Where Is The Christmas Spirit?

I was walking my Bulldog Caesar last night and it struck me that there appears to be far fewer Xmas decorations up in my subdivision than previous years.

To give you an idea, in my street there are 18 houses and only 6 have bothered with decor this year. I wonder how much of it can be attributed to the poor economy?
What about where you live, notice any difference from previous years?

    Hmmm,

The only difference in my neighborhood regarding outdoor Christmas Decorations is that we didn't put the free standing decorations out in the yard but still did the house up.

But the neighbors made up for it as they all seemed to add more, lol!

    So I guess it's a wash?

People aren't spending money at all. Go into town and whereas years ago it would be packed solid at this time of the year, shopping bags full...

Now there are far less people with hardly anyone carrying much in the way of gifts in their shopping bags except for the bare essentials.

Hell, it was on the news the other day on BBC Radio2 how more and more people in the United Kingdom are now sleeping in their cars in mid winter at their place of work because they cannot afford the daily commute back and forth anymore from home.

Yes it really is that bad in the UK now. The money squeeze just seems to be getting tighter and tighter with no let up in the foreseeable future.

Another large well respected national chain store went to wall this week - Comet.

HMV will probably be the next one to go.

Loads of nationally known household company names have gone the same way in the last few years and the future, it's not looking any brighter anytime soon.

A good indication? All the pubs in town (47 in one mile, pretty much every one looks as dead as a doornail when you look through the window on driving past, hardly any customers at all - in other words empty).

Christmas is simply becoming an event people cannot afford any more. It's been played up on TV so much turning it into a colossal marketing / spending feast each year, more and more people seem to be getting less and less interested by it all and refuse to get taken in by all the razzmatazz surrounding it.

I've seen more Christmas spirit in people I know - without all the razzmatazz. We've turned the holiday into a mega-shopping spree and made it a chore. Anyone with common sense and limited income has cut back and I don't that's a bad thing.

My friends are doing more at home, cutting back on big gifts, skipping Christmas vacations and putting up less light displays to keep the electric bill down.

I know many families who are leaving behind fancy gifts in favor of donating gifts to families who have nothing. To me, that's getting back to the spirit of Christmas.

I think it depends on the area you're in. I've seen plenty of great decorations near me. Didn't seem like any less than usual.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

The Christmas Spirit is greater than it's ever been before in my family.

Of course it never has been about all the razzmatazz. It's been about celebrating the greatest gifts of all...life, love, and family togetherness with good food, and conversations including memories of yesterday and current goings on that will make memories of yesterday for Christmas's to come. We have family that travels hundreds of miles to be with the rest of family. Sometimes, we only get to see them once a year and what a wonderful gift that is for us.

Christmas was never supposed to be about the economy, so our Christmas Spirit shouldn't be measured by it, I believe.

Love, laughter and family fills our homes and our hearts. Perhaps our Christmas Spirit is larger this year because our family is.

I've often wondered what it must be like to have a Christmas with your family all around you. I've never had this myself in all my life, so I wouldn't know.

This isn't to say I can't appreciate how wonderful it must be for individuals like you Terra. I hope you have a lovely time. Bet you enjoy a right good time knees up and good on you for doing so.

Sometimes I try to imagine what it must be like, I bet it's fantastic.

          Hmmmm.

Aww, that is soo sad, Mark.

            Chin up!

Ummm, it's never too late to become a part of a family, if you know what I mean. I recall Christmastime romance as being truly the best!

May you be abundantly blessed this Christmas, Mark, with love, with hope, and with a peace that surpasses all understanding!

I don't have much experience of that myself. In fact, I mainly have to watch TV and movies to know how normal people celebrate holidays

I think it is both a sign of the economy and just people's feelings about the future, the horiffic shooting in Newtown seems to have stolen a lot of the celebratory spirit.

Yep, l have a small family group now! My Mother and brother, but it is still a good day!

The rest of my family are either passed away or fallen out in one way or another!

But l should feel fortunate some family's tend to get out the knives in the kitchen this time of year, so thankfully my family isn't nuts!

In AU, the shopping centers are getting more and more full, but the weather could play a part, it is Sunday, and 36 degrees today, so l will be making a bee-line for the air cond, shopping center asap!

And the Xmas lights on houses are down this year, probably because of electricity going up!

almost 6 months ago it was 10%, and soon it will go up another 5%, (or something like that)! And charities are getting more and more people requiring their services, and less and less people are giving!

So the Xmas spirit is getting clobbered, but it is still there!!!:p

Hope everyone has a good one, all the best!!!

  • As a kid, I watched :Miracle on 34th Street - it made me believe (9147) -(the remake) This movie (remake 1997) almost made so cruel and full of malfeasance - it lacks the spirit of the whole concept - and no matter how hard the actors try even they can't fix this movie - (imo) (though I must admit there were parts that would bring a tear to the eye,,,)
In my opinion. it just not does have the Chrhhistmas spirit,,,,,

Yeah, nothing new there, very few remakes hit the mark!

Or they usually destroy the original feel!

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a good example; original version, even though it is B/W, is done very well!

The remake, poor storyline, and stupid ending! If it wasn't for the special effects, it would send most to sleep!

The Omega Man, and the remake, "I an Legend" did a pretty good job!

And The modern remake, of the Planet of The Apes, "dogs breakfast" and Spielberg has lost his touch, is all l can say!

I'd say l experienced the Xmas spirit today!

I got down to the cool air-con, shopping center, and got settled with my paper and coffee, then....

someone two tables up, left, but as a noticed some time later he left his iphone, behind!

I tried to see if he was coming back, etc, but no! And others were noticing the phone, so l knew that it was only a matter of time and it would be nicked, so l told the staff about it!

        Phew!!!

I put it down to Xmas shopping and the heat! So, at least he won't have to stress out Xmas day, about his phone getting nicked! And changing the codes on his Internet Banking, and who knows what else, and can just enjoy the day like the rest of us!

        Anyone been in this situation?

PS at the start of this year, someone at the same coffee shop, was talking to someone and had his mobile phone above him, (not a good idea)!

And next thing some kid walked past and took it, then security was called in, etc. But all they could do, is tell him to go to the police station across the road, and report it!!!

This poor guy did a silly thing, and had to go through all this crap! I watched him frantically looking through the back of the seats just in case!

People tend to get stressed this time of year and forget things, so keep your eyes open!
