Obie the Dachshund weighed 77 lbs when he started his diet... (he's down to a svelte 71 now...)

He looks like Jabba the Pup!

They let it happen to their kids and their own bodies - why wouldn't they do it to their dog?

Hey, that's life. We can't change EVERY individual's actions globally no matter how 'oh dear that's dreadful' we feel. This is The Off Topic Forum to chill out after a hard day exchanging views and asides on the main forum - and we don't need to feel down even further after a hard days work. Loosen up. Think funny or 'chill out' on this forum.

This is sad. What did they feed it, Mcdonalds?

"Obie is averaging a weight loss of two pounds a week, and will soon add a workout regimen."

This sort of reasoning is very common amongst humans nowadays:

Eat as much as you like, then exercise to lose weight.

    Then he:

    1) Loses weight
    2) Gets tired of exercise.
    3) Gets fat again.

The problem isn't sedentary life, it's overeating. I barely move nowadays and
I'm skinny. The secret? I don't eat much and I rarely eat sweets and food that
    contains white flour.

Yeah - I was thinking they must have a "Happy Puppy Meal" now...

That is just gross. Whether it happens to a human or an animal, that is just wrong. The poor thing won't live that long if that weight does not get reduced.

That do probably shouldn't weigh more than 20 lbs., possibly less. I've never seen a little dog that big before. That poor thing will probably need surgery to get rid of excess skin if it ever gets down to a normal weight.

      I'd rather die happy.

The problem is that "good tasting" food doesn't make you happy. It's just a drug like any others. You think it makes you feel good or relax you, but in fact it's only the fact that you're reducing the anxiety of the cravings.
Like smoking cigarettes, smokers say that it relaxes them, that they feel nervous without their cigarette, but in fact it's just the withdrawal symptoms, the craving that makes them anxious and the nicotine they inhale calms down this craving by fulfilling it. For the sugary/greasy food it's the same principle.
In theory we just need food as a fuel for the body, but the good tasting part is what make us overeating, ie. eating more fuel than we need to function, so the body stores it in fat cells since it is not needed for normal function, especially with sedentary life..

The dog is the same, it will eat good food, but if you give him lot of plain tasting food, it will hardly become fat with it, will not overeat, except if eating out of boredom.. :-)

That's just cruel. Probably over-compensating for never bothering to walk the poor thing by feeding it lots of rubbish. I have a neighbour doing the same thing with a lovely natured labrador x. NEVER gets walked, over-fed and obese. Poor thing.
