First Jack Klugman, and now Charles Durning...

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Charles Durning grew up in poverty, lost five of his nine siblings to disease, barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.
His hard life and wartime trauma provided the basis for a prolific 50-year career as a consummate Oscar-nominated character actor, playing everyone from a Nazi colonel to the pope to Dustin Hoffman's would-be suitor in "Tootsie."
Durning, who died Monday at age 89 in New York, got his start as an usher at a burlesque theater in Buffalo, N.Y. When one of the comedians showed up too drunk to go on, Durning took his place. He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as heard the audience laughing.
But we can always think about the times he made us laugh too...especially when you go at Christmas...

At least he didn't have to go like Waring Hudsucker...
RIP Charles...
and RIP Jack -

  • And talk about perseverance...:rolleyes:
    After the war, still mentally troubled, Mr. Durning “dropped into a void for almost a decade” before deciding to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, he told Parade magazine in 1993. The school dismissed him within a year. “They basically said you have no talent and you couldn’t even buy a dime’s worth of it if it was for sale,” he told The Times in 1997.
    not bad for a guy with Tony, Emmy, and Oscar nominations...

    He'll be buried at Arlington. He was in the first wave to hit the beaches of Normandy;
    He was the only G.I. in his platoon to survive; He received three purple hearts,
    and suffered from PTSD all of his life; A great actor, and war hero. RIP

  • Sometimes it's hard to just say 'Thanks' to people who really deserve it.( Though my father when he talks...saved Britain from the enemy...)

    It's very hard to talk about decorated Heros-
    and I don't think I deserved a medal for doing what I did -(I was just doing my job...)

    Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
    So that blind people can hate them as well.
