good man.

I also want to join in with the others and express my gratitude for all that you sacrifice (even if it is missing out on newsletters) and do to help protect our country. I salute you.

LOL I actually just realized his "cranky old man" moniker...
Okay that makes me feel a little better knowing it isn't just me.

          Thanks
I'm sure he is. I see now that he was being overprotective because it seems as if I was insulting the job of someone he loves and honestly I might have done the same thing.

No truce is really needed.I'm not angry, and I hope you aren't either. I've even tried to make several post handing over the olive branch.

I think I've made 2 posts that I consider aggressive, but not angry. I rarely get angry at anything.Life is too short for anger. If you knew my history you might understand that more.

Most posts after those two were, mostly trying to explain why you got the reaction you did,and not just from me.

One last critique if I may though? I pretty much find emoticons silly for the most part, but have found online that a lot of times they are needed because events like what happened here have a tendency to occur. A stupid grin or something would have let at east myself, see that you were trying to be anything other than serious.

Trust me, I both respect the military and love our country. And as others appreciate the service you have given us.

I could keep going but then I could talk an hour about the youtube videos I've been watching during this whole discourse.

I decided I was going to end this post with one of two.
The choices were between Sly and The family Stone and the song in my sig, or this one, which is what won out.
    Have a great day!

Edit: Damn these people that post while I am responding.
Oh wait, they said something nice, nevermind, carry on....

    Jasmine,

There are actually companies that are PAID to block you! The military probably uses them ALSO. I think they probably have a screen someone selects areas to block.

I was in the Army in 2006, I wish we just sat around. We had one of those very die hard First Sergeant's, so any days we had any off time at all, he would call around different yard pools to see if there was any work that needed to be done while the other platoons got to rest.

You'll lose out to a million dollars though? I'm not sure how excluding you from signing up to newsletters prevents you from making $1 million.

    Hey Jasmine,

By the way, I think if you ever encounter such problems again - here's a way which I guess would work. So maybe, you don't have to necessarily lose out on a million dollars thanks to the IT guy .

Simply goto sites like hidemyass.com , proxy.org or just google for Surf Anonymously or Proxy Servers and you 'll get lots of proxy sites. You can simply goto these proxy sites and type in the address of the site you want to goto (or which is blocked for any reason). So what happens is the proxy server, which could be located anywhere in the world, visits that site and forwards that to you. So you don't really need to worry about blocked sites in your location .

For example, if the aweber sign up form was located at whatever.com, you'd simply goto hidemyass.com, type in whatever.com and click Surf Anonymously - and voila - your page would load .

    Hope this helps ..

And if it does, I would certainly like a commission off the million dollars that you do make
