What movie made you cry the most?

I remember watching this movie as a teenager (the one below this post). I was alone in the house on a Saturday afternoon and remember turning the TV on and it had just started.

I didn't know anything of the story behind it or anything at all but just became completely engrossed in it. I don't mind admitting at the end I was pretty upset and I completely balled my eyes out, but don't tell anyone.

I've never watched anything that affected me like that, before or after. I've seen it on youtube since and it's still sad even though I know the ending.

So my question is and has probably been asked before but what movie, if any has made you cry the most?

One of my papers in college was on violence in television, and the effect it had on preschool children, and I remember a study from the 60's that was done on what were termed back then 'troubled kids' - kids who were prone to violence, or bullies, or would just shut down...in the study they found that gun play and violent scenes were absorbed more easily because they were used to seeing it. The kind of violence that was really upsetting to these children were movies like "Old Yeller", and the TV show Lassie, which dealt with the loss of a loved pet, or in the case of Lassie, a pet that was in danger - in some cases the kids would have extreme anxiety between the episode where Lassie was in danger and when she was OK again.

For instance, when I was little, The Wizard of OZ scared the CRAP out of me - A mean old Witch with Flying Monkeys trying to kill your dog? No WAY! :p

Even today, while cycling...I find myself humming the Miss Gulch tune

Yeah, now that you mention it. I remember watching Lassie as a wee lad. They had a three-part show titled Lassie's Odyssey I think. Lassie somehow gets lost far, far from home. The family, Timmy, ma, pa and gramps) are all fretting and sad for three shows.

Each episode shows the family as well as what Lassie'd doing as she tries to get home. In the third one Lassie's been gone so long they finally throw in the towel. In the final scene Timmy has taken all Lassie's toys and stuff out to their special spot under their special tree to bury it all.

Just as he's putting the stuff in the hole you see Lassie way off in the background running toward lil' Timmy. Man, I was nearly hysterical watching that crying my head off (not even caring it's not cool for boys to cry). [he writes as the tears well up just thinking about it]

Kay, I truly wish it was a joke. Worst casting job in history. Oh, and Reacher is a cop in the movie. And, no, not a military cop.

Here's a link to the preview. Don't watch it if you don't want your day ruined:

Oh, and a note to any authors who might be reading this post: If I like your books, any movies made based on them will be awful. Sorry, that's just how things seem to work. I'm looking at you, Lee child and John Sandford.

          Well, yes it was!

In my eyes, if a movie can move me to the point of tears whether they be tears of sorrow or happy tears, it is an excellent movie. It hit the emotional triggers just as the writers, producers, actors/actresses, etc. intended it to.

If the movie takes me on a roller coaster ride between tears of sorrow and happy tears, even better.

The Fighting Sullivans (1944) FULL MOVIE - YouTube[/url]
The Fighting Sullivans (Good Movie - watch it if you haven't seen it) was based on a true story Looking Back...The True Story of the Fighting Sullivans — James Kennedy Public Library which changed the way families went to war, and why they had to go looking for Private Ryan -

I had to think of some that have also had that impact on me...not that I was crying my eyes out, but they were touching, or disturbing - they tend to be documentaries, like "The Stoning of Soraya M." - but others based on true stories which had impact were "Hotel Rwanda" and "Schindler's List", because the drama and heartache are based on man's inhumanity to man, and indomitable spirit.

I've probably been tempered over the years though...I used to have a girlfriend that cried when Pee Wee Herman had his bike stolen :p

I think the fact that it's a true story maybe what made it worse for me and yes it is a superb movie, not only sad but inspirational. I can't think of any other time I've cried at any movie other than this one. I was welling up inside watching ET as a kid but didn't let go and the same with The Champ.

It's not the done thing to cry in my family although I do remember crying when JR got shot in Dallas.

I still am baffled that it hit me that way. It's not like I was emotionally invested in that story, so something is very wrong with me and I should call an ambulance or check in with the mental health authorities ASAP. Anyway, I wasn't familiar with Sixto Rodrguez and his music either until I learned about him in the news. I do feel I missed out on something. His albums are really great and would have been a great addition to the songs of my teenage years.

My favorite movie of all time still brings a tear to my eyes "Love Affair" Annette Benning &Warren Beatty. I still find touching at the end, when he finds out she is paralyzed, and says "if anything had to happen to one of us, why did it have to be you..." real tear jerker for me.

It's interesting to see how people react differently to certain movies. I guess it all depends on your life experiences for me, instead of general sadness that is not related to you. I have my own personal issues growing up that I am not comfortable sharing. Some movies I can relate to the characters and it saddens me.

So with that said, I will list the following

"I am Sam" - The saddest movie I have ever seen in my life. I remember many men in the theater were sniffing the whole time. I will never watch that movie again. I have only seen it once. Do not watch it!

        "Powder"

"Stanley and Iris" - Not only the film, but the music sucks you in and paralyzes you to completely letting your guard down when watching.

"Bridges of Madison County" - I know, call me a sucker. But that door handle scene gets me every time.

There might be more but those are off the top of my head.

EDIT BY MODERATOR: Why does your location say "Chicago" when your IP is in Romania?
I'm staying in Romania for a while but I'm from Chicago, is there a problem?

"Finding Nemo". Wasn't that a movie with great moral.
It may sound funny to you but I really love cartoons and animated movies. Innocence can be found mostly there.

The Green Mile! The big, muscular guy made me cry when he cried in the film. I can't handle grown, big men that's crying. I don't know why :p

  • Just recently - "In The Land Of Blood and Honey"...
(spoiler alert) I admit, this is a very complicated situation, (and I have met and like people from both sides - and they were reluctant to explain - why I don't know)

but there is is a scene of 'the cleansing'. where the sister of the key woman comes home to find out , her baby has been tossed out a 4th story window, because she was crying too loud...and pissed off one of the soldiers - the horror of her realizing what had happened - going down and finding her child on the ground 4 stories down, and the thought of what drives someone to be that inhumane, was too much for me - I lost it. I just could not reconcile that any more...(and I don't know why...)

If someone can explain to me why Bosnians hate Serbians, or visa-versa, so much. I wish you could tell me...I need to understand the hatred...
