Sad. What A Waste of Life

It is tragic when a nurse would take her life because of a prank. She was a nurse and a mother of two. That's just royal insanity. I guess when "God Save the Queen" is part of their anthem and heard thousands of times in the course of one's life, it might seem as if gods and goddesses were defiled rather than a prank on mere human beings born into privilege.

I am not justifying the joke, but I have to wonder how stable she was to take her life over this? Especially being the mother of two.

She couldn't have been very stable. Or maybe an absurd notion of the "Royal highnesses'" importance was essentially hypnotized deep into her brain after hearing people sing "God Save the Queen" thousands of times in the course of her life.

I formally announce that if I meet any person in the royal family I will NOT bow down to them. I do not want my ancestors' (American side) fighting to free themselves from such nonsense to have been in vain.

I don't get this at all. She committed suicide because she thought the Queen's life was in danger...or out of the humiliation of being the victim of a prank?

I agree about singing "God Save the Queen," but I don't think reciting the Pledge of Allegiance every day, as is the practice in U.S. schools, is any different.

We don't know how stable or unstable she was or her mindset or whether the events are related.

However, for someone serious about their job the ridicule from such a prank could be traumatic. For all we know it may have endangered her job, too.

What's sad is that people think this prank is funny...it's so second grade.

Kay, it's giving it too much credit to even call it a prank.

But what should have been, at most, a footnote at the end of a news report was instead turned into the lead story by the major TV channels and was plastered over the front pages of national newspapers - leaving aside all the online publicity generated. It's not hard to see how this receptionist might have thought the whole world was laughing at her - if that indeed was a contributing factor in what has since happened.

Her death is, of course, tragic. But what's truly pathetic is the media's obsession with, and much of the public's appetite for, mindless drivel masquerading as news.

I don't think the said nurse would have been able to hold down a job is she had been unstable to any degree. One would have thought that somebody who worked in a hospital would have been well informed to seek advice concerning depression or mental health, where needed.

Just a horrible event all round. I feel sorry for the nurse's family, hospital, Royal family and the unfortunate DJ's who were involved in the prank. RIP.

I heard a recording of the prank call and this is the only part that the nurse who committed suicide played. I cannot believe that this is the only reason for committing suicide.

Apparently the Palace didn't make any fuss over the "prank". Even Prince Charles, the grandfather to be, made a joke about it. I think the nurse in question may have been building up to this outcome, and a feeling of guilt may have pushed her over the edge.

                  A very sad story indeed.

The "pranksters" have been taken off the air by their station, and one of its biggest advertisers (Coles, a national mega-chain of supermarkets) have pulled all their advertising from the station.

There's also been a huge negative backlash against the duo on social media. So much so, that both of them have deleted their Twitter accounts.

I don't understand why she committed suicide? Is there really an event in life that can justify someone committing suicide? I don't think so. Even though this prank was completely unjustified, one must question the choices of someone who could voluntarily take their own life, especially with young children to raise.

You've obviously never encountered anyone suffering from depression or similar mental health problems.

It now appears that the "prank" broke the rules of prank calls:

...., I hear that the call breaks the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Commercial Radio code of practice ( September 2011) which states:

"A licensee must not broadcast the words of an identifiable person unless:
    a) That person has been informed in advance or a reasonable person would be aware that the words may be broadcast
    b) In the case of words which have been recorded without the knowledge of that person, that person has subsequently, but prior to the broadcast, expressed consent to the broadcast of their words."

It's clear that the two DJs involved have broken the rules.

This is the problem with live prank calls, and should be well understood by all broadcasters - you can't put the call to air unless you have permission from the person being pranked.

In addition to #14, the radio station in question is already on a "good behaviour bond" because of another pair of their "stars".
