Ever been hit by a runaway deer?

A runaway deer hospitalised a woman in my home town of Chelmsford today. On the high street!
This is a pretty rare thing in England but has it happened to any of you?

It's quite common in the part of NY state where I currently live. I've had several collisions with deer over the years. Fortunately, I've never been hurt nor have my cars been totaled but they did result in some nasty dents. Not sure if any of the deer were even killed, as they ran off in each instance.

I consider them the single most dangerous element on the roads around here, even considering icy roads in winter and drunk drivers.

Except you have to watch out for the kangaroos!

This video is a little gruesome as it focuses on a dead kangaroo, so don't watch if you're squeamish.

I live in a rural area in Ohio and deer are always running into the country roads around here. I have had several cross in front of my car and I clipped the back hooves of one last year. Dusk is especially high-risk driving around here especially in heavily wooded areas.

Near Fort Dix, N.J., it is the deer who are being warned.

The sensors are in the side of the road and pick up the headlights as they come down.

Every time a car approaches these posts, lights and whistles scare deer away, from a stretch of road where car-deer collisions were common.
That's a good idea for a solution in areas where it's a common problem.

With all the often useless technology available today, seems like you could utilize sensors and warning noises (or flashing lights) on the utility poles that line so many roads in the country.

If they don't get used to it. Around here deer were a big problem at the airport. They spent a bunch of money installing a cannon (not a real cannon, but some device that simulates the sound). It worked for a couple years, but the deer grew used to it. Now they're back to doing what the did before the cannon, sending out someone to drive the runway and chase them off.

That's when there's someone working. This is a small airport so pilots have to take their chances if no one is on duty.

When I lived in the country long ago my mother in law came to visit. We were coming home from town and a deer was crossing the road about 15 feet from a "deer crossing" sign. She commented on how obedient these critters seemed to be and wondered if the state trained them. Serious.

Goes to show you that sometimes people can't tell what came first. Deer are limited in some ways, and maybe they just felt that was the best place to cross. THAT probably drew someones attention to that, and they put a sign nearby. Of course, the BEST place for a sign is about 100+ feet BEFORE the point they are likely to cross. You have to give the driver enough advanced notice.

The last time I saw deer was about a month ago. they were frolicking about, and I noticed it and slowed down. When they seemed to be out of the street and playing elsewhere, I passed. SO FAR, NO accidents! BTW I don't think there were deer crossing signs there. Of course, half the street was shut down, so the deer probably felt safer than usual.

This is so true! I remember about 30 years ago, our family gathered at the lake for a holiday weekend.

My brother left somewhat earlier than everyone else as he had a college exam early the next morning, and wanted to get back in time to prepare for the exam. It was also about a 3 1/2 hour trip for him.

About an hour and half had passed when the phone rang at the lake - it was the OPP calling to inform us that my brother's vehicle had hit a deer and my brother was on his way to the hospital.

My brother was fine but his vehicle was a right-off. I can remember my Dad asking him "did you hit the deer between the signs?"

"Yes" was his response! Of course, Dad had to remind my brother once again that the deer always cross between the signs.

I DID "hit" a dear awhile back though... with a Dodge Durango, on a road called "big danger", and its because of the amount of deer that they call it that. They are constantly crossing...

Then I stopped, open up the door looked down and he was right under my drivers door staring up at me...just a head and one leg sticking out. I called the cops and while waiting I figured I would put him out of his misery and at least get him out from under my truck so I backed up over him... and believe it or not , he got up and ran off. The cops couldnt find him in the area, so I guess he made it pretty far. I think my truck actually got hurt worse.

Taught me a lesson about driving slower on dark country roads. Frankly I was hoping the cops would let me load him up and take him home sadly, but he was okay. so thats even better.

Ps. Didnt get "hit" by one, but I "hit" one.

We have to watch out for them in my area too. There's loads of woods around here. I've only had one close, very close call, but was lucky not to hit the deer, and that was fine with me. Unfortunately, there are loads of wild critters closeby within a few miles or right around where we live, from bear to coyotes, skunks, snakes, etc. The woods would be so much nicer without a lot of 'em.

The deer mainly hang around to eat your flowers and bushes, but the rest of the dang critters gotta go.

          Haha!

          Perhaps I should rephrase that...

The deer was trying to play tag-you're it with my car and jumped me.

Replay on incident from deers perspective talking to his buddies while
drinking water from the lake later that day:

Well Sam, I was just crossing the road like I do every Monday morning and then out of nowhere some young chick bumped my tail with her car...

Well, you know me... I jumped her and afterwards we smoked a cig. Next she opened a bottle of Asti.
I thought it was round two! Then she chugged it down all by herself!... Well on the bright side, at least she didn't choose to swig a bottle of
            Jägermeister.

I actually had a deer jump out and hit my car.
I was driving down a dark country road about 9:00 PM.
I saw a deer standing on the side of the road so I slowed down to about 10 MPH.
Just as I got to the deer it jumped out onto my car.
It rolled off the hood and put a good size dent in the rear quarter-panel.
I went home and called a buddy of mine who had a pick up truck and was an avid hunter.
I met him back at the deer where we killed it, took it back to his place, hung it up and bled it out.
The next day I went to his house and butchered it and filled our freezers with some very nice venison steaks.

I had a talk with the deer you encountered and now that I know the road and where

Just so you know, I'll be wearing a White T-Shirt with Hooters printed on the front of it.
If by some chance you over shoot and hit more than just my tail. Then, the Asti will be next to
the big tree on the left by the creek.

Either way, I'll still give you a ride hommmmmmme....

Brilliant deduction for the season, Kurt!

But what about the off season? Perhaps the paranoia is incurable after experiencing just one season, but then again, what about the yearlings who haven't yet experienced a hunting season? Maybe it is a learned behavior passed down from generation to generation from the first hunted deer. But wait a minute! Did the first deer hunters wear orange vests? I think not.
