Self-Employed And Filling Out Applications

Ok so I have been self-employed for a while now and now trying to get hired part time somewhere else for a little while. My question is, on the application it asks how much did you make when you started your previous job and how much did you make when you left. Since I am sole proprietor all the money went to me aside from what I took out for taxes. Some days I will bring home up to $300 a day. I am currently filling out an application for a pizza parlor cashier and pizza maker position. Should I leave it blank, I mean, I don't want them to think that I make too much doing what I do. Right now my line of work is slow because of the holidays and really need the money. How should I fill out this application?

Employer: Self Employed
Address: (I put my home address since I work from home)
Dates Employed: 01/2011-Current
Position Held: Owner
Supervisor's Name: ?????? I left this blank since I own the company.
Phone Number: (I put my own number)
Starting Salary: .....for now I left this one blank
Final Salary:......left blank
May we contact this employer: yes/no....I think it would be stupid to even answer this question.
Responsibilities: The box is so small for this I can only write about 3 words.
Reason For leaving: I have not left this position just taking a break since its slow, but I have not written anything yet for this yet.

Please help me out. Thank You

  • Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt.

    I explain in the interview that I have good weeks in my business followed by no-income weeks and I want to add a little income stability right now.

    Look at it from their standpoint, they are getting a better employee than the rate justifies but there is a decent reason for it.

    I think the fact your making more money on your own than a cashier position will make a difference If the job is full-time or temporary employment.

    Full time, chances are after the first few paychecks when you compare your cashier paycheck to your own business income, you'll want to leave.

    If it's a temp. job (holidays) the employer probably won't care what your earning outside of their business since it's only a temp. job.

    • I will attempt to keep this job as long as possible. My business is off and on. Hadn't made not 1 dime in 3 months because of the holidays. It happens. I started the business to have the possibility of making extra from home.
