Forum rules clarification - Thanks

I don't know if me bringing this up here is going to be a problem. But, I have to ask about this topic, so that in the future, I will know what to post and where.

Here's my issue:

I did a search for recommended books for Internet Marketers and I came across one that I liked. I guess the problem was that the thread was old... 2011; because when I posted a question about if anyone else can post a recent list, it turned out that my post got deleted.

Now, my question is, should I have just started a new thread about this topic? And this is not just pertaining to this one particular thread. I meant the question, in general, for future reference.

One of the last things that I want, is to be banned from this cool forum, because of some rule that I am unaware of.

In line with the above question, I wanted to start a mastermind group through here, but a previous thread of mine on this, was deleted as well.
So, does that mean that I can't start another thread about the topic? I really couldn't understand what I did in that thread that was so out of line. It's not like I started a flame war or anything.

I'd really appreciate the feedback, without being chastised for my ignorance.

    Hi affmemo,

In general, bumping an old thread isn't a good idea. Aside from the fact that some of the information could be outdated, it's a technique that's commonly used by sig file spammers who conduct a forum-wide search on specific topics they're looking to promote. Of course, I'm not suggesting that you had that motive.

I didn't see your particular thread, but I know that the subject of recommended IM books comes up on a regular basis. It's possible you posted in a thread that arrived on the coat tails of a spate of similar threads and yours was considered one too many. Or it could be that someone saw the original date and decided it didn't warrant a bump. Whatever the reason, you shouldn't overly concern yourself.

My guess is that your mastermind thread was deleted for being in the wrong section. There's a dedicated area for that purpose here:

I deleted that one. It was just the bumping of an old thread that was the problem, not the content itself.

You are VERY unlikely to be banned for benign content like that. You might get a temp ban if you're persistent about bumping threads that are a year or more old, but that's different from adding a relevant post to a single old thread.

We usually close old threads that get bumped for a pretty simple reason: They tend to take over the front page and move more current conversations down into the archives, leaving people needing answers to more immediate issues unhelped.

First of all, thanks fellas for informing me on the guidelines here. I'll keep them in mind.

But, as a follow-up, I am left with some unanswered from these posts.

      1. If when I search and I see a topic that I would like some further information about, but it happens to be over a year old, how do I start another one?

      2. The mastermind group that I was referring to, was in the section that Frank mentioned below. The problem that I was having, is that I was not getting enough responses to warrant starting the group.

btw: This is for a 'ebusiness brainstorming group' for members who live near Manhattan, New York. ( I wouldn't have started the thread, if I didn't see interest here for one. )

So, my question here is, how do I properly go about asking folks if they are interested in joining?

      Hey, Paul.

Apparently, you're the guy that I have to dot my i's and cross my t's with.

And yeah, what you mentioned below makes sense. - I'm not a spammer; I just couldn't figure out another sensible way to keep interest in my topic of interest.

If you can enlighten me on how to go about this, I'd appreciate it. ( Mind you, I try to keep my posts relevant.)

Bumping into Old threads does push the new threads down in the order, which shouldn't happen. Closing the old threads is the best idea. Constantly posting on Old threads will definitely result in getting banned.

Stupid question, but this doesn't affect the "all in one" threads, RIGHT?

ALSO, I gues this means that if we have to discuss something that was discussed before, we must open up a new thread. Kind of ironic.

Of course, I am generally NOT one to do this, even if I have added to threads so bumped. I tend to go pat the first screen only if I am looking for something. Usually, I am just curious here.

At the top of the main page in each section is a button labeled "New Thread." Use that. Give it a useful title, so folks know what it's about, and the ones with knowledge or interest can participate and everyone else can skip on to things that are relevant to them.

If the topic has been discussed previously, you may want to mention that you've looked at the earlier threads (and link to them) and explain what you're looking for that wasn't in those.

Make it as easy as possible for the people who have what you need to find you and help you out.
