We Need A Little Christmas! And other Christmas songs...

I know some may think it is a little early for Christmas songs, but some radio stations have been playing them since the beginning of this month. And that is what actually brings me to starting this thread.

I was in the car with my son and this song came on the radio. He gets an epiphany and shouts, OMG! Whoever made this song must have been prophetic because somehow they knew how you were going to be when you were older and made this song based on you!

Haha!

Back story, Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I love to do it up for the obvious reasons but also because December 26th was my mom's birthday. She always made Christmas such a magical and wonderful time for us and I like to do the same. At Christmas, I always celebrate my mom's life too and all of the family shares fond memories of her. It's like she is still with us during the Holiday Season.

So I was wondering if there was a Christmas song that just exudes the essence of you and why.

        Terra,

        The definitive Christmas song...

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlmdo_0nBiA

When we were kids, my Mom would play that one over and over while we decorated the tree every year. It's still my personal favorite.

For the past few years, I've somehow managed to hear that while out shopping and gotten strange looks (and the occasional approving grin or nod) from passersby. Turns out I can't hear that without unconsciously singing along. And not quietly, it seems.

I'm not shy about singing in public, but I usually know I'm doing it.

        Hey Terra,

        That's my point, too.

It's only 4 days. You don't have much longer to wait.

Don't be the Thanksgiving Grinch. Let's give Thanksgiving the respect it deserves and stuff ourselves while watching football! Then we can move on to Christmas.

PS. Those Christmas lights need to be taken down no later than Jan. 2!

          Me a Thanksgiving Grinch?

          Banish that thought!

          Just for you my friend.

The song that reminds me of my childhood Christmases and my mom the most is this one. She was a huge Snoopy fan and sang it all through the season.

Did I mention she never sang a song in tune in her whole life?

I started our Christmas Spirit today. I took our youngest (she's 8) to do Christmas shopping for.... OTHER kids.

Yep, we went Toys for Tots shopping!

Eight seems to be the magical age (as I've learned with our older children) where they are capable of thinking beyond their own wants. Plus, I feel it's a good lesson in life to pick out 20 presents that SHE would like to have...and give them away. She was shocked to hear that there were kids right in her area that would wake up Christmas morning with NO presents at all...and now, she knows there are 20 kids that WILL get a gift this Christmas.

Know what she said when she was done counting the toys as she put them in the Toys for Tots box one-by-one?

"Only 20??!?! Wow, I get a LOT more than 20 presents for Christmas - we need to go buy more toys for them!!"

        That's what I'm talking about!!

I am so guilty of Christmas turning into one more "to do" on my list - this helped us all start off the season in the right frame of mind.

Wanna get in the Christmas spirit? Do something amazing for someone else.

And for too many kids - a little $15 toy is AMAZING.

Just a FYI: Toys for Tots didn't have enough toys to go around last year - and this year might turn out the same. There is plenty of time to help out if you're so inclined. And hey, take your kids with you

That is a bit early, I agree.

However on the other hand, in the world today with so many things spiraling out of control, so many people being out of work and their families and children suffering from it, with the news reporting that unemployment increases the risk of a heart attack by 30%, well, who am I to begrudge them a bit of joy, cheer and good will?

If Christmas music helps lift that burden and stress and brings them a bit of joy in a world that seems otherwise dark and cruel, then God Bless 'Em!

If a person doesn't like it personally, they don't have to listen, but they shouldn't complain that others do.

And on the other hand, many people suffer great depression during the Holidays, particularly those who have lost loved ones and are alone. And you can't always escape Christmas music, unless you stay home and never turn on the TV or radio.

I believe before we look to Christmas, we should eat turkey, watch football, and fall asleep during the game in our Lazyboys with the remote control in our laps, just like the Pilgrims wanted!

But as a solutions orientated person, I'm offering a compromise. We can celebrate Christmas when Terra wants on the following condition:

Jan. 6 through Feb. 6, we celebrate K, K and K day! Kim, Kevin Riley and me (Kurt) all share the same birthday, Feb. 6. I believe this is worthy of a month-long celebration, as well as gifts for us.

Someone want to second this? (Kim?)

            Splorf!

I can't watch football on Thanksgiving because I'm busy cooking, then entertaining and then cleaning up. I like the falling asleep in the chair part though.

Oh, and Terra only celebrates Christmas on December 25th but she doesn't save all of her love for just Christmas Day.

So I'm sure she could send some love to Kurt, Kevin and Kim the whole month of January and February.

I love Christmas too. Just having a difficult time getting into any holiday spirit.

    I'm a bit of a grinch.

When I saw the neighbors putting up lights, the Christmas tree and decorations, I thought WTH?

I'll get there. It helps to have a kid because I certainly want to make sure each Christmas he has is special. There will come a time where he no longer lives at home and I'll miss him dearly.

Merry Thanksgiving and Happy Christmas Terra. : )

    Terra,
My favorite part of Christmas is the music. Well, maybe the food...no wait...it's really the music Especially the old carols.

Your mom sounds like she was a wonderful person who truly had the Christmas spirit. I understand the mixed joy of having a near Christmas birthday -- mine is Dec. 22nd.

I feel the same way about my mom, too, MissTerraK. My mother WAS Christmas. All of the Christmas songs bring her to mind, but especially the Hallelujah Chorus. She used to practice for her annual Christmas cantata in our car. She would have us all singing to the tops of our lungs.

Honestly I don't really care that much for Christmas. It's become a cheap commercialized event where everyone gets together to see how much slave made in China garbage they can purchase. Sorry that's just my outlook on it.

I'm so sorry to hear that, but I firmly believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

I have also learned in this life that you can see the ugly side of things, or you can see the beauty that lies therein, the choice is yours.

If you search for beauty, you shall find it, if you search for ugly, you will find it too. It just depends on your focus and attitude. Positive vs. negative.

I wish you a very merry Christmas anyway!

As an adult this song does make me see Christmas as a special time of year.

Another one I can appreciate as an adult is this one. I can't listen to it without shedding a tear. It certainly helps us to forgo the selfish tendencies that seem to rule a major portion of our lives more times than we'd like to admit and put the focus on others.

Football QB Tim Tebow was voted as the guest more people would like to have for Thanksgiving dinner than any other, beating by a wide margin President Obama, Lady Gaga and Big Bird.

And...football has been a Thanskgiving tradition since the 1880s, when Yale and Harvard first played a Thanksgiving day game.

      Happy Thanksgiving Kurt!

And to all of my fellow Warrior friends!

      Kurt
Thank you for the history lesson regarding Thanksgiving and football.

I too have a bit of history for you. The very first Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with Santa Claus at the end of the parade ushering in the Christmas Season.

Detroit, Michigan and New York, New York followed suit four years later. After that, it took off with many major and minor cities across the nation holding Thanksgiving Day Parades all of which feature Santa Claus as the main attraction and grand finale, so to speak.

So in honor of that tradition...

Now please excuse me while I get back to cooking.

My Son played his first two live solos with the WLT group at church, Christmas Eve 2008. Packed house and the crowd gave them a standing ovation! We gave him a New Rocktron amp that year and he had that baby COOKIN! Think about it most every time I hear these tunes

My favorite is also Christmas Eve/Sarajevo.

As for songs with vocals, I love this one.

OKAY -- NOW! Heya Yeah - it's CHRISTMAS SEASON.

BIG ROB - - I had the pleasure of seeing the Transiberian Orchestra Christmas concerts two years running. First and last concerts I ever went formally dressed to. They were more incredible live than you can ever imagine. Beautifully done lasers. I had a front row seat the second year. Anyone who ever gets a chance to see them in concert needs to go - you will be astounded, awestruck even.

And which carol always does me the most Christmas cheer - from the old time carols, not the new stuff?

          In essence, yes.

However, Christmas can also be a celebration of friends and family and the spirit of giving for many. Personally, I don't consider Santa, elves and reindeer with red noses to be about religion.

          Exactly what Kurt said!

Take "the spirit of giving" for instance. It is a time when many get together and focus on those that are less fortunate then themselves and reach out across the world to help in so many different ways.

Here is an excellent example of just that...

Unfortunately, many people forget about those less fortunate themselves as they go about their daily lives. However, at Christmas their focus turns and they give lovingly. Whether they give because they are "religious" or not doesn't really matter to those in need, I believe.

Yep, sorry, but l have gone down to shopping centres for countless years, and eventhough some carols over the speakers are nice, some make me cringe, or want to get out of there asap.

Obviously, hearing the pony one near sharp knives isn't a good combination.

I suppose it is hard to take in, when the economy is crumbling, and it is obvious, (especially at this time of year) that more and more people are doing it hard!

Like for example the "Turtle Doves, etc" one, is a song l would do a runner for! And yet another artist trying to sing a carol, and unfortunately stuffing it up! You know, instead of singing a straight note, it is all over the place, or having a rapper join in, (big mistake, most of the time).

Although apart from some supermarkets, it has been pretty conservative! So l figure they have done their surveys, and dumped the truly annoying ones!!!

Here is one l like...... Wouldn't mind hearing that one, in shopping centres!

Bless you John! 1000 fold even!

Thanks for the offer of help, but I don't think there is anything you could do.

My daughter and her family from Minnesota both started their new jobs today, we got them moved in their new home Saturday, but on Friday, daycare for my 4 month old grandson fell through. So I am watching him and there is no sense in sending my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter to daycare if I'm at her house already.

      That was whammy number one.

Whammy number two was with my other daughter with my three other grandchildren. My son-in-law lost his job, so subsequently, the lost their home. My daughter is still working but most of her pay goes to the temporary housing they are in now which is not very good conditions. If that wasn't bad enough, the storage unit they had practically everything they owned in burnt to the ground.

But good news! I just found out today that several who want to remain anonymous have come forward and are paying first and last months rent and security deposit for a new home and they will be moving in exactly one week before Christmas. These people, whoever they are, are also buying all new furniture and Christmas presents for their whole family.

My daughter was notified today while at work through my two granddaughter's school. Oh, and my son-in-law was offered a job as well and will start tomorrow as a parts manager at an auto parts place.

      We are so blessed!

So unless you want to baby sit, Hahahaha! I guess you can't help. But thanks again!!

To post a video you paste the Youtube video URL which appears in the browser address bar. For example:

      Code:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTx-sdR6Yzk
I have wrapped code tags around it otherwise the video would show and not the URL.

That's what I had been doing for the most part...but for some reason, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't...it worked fine for me in another post, but would not post this one...

I think I have the answer.

The code has to be in this format as I have shown previously:
          Code:
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTx-sdR6Yzk
The format you tried in your post will not work. There is a subtle difference in the URL format:
          Code:
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTx-sdR6Yzk&feature=youtu.be
You need to strip out the URL from and including the "&", ie: &feature=youtu.be

LOL! That is what I tried telling him above, but you obviously did it much more effectively than I did.

Just another reason why I dislike being a techie tart!

I don't know whether to laugh or be upset.

My daughter just told me that this song is what she imagines me as when I'm a very old lady.

LOL! Okay, I'm guess I'm gonna laugh.

It wasn't that...(you little 'techie tart' you :p) It was that I was using the url and the share links, and for some reason it still didn't work...hence my confusion  - it works fine on most, and a few links for some reason just came up as links, and not videos...
              Oh, well ... c'est la da(guerre)otype -
