Lou, just how bad is it? My daughter lives in Brooklyn and I live inland NJ away
      from the water thank goodness.

Right now, things here are calm. A little wind and very little rain. But that's what
scares me. I know the worst is coming.

Anyway, stay safe and I'll say a prayer for you and all the folks out there.

That thing is a hurricane wrapped in a nor'easter - bad news.

If you are anywhere near the water (like within a couple miles) or near canals or inlets - make sure you've got an attic or something high. The storm surge could be horrendous and that's the most dangerous part in hurricanes.

Hold on tight - and good luck.

If you think it's bad now, wait until the dirty side hits.

Category 1 hurricane and the entire NE seaboard shuts down

Granted people lose their minds here in Houston when it snows at all, we're expected to work through anything less than a category 3. Guess it's just what you're used to that makes all the difference.

My heart and prayers go out to you all on the east coast.

Heck, I live in Michigan and we're getting 45 mile an hour winds with a couple of power blips. They're predicting snow for the next three days (not more than an inch accumulation) I can't imagine what you all are having to endure.

    Hello,
Last year for Hurricane Irene it was expected to hit the lower part of New York,
instead upstate New York got hit the worst.
I think New Jersey is going to get it really bad and some parts of Long Island will be sunk.

It is too late to evacuate now, and even though it sounds corny, "HUNKER DOWN".

My son was at the store late this afternoon and said there were almost no loaves of bread left on the shelf. Since the trajectory moved, we are going to be around a hundred miles closer to that darn storm, but so far, our power is on and we just have wind, rain and cold...but it hasn't gotten anywhere near as close as it's going to, so we will see what happens later.

Prayers for all who are really getting hit with Sandy. We have family about right in its path as it moves inland, so I hope we hear from them after it moves on.

Canada had it's share of damage from this storm. It was freaking scary here last night. I'm surrounded by huge trees and you should have heard the wind howling...took me a while to get to sleep last night - I think I finally did around 3:30 am

Apart from my internet and digital phone service being down for several hours today, we were quite lucky here in Niagara. Toronto had worse winds, and more damage in some places - one woman was killed from being hit by falling debris (road sign!)

The storm has moved to the Lake Huron area, and right now the bad weather is in Sarnia, Ontario. It looks pretty nasty.

The New England states seemed to have had the worst flooding and storm damage, and my heart goes out to everyone affected .

Why is it that it takes a natural disaster to bring out the best in most people, though? Why can't people be kind and compassionate to each other all the time, not just when disaster strikes?

The casualty numbers have been going up and I always wonder what facts there to base $$$ estimates on but there always seem to be estimates.

Lou- Glad you're OK. Looking at the Jersey Shore was like our coast after Katrina. Just be careful as gas leaks and loose power lines will be a danger in areas where power is just coming back online.

Looking at the damage online has been hard, I can't imagine having to see the pain on people's faces in real life. The story about the mother losing her two little boys got me. I can't imagine the horror and heartache she feels.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by the hurricane. I pray for you repeatedly throughout the day - for the last few days, not that doing that somehow makes everyone ok, but I just want you to know that you are not alone.

At first I was hopeful that the death toll would be pretty small, but it keeps rising. I know it's not a lot as compared to Katrina or other storms, but the loss is still devastating.

Wendy - Don't panic. After Katrina there were no calls possible here. Cell towers and land lines are down and areas without power can't charge a phone either. I know you're worried - hope you hear from her soon.

It was almost 3 weeks here on the coast before you could get cell phones to work after Katrina - and many weeks more before land lines were restored. For months the service was unreliable on many days.

In my town in Bergen County New Jersey, we didn't get hit too hard. But my town only has one open gas station and we are on the border of New York and New Jersey. The line of cars for that gas station can be anywhere from 75 to 200 cars at one point. Luckily, they aren't gouging prices.

Good luck to everyone out there on the east coast that got effected by Sandy. I consider myself extremely lucky after only three trees fell.
