Is the number of viewers on each forum remotely accurate?

So the main forum of this site is listed as having about 7000 viewers right now. Is some funny method used to come up with that number?

    No, but it's calculated periodically, and covers the number of visitors over the past [some stretch of time]. It's somewhere between an hour and 4 hours. Not really sure how long.

    Doing it on a real-time basis would add too much to the server load for no useful purpose.

    Such things often assume that a person that had inaction for only 20-30 minutes is still a visitor. Also, a person with no cookie may count, and lead to duplicate counts. So it wouldn't be accurate anyway,
