Google's homepage back in 1998 http://s10.postimage.org/6xj9c16bd/google1998.jpg

Check out the quote "index contains 25 million pages", some keywords have more indexed pages than that now!

Boy have those Stanford college kids come a long way..

Anyone here remember when the internet was just a novelty? I remember saying to a boss back in 2001 that he'd want to get online as most of his business would be done that way within a decade, and he laughed at me....and said "the internet is for kids who have nothing better to do"....bet he doesn't think that way now.....

Yea..I remember getting my first computer in 89, a C-64. All the rage was telnet. Then I got a pc compatible in 1992 then started using prodigy and netscape. When Google came out in 98, I told a few people about using it instead of Yahoo or AOL for search.. and they were like "what?". No one really knew G then. Most only knew of AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve, WebCrawler, and Netscape...back in the days.

          Wow..time flies!

A lot of my family got their first computer in 98' -parents, aunts, cousins. All of them many years older than myself, my real challenge recently as someone younger and more "in the know" was convincing all of them to trash those junkheaps for newer models. Took awhile. Stubborn family.

Ahh, the days when people used to use Yahoo as the search engine of choice!

The strange thing is that with most things you don't notice it until you look way back and then think "How did that happen?"

Haha. I remember when I thought AOL WAS the Internet. My mind was boggled when I went over to a friends house and they had a different service (I think it was Errols Internet or something like that.) It's funny how times change.

Yeah, I remember using Google back in highschool in the late 90's. I used to use Google, thought it was great, and wondered why everyone else wasn't using it.

Now I remember that exclamation point at the end of their logo. I'm not sure when they got rid of that!

I remember when we first got internet at home. It was soooo slow!

I was so frustrated with it and said it was a complete waste of time.

I coudn't figure out why anyone one would want to sit in front of a computer for 5-10 minutes waiting for the damn page to load, when you could just open up an encyclopedia and get the information you wanted, or go to the library and find it quicker. Or even call up someeone and ask them.

lol, and I didn't think it would get faster.

    Wow, was I wrong.

I was in grad school (MBA) when this was taken and I remember a fellow student that thought google would take over the world. Everyone laughed at him as MS was king and killing everyone. Who is laughing now. Just amazing what you can do with an OK idea and a lot of hard work. Its not about creating the next big thing but doing something better than anyone else is doing it.

Back in 2001 I hadn't heard of google.

Was my first year in highschool and my librarian told me to do a google search (with us all sitting at the computer).

I had no idea what she meant.

It was soon evident that google was the best of the search engines out there.

Haha, these screenshots bring back memories

My first computer was a chisel and a stone tablet

I started designing websites in 1996... when there were 3..count 'em...3 websites on web design. One was the Harvard website style guide. I actually learned a great deal just by looking at the source code of sites I liked.

I actually bought Netscape navigator. It came with a giant book on how to use it - plus some internet resources. I had no idea you could download it. Of course, back then, that would've taken ages on my 2400 baud modem.
