haha great question.

Well depends in which context:

1 on 1 "street" fight no weapons = bjj is best (EDIT: if no biting, nut kicking etc)
single martial art knowledge for a cage fight = bjj is best (or wrestling) (as proven in the early UFCs)
most effective ground fighting system = bjj is best
martial art for great party tricks = bjj is best
etc...

I have trained in BJJ and it's a great system if you are on the ground in a tournament.
It's is not so great in a real street fight. Reason being you will never fight one on one
these days. People will pull knives or guns before you can blink an eye and usually have
their friend close by if they fight in any club, party, etc. If you
are on the ground you put yourself in danger of being killed faster than if you
were standing trading blows.

I've had some b jiujitsu training, along with some kali, and most all of the b jiujitsu trainers and students say, "Even though fights start standing up, almost 100% of them end up on the ground, so you need to know how to fight on the ground."...(or something to that effect)

I agree, however, I've had fights on the street and I don't believe that a person should seek to take a fight to the ground, just because they're trained in b jiujitsu.

It can be very useful, but alot of its success depends on the person. I don't believe that 1 martial art is the absolute, most effective over other martial arts. The level of the person applying the art is really what makes the art most effective.

For example, I personally know a world champion muay thai fighter (he passed away earlier this year), who was very good. Take someone like him against an average b jiujitsu fighter and who wins?

Some may say the b jiujitsu guy because his art is more effective than muay tai. I don't agree. There are some fighters with punching speed, great take down defenses, without a lick of b jiujitsu training. they can prevent the jiujitsu guy from taking them down.

And jiujitsu guy can end up on the ground, except not by choice...by uppercut.

My point is that success largely depends on who's working the martial art. If you're going to learn jiujitsu, then you need to also learn some sort of stand up. Now that's when you really become deadly.

Of course, the best thing to do is avoid those situations that lead to violence, but be prepared, in case you're in one.

Just my opinion.

  The best 'martial art' = MMA. Proven through the UFC.
  
  Best survival 'martial art' would be something like Krav Maga.
  
  All you gotta do is punch and kick the nuts (and other vital points) and thats how you survive.
  
  I would never preach to someone that BJJ is the be all and end all.

  I got blue June 2011, hopefully I will become worthy of purple sometime in 2013.
  
  I am only on yellow in Judo but have been training regular for about 2 years. Yellow should only take a few months in Judo but due to work commitments I have not been able to schedule gradings.
  
  I really enjoy both arts, if I had to chose one, it would be real difficult.

I am just a one-stripe white belt. I have less than a year experience. Just competed in my first tournament on Sunday. I live in Korea.

A lot of people at my gym are reluctant to participate in tournaments. They told me to be careful and to tap right away.

But during my match, I lasted the whole five minutes, and didn't tap. Futhermore, the guy I fought came in 2nd place out of 35 competitors. He should have won the whole thing.

The point is that I left my comfort zone, and surpassed my expectations! I held my own against a great competitor.

I hope this encourages more people at my gym to compete, and more people on this thread to compete if you are thinking about it....just do it!

If you lose, so what? You've never lost in bjj before? Of course you have. That's one of the reasons I love BJJ, it makes you humble. If you think you are good, just spar with a higher belt than you! And remember back to your beginning days when you got your ass kicked all the time.

That's why BJJ people are so humble and easy to talk to for the most part!

hey rolough,

You went full 5 minutes without being subbed by the eventual silver medalist out of 35 competitors. Well done mate it sounds like you did very well.

Competing is great, just you and him on the mat, both want victory and all your friends and the spectators watching. helps you learn to remain calm when adrenaline starts to pump, certainly get the butterflies going in my stomach!

Yeah competing at least once is a very great idea. But it is hard work - to become successful at it anyway haha

BJJ is great, but maybe not the most practical.

A few of my old high school pals are very much into BJJ (and are now brown/black belt level), and I've watched hours of instruction. (I'm an oldschool guy, and like Royce & Rorion tutorials from the 90s).

But remember, if your opponent has friends (and you must assume they do), they're going to kick you in the face.

So, unless you can omoplata your opponent in less than 5 seconds, don't goto the ground in a streetfight.

Yeah man I'm still training! I am consistent with my training. Congrats on your purple belt man! Did they whip you at your gym? Dont know if EVERY club does that haha.

Hello! This will be my 7th year training BJJ. I've never trained Krav Maga or Hapkido but know about them. I've several friends that have trained both and I've done my own research on them. Krav Maga is highly effective for life or death stuff. Hence the use of it with the Israeli military.

Hey Razul, good to hear you're still at it! No stripes on my purple yet. (no rush either!).

My category was u64kg Master 3 as I am 41 yrs. I would never survive in the adult category!

I don't know of any BJJ gyms in Paris sorry :-(

I took Modern Arnis. The sticks are not necessary...nice to have, but not necessary. For me, I think it's the best because there's so little strength involved. I'm small (and aging) so I need something quick and simple.

As pointed out in post #19, though, you can't go wrong with a ccp either.

I'm at the peak of my game. Admittedly it takes me longer to get the head scarf off and occasionally I trip over it but all in all, so long as I take my morning pills, I can stand one legged on a chair for up to 4 seconds.
