Killer whales trapped as ice hole shrinks in northern Quebec - Killer whales trapped as ice hole shrinks in northern Quebec - Montreal - CBC News

A dozen killer whales trapped in the ice about 30 kilometres off the coast of Inukjuak, Que., could be in imminent danger, as a local Inuk who visited them late Wednesday afternoon said the small patch of open water which the whales are sharing is already shrinking...

The sad part is I'm not really sure what anybody would be able to do to help them..

Okay, no more hot tacos for me before bed time!

When I read the title of this thread I thought it said:
Killer whales trapped as a*s hole shrinks in northern Quebec

My next thought was, SOMEONE SHOULD TELL THE PERSON TO LOOSEN UP A LITTLE!

My third thought after realizing the thread title said ice hole was, maybe I should chill out for a while...lol

    Have a Great Day!
    Michael
PS, (To qualify my first thought above. Earlier today some a*s hole nearly ran me off the road trying
to pass me while I was doing 75MPH in a 65MPH zone with no other traffic around!)

It happens. About 2 months ago, I was almost run off the road by some drunk asshole next to me. I was doing 60 mph in a 55 zone (legal) and he was doing like 70 (illegal) coming up on the left.

He/She misjudged the distance (obviously.. they were trashed..) and tried to merge in to my lane, running me off the road to the shoulder.

If my horn didn't work, I probably wouldn't be typing this right now. On the side of the shoulder is a 9 foot drop in to a ditch.

At that speed, me & my girl would be history. I couldn't slow down because some other douchebag was less than 5 feet behind me, riding my ass.

Anyway, long story short, there were about 5 other drivers who seen what happened. I started honking & telling everyone to get out of the way, because after it happened, the idiot who almost killed us sped up to about 110 mph trying to get away.

I caught up to him/her, called 911 and gave them a description of the truck, the exact location where we were, where they were headed, and the license plate.

I pulled away when a state trooper finally picked up the call & got behind them. I followed them until they did, relaying every turn they made to dispatch. I wasn't about to let that drunk POS get away with nearly killing us, or possibly harming anybody else.

Just got to be happy that we're alive.

As for the whales, eh.. I still can't think of anything that could help them

The whales were TRAPPED? Could someone cut a hole in the ice?

lol Steve, I think they are trapped in a specific area, not like trapped under the ice.

Like they have nowhere to swim towards because its ice in all directions, 360 degrees around them.

Otherwise I'd say of course, it just takes some brave souls with some chainsaws, some rope, and possibly some fish to feed them while they work

A SPECIFIC area in the ICE! I wasn't saying to get them out, but to give them time to search, etc...

Whales ARE mammals, so it is hard to believe they got trapped in so much ice. I mean it takes a while to form.

This is dishearthening I feel for those whales, maybe there will be any other way to help save them, where are the brilliant scientists when you need them.

You see 12 whales dying, I see millions of fish below them on the food chain surviving.

They can do what has been done in other places - they can make a series of holes widely spaced that lead to open water to allow the whales breathing room as they swim under the ice.

It can be done if there are people willing to do the work.

Please do not 'release balloons' for celebrations. The balloons and trailing ribbons entangle birds and kill wildlife and livestock that think the balloons are food.

        exactly.

toward the bottom of this article Canadians rush to save 11 trapped killer whales - CNN.com it mentions a guy named ray lee, president of kasco marine, who was involved in a similar situation in 1988 where 3 gray whales were trapped in alaska (was made into a movie in 2012 called "big miracle"). it was in large part due to his pumps that 2 of the 3 whales were saved.

            Yaaaaaaaaaay!!!

I can hear of people in trouble or danger and think "that's too bad".

When I hear of pets or wildlife in crisis it hurts my heart. That's just me.

Yeah, for some reason I just really like most wildlife, but whales I seem to like more. The dolphin, and porpoise, are considered whales also.

IMAGINE being in an environment that is so hostile though. They have to stay under the water but ALSO often come up for air. YIKES!

So the whales are free after the ice sheet shifted.

                That's nice.

I just feel sorry for the polar bear that went to have a look at what was going on.

                He was shot dead.
