'Open Water' = Creeped out by this (?)

You know it is like a bad dream that I just can't shake.

I saw it late last night and I just have had the creeps all day every time I realize how hideous what happened was.

hope i don't ruin the end for anyone who hasn't seen it yet (2003 yes i know i need to get a life - it hit cable reruns- 2012)

But here is what - stranded in the middle of the ocean - literally up the big creek without a paddle - the whole drama - and then the last survivor watches her husband die -

and still bobbing along.

... but then when her fate is eminent and the sharks start swimming around her, she takes off her gear and dives in.

Better dead (drowning) than awake when you are about to be the Soup du Jour.

Man, the worst part was watching her husband's body float away - I wonder which part was worse for her.

  • Holy crap I thought I was alone in this. I saw that movie back in 2005 I think and it totally freaked me out. It was one of those movies that had me worry for days. I never could watch it again.

    I can basically handle any horror movie

    Psycho
    Texas Chainsaw
    Exorcist

    Could not handle Open Water for some odd reason.

      You know I always say the daily news is some of the most horrific stuff in the world - and horror stories are RAMPANT -

    Who knew with a title like that? I was enchanted by the ocean and water and color - No idea THE LEVEL OF HORROR and it being REALISTIC - unlike most horror movies, which I think most are stupid or too gory and I just flip the switch on DAT.

    ... and without being your usual smarmy love story with gross explicitness of late, it was really apparent the love they had for each other - and I felt so sorry for the guy, especially because he was such a cute little man, and here he was, he not only couldn't protect his love, but he was the first to fall prey.

    just bone crushing to the HEART. Hella way to break up!

    (the only real horror movies i do confess i like are psychological thrillers - as long as they keep the gore and sex discreet i am good).

    ... and I am totally addicted to hidden object games online - and they are all horror themes - "scary" and "dark" etc - and except a few that have given me the chills with special effects, i just LAUGH at most HORROR.

  • I was actually thinking of seeing it it is available on Netflix.

    I used to watch every horror movie I could but like you said,now life itself can be horrific enough.

      i hope it was about the imbeciles that finally went searching or how they dealt with realizing their stupidity cost 2 people their lives?

      I mean the 2 stars are dead and resting in pieces.

      how can they come back and do 2?

      ...unless it's like Jonah and the Whale or whatever it was about the guy that lived in the belly of the whale?

  • I don't watch water movies. Can't handle them. At all. I think if that one was set on land with a simalr plot it wouldn't bother me much at all, but set on water....forget it.

    • The power of the ocean is ominous - terrifyingly so -(and part of that is sheer mass) - is that what bothers you about it?

      That environment/atmosphere is really (I never realized before) a very, very effective wallpaper or back drop for sheer horror. (in our lifetime people are probably thinking tsunami - yeah terrifying alright - but sudden - and devastating) --

      ... this went on for 24 hours bobbing up and down in the middle of nowhere. Waving at every ship or plane and not being seen by a long-shot. just waiting for somebody to find you just in time.

      Although I really don't like how I feel after seeing this movie, the ocean is one of the most attractive things on earth to me. The sound, the smell, the colors, the whole 'nine yards' is just supremely attractive.

      I do admit 'hero worship' of things that are just so all powerful - you would think my addled brain would equate danger+power but noooo, it's all good because it is aquamarine and smells nice.

  • @ kenmichaels - Yes I did know (vaguely) that it was a true story (hadn't read anything about it) -

    ... and of course since they were never found nobody actually knows what happened other than they are gone. So the writers did an excellent job of creating extreme tension and fear. *

    I think the fact it is true is one element that lends itself to HORROR more than some robot dressed as a monster -

    @ thomas - thanks i read your Wiki link - and got a whole new set of chills up and down my spine. It's uncanny how much the actors looked like the real people.


    * it was definitely noteworthy that part of the horror was that you are expecting all along at any minute for someone to rescue them - even just the last one standing - and it is somewhat unbelievable there is no 'happy ending' - you just have to live with the way it was - double fatal.
