Sweet!!!! :p

Just scroll down to watch the video, (had to edit the original link as it went to the version with the stupidly loud ad at the start).

Interesting. I wonder how long before we try to colonize it? I can just hear the "people" there calling those that see our ships coming "conspiracy theorists".

Probably the next thing to determine is if there is a magnetic field around the planet.

Without the protection of a magnetic field the solar winds blows the planets atmosphere away.

      Reference: Mars.

Why would we want to do that, so we can go to war with each other on two planets?

      I'm only half joking.

I only took it as half of one

No, it's 7 times bigger, plenty of room to trash the planet, or have a large scale war!!!

Unless of course intelligent life is already there, then we can have a war with them?

Interesting thing about light speed is the closer we can get materials to Photons of light mass, the faster we can get to 300,000 kms a second?

So, Avatar's, 30% light speed may not be that far fetched if a large part of the ship is made of ultra strong and ridiculously light materials?

Probably a lot more advanced there as well . . .

Arrrr, they did say that its rotation is similar to ours, so it should have a magnetic field.

We might be able to see what the atmosphere is composed of, (a tall order, considering the distance), but in 2017-20 when a probe goes up that can see this and other planets atmospheres, then we will find the slam dunk ones!

After 2020, l suspect that we will start listing the nearest Earth type, or class M, planets nearest to us, then see which ones have unnatural chemicals in their atmosphere, or which ones have intelligent life, etc.

In the next 20 years or so, we should be able to get concrete proof that aliens exist!

Or next month if the Mayans, got it right!!!!

Even if you travelled at the speed of light, it would take you 42 years to get there.

Even that speed is still too slow.

So how light does a ship have to be to travel at light speed..... wait what?

It would be awesome if scientists discovered a speed faster than light.

Well the Avatar ship, which was about 3 aircraft carriers, in weight, in reality couldn't reach 30% light speed, as it would have to be almost 100% efficiency, in pouring out the antimatter balls of plutonium, or l think the physicist on another website said it would have to churn out 1800, balls a second to reach 30% LS.

Or almost 1000 per second on each side of the ship. Which even with magnetic fields, etc is pushing it?

It would make more sense to have a large part of the ship, made out of ultralight materials, to reduce the energy to mass issue, or materials that could convert speed or inertia into less mass?

Probably building a large part of the ship out of Impossibletanium, (Arrrrggg) would make the ship light, as that materials is weightless at room temps; So James Cameron, did do his homework before making that movie!!!

That's the thing about new inventions, loopholes or shortcuts may be discovered?

The faster than light seems promising in Janeva, but they are still trying to confirm it!

      Shane

PS But it would still take almost 100 years to get there, or 20-30 years for the people on the ship.

More likely we will find an Earth type planet or moon around a larger body that is much closer, and visit that first!!!

          Worm holes.
Hmmmm, Yeah, a scientist recently said, it would take the combined energy of all the stars or suns in our galaxy for one year, and aim it at a single point to create a wormhole!!!

But l have also heard about one or two people going through a timewarp near the Bermuda Triangle in a light plane and seeing a tunnel, etc when strong lightening was present.

The credible experience, which allowed him to get to his destination much faster than usual and had all the indications of a warp taking place, according to present scientific knowledge shouldn't be possible?

According to present knowledge the energy required would be astronomical, 1 with 10 zeros, or something like that!

So, clearly there are big gaps in our understanding on space and time, so there could be a shortcut in Physics, yet undiscovered!!!

And a number of scientists have also said that it is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light.

Just as geometry is beyond the understanding of a dog or cat, I'm sure there are plenty of concepts and principles in the universe that are beyond the understanding of humans.

Yep, Stephen Hawking, has said that particles getting thrown out of a black hole, would travel faster than light!

So, the Star Trek idea of using a suns gravity to give us the extra push, could work!
