Parrot Awarded for Yelling About Choking Baby

DENVER (AP) -- A parrot that alerted his owner about a baby who was choking was recognized as a hero by the Red Cross. Willie the parrot was given the Animal Lifesaver Award during the ''Breakfast of Champions'' event attended by Gov. Bill Ritter and Mayor John Hickenlooper.

Willie received the award Friday for his actions in November, when he and owner Megan Howard were baby-sitting a toddler. Willie repeatedly yelled ''Mama, baby'' when Howard went to the bathroom and the toddler started to choke on her breakfast.

Howard saved the baby by performing the Heimlich maneuver but she said Willie ''is the real hero.''

If you're not studying to be a vet or a zookeeper or something I think you're totally missing your calling.

I couldn't be a vet. Euthanising animals-no way. And the sight of blood makes my stomach feel icky.

Zookeeper, that would be fun, but there's no zoo around here.

I may get a lot of land in the country one day and get raccoons, deer, turkey, goats, sheep, peacocks, parrots, sulcata tortoises, and whatever else I think of. Oh and maybe Star can catch me a mountain lion or coyote. I want them too. And a bear.

Edit- Now I'm mad at you Dave Patterson Where's those raccoons you had for me??? You didn't deliver

I'm waiting for a dog who can do compressions. Now that would be a life-saver...

Sure, I can catch you a mountain lion, Valerie. I'll be sure not to shoot it in the head so you can have it mounted...

We give animals so little credit. They are actually able to do more than we assume.

I read a recent article about a chimpanzee in a zoo who gathered rocks together in a pile. Then he threw them at zoo visitors when they stopped to look at him. The zoo people said that he developed reasoning skills, that he learned how to plan.

Makes me wonder why they are so amazed. Animals plan things all the time, especially chimps. In the wild they have been known to encircle am unfortunate spider monkey and attack it, not for fun or sport but for food! They have organized, planned hunting skills as a group. Lions, too. Nothing unusual about that.

Animals are smarter than most people think. They just don't reveal it all the time.

I watched some show long ago about pets that saved lives. There was a baby in it's crib and the mother in the other room. The baby stopped breathing and that cat acted crazy. It kept running to the mom and acted crazy and running to the baby's room. So the mom went to the baby's room, saw the baby was not breathing and was able to give cpr and save it.

Then there was the dog who was trained to dial 911. His owner had some problem and the dog dialed 911.

What a great story. Hey Valerie - do you want some chickens? They're great pets, come sit on your lap and provide you with food. Course you'll have to convince my daughter to give one up but it's yours!

LOL You won't be the food just offer a good steak and put some tranquilizers in the steak then when it falls asleep load it in your car. Since it's a long drive get some more steak with tranquilizers. And try to catch me a male and female so I can breed them and have baby mountain lions.

Yeah, tranquilize the steak. I might as well just stick the needle in my LEG!

You make it sound so easy, why don't you go out and grab yourself one, eh? Oh, and be sure to set a video camera on a tripod so whoever finds what's left of you can upload it to youtube!

Right, I haven't tried it. I have too much sense! One of my dogs tried...once...took a lot of bandages to patch the poor guy up, so I don't think I'll look for trouble from one of those, thanks. I think they look better running around free than being kept in someone's house, anyway.
