Old Music thats new to me.

Hearing this song today, tagging and discovering it, gave me some food for thought.
(Translation: flipped the ADHD switch on...) Lemme 'splain..

After a little research , found out this song made it as high as # 3 on the charts in 1976. I was 12 years old.
Up until today I had never heard this song. I was so locked in to my music choices at the time, I didn't even hear this song even if it did play on the radio.
If it wasn't Billy Joel,Springsteen, Zeppelin ,Van Halen , the Who, Aerosmith or Peter Frampton, I did not listen. And that was just the 12 year old me.
It is quite possible that WPLJ did not play Starbuck, but I am sure WABC did.

sidebar: Did the group "Starbuck" have anything to do with the coffee?

Point of all this?

There is just a Sh**-Tonne of good music made in my time that I have yet to hear.

When I hear a song that some how was off my radar when it was first released,
I consider it a gift.

Check it. The muse that triggered this tangent:

  • The old-school music is the best to hear, to be quite honest. No bullshit lyrics, no retarded people singing, just people talking about life.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • Shut up, Rob! Are you kidding me?

Man, you were missing the best of the best then!

No Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jim Croce, Jethro Tull, ZZ Top, ELO, Deep Purple, Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, T.Rex, Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Traffic, Gary Glitter, The Rolling Stones, BTO, REO Speedwagon, The Eagles, ELO, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Black Sabbath, Three Dog Night, The Doors, The Kinks, David Bowie, The Beatles, Golden Earring, Steve Miller Band, Elton John, Queen or The Hollies? Just to mention to mention a few, LOL!

Whoa! I'm perplexed! The seventies turned out the best music ever!

    • Ha!

Just curious as to if you found some more old/new music in that there compilation of mine. :p

      Terra
  • Man, you've mssed a lot! Why not tell us what kind of music you like and the rest of us will try to post oldies we think you'll like that you might not have heard. Great way to discover some "new" old music, I'd guess. The collective music intelligence in the OT is quite impressive.

    • Whoa! Pbhththttttt! Easy Horsies! WhOA!

Of course, Terra. All those and more! I was just referring to the 12 year old me.
The beatles, doors and stones were on the 8 year old me's radar.
I'm talking 3 45s' that got almost completely worn.(bonus points if you can guess the three songs )

And Mr. G, the unfamiliar are few and far between, that was why I took such great delight in discovering Starbuck today.

Okay Dennis, 1976 is covered. Surprise me with 1977.
The 13 year old me,hmm. Ted Nugent, Boston, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the rest of the groups from my 12 year old self.
Work with that my friend, and I'll check your suggestions, and see if there is some new ones on me.
      • [1] reply
  • Rob,
try to stay up on the different music threads in OT and you will hear a lot you've never heard before I bet, especially from that time.
I have posted Starbuck's song several times in the past.
I'll be more than happy to step up to the challenge too.
  • I don't think I EVER heard of this group before, but I HAVE heard this song sung THIS way(It MUST have been this group). I forget the story behind starbucks name BUT, as I recall, it had nothing to do with this song.

But if I want to listen to every song I considered decent when I was a kid, it would take a LONG time. a LONG time. So I won't even try.

    Steve
  • @terra nope ,nope and nope.
    try again.
    @ Kim. Hit Me !
    @Steve. cool song,right?
    how about that xylophone solo?
    And the Coffee connection?

    • Lol! I told you it was a stab in the dark. Hmmm, getting them all right could take some time, but I at least want to get one right.

      How about

      Beatles ~ Hey Jude

      Doors ~ Break On Through

      Stones ~ Satisfaction (I can't get no)

      Terra
    • It's ok. I guess some of the licks, the kind of sliding melody, etc... Kind of make it.

I checked out the lyrics. They are pretty specific. It is like a guy went to baltimore and met a lady that graduated in 1974 from missisippi, had a great night, and started a group to write a song about it! His car was a convertible! BTW it was #3 in 1976, which is probably why I heard it.

ARS- check ( gonna have us,a champagne jam)

Al Stewart- check, although that is the only song I know of his.

Boz Scaggs- Now, that is New to me

Thanks for the coffee buzz! And that song is new to me.
And it does not qualify this round , not from the '70s'

We are not men, we are DEVO! that phase came much later, along with suicidal tendencies, the dead kennedys, talking heads, ramones.

And I think Jagger said that just so he wouldn't have to hear the question.
We are not devo, we are the bloody Stones!

    • I know all of these. As did the 12 year old me.
      Like you said "frampton"

Dude, Come on. Of course I know Joe Walsh. and the James gang.sheesh

And Y'all are missing the point of the OP.

A randomly heard song which I dug. Tagged it and found out it was from '76.

The TWELVE YEAR OLD ME did not give a good rats ass about any of the artists but the ones I listed. Therefore, did not pay attention to the other stuff.

OF COURSE my interests expanded as I grew.

As I said in the OP , " When I hear a song that was off my radar when it was first released, I consider it a gift"

You want some more. I could probably rustle up hundreds for ya.
  • Oh yeah, almost forgot....
    @ Miss Terra- The Beatles
Hints for the last 2. One started with "I", The other started with "You".
No helping from the rest of the class...

@ Daniel -Far out,Man. not the right time period, but cool and trippy none the less.
  • At that time frame music was still regional for the most part. What I eard in Virginia may not be the same as what you heard wherever you were.
Now I don't know if it was regional or another reason, but Boz Scags was new to you,but dude, almost every song on that albums was a major hit where I was from. You couldn't get away from Boz at the time. Obviously this is moe recent than the 70s,but he can still knock it out of the park. How many bands can you say sound this good live nowadays?
Boz Scaggs - Breakdown Dead Ahead - YouTube
More 70s? How about this? Ever heard Nils before? This is early 70s so might definitely be out of your listening range.Even if it is, I think you might like it

This band opened for many headliners in the timeframe of the mid 70s,but never got the attention they deserved.

I posted several songs to show the diversity of their music.

    • Oh-Ho!, Alfred E.!
Pete Way came later in my listening, but Man, he is freaking awesome.
Saw UFO in '78, Fastway and Waysted in the '80s'. Thanks for jostling my noggin. Thin Lizzy! Phil Lynot! Never saw 'em live, but Live and Dangerous was in heavy rotation on my turntable for sure!

Yup, Boz is still kickin ass. Just to clarify, I have heard of him , just never listened to him.
Nils Lofgren, yup I know the name. First Time I heard Grin. before I dug, First thought was" this sounds like Little Stevie from E street". HA!
Wow. Those Dudes are talented. I hear alot of the Bigs in their music.
      Queen,Beatles,Yes,Rush,Zep and so forth.
      They must be awesome live!

Blackfoot- Part of the Southern Rock Royalty. I could talk for hours bout them
Again, they came a Little bit later in my listening.

Redbone- Thats cool and funky! Dudes went with the Indian theme!

Spirit- Sound Very familiar, No wiki on them,( you should start one,Dennis.)
You Tubed them, Man those dudes had talent.

  • I'd say Dennis picked the Best Spirit album to listen to. The Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus is great all the way through.
    For the wiki ,go here.
They were an interesting band, with a Stepfather and son both playing in it.
Their first major song was I Got A Line On You.
Jay Ferguson went off solo and had a minor? hit with Thunder Island.

The Redbone song I think I heard first was Come And Get Your Love.
  • @ Kurt- I have heard of Tommy Bolin from his Deep Purple days. First I heard his solo stuff.

@ Steve- The xylophone solo, that's what thrilled me. You just don't hear that many on rock albums.

@ Dennis- Hmm. You sure thats not Ricky Medlocke; off to investigate...
  • Got to say I made the same assumption as Rob about Blackfoot.Had to listen to it to know otherwise.
As far as Redbone,I'm surprised you didn't post this one Dennis.

    • Now , I do recognize that song
  • Yup, Dennis. One and the same. Heres the Wiki
    • [1] reply
    • I've seen that page, Rob. I've also seen sites saying they are two different bands. What I do know is you won't find that song listed on any Blackfoot albums on that Wiki page, nor is the song listed anywhere on the official Blackfoot site. Are you seeing something I missed?

Sidenot:, I had a heck of a time finding that song because I had only heard it once back in 1970 or so, and I thought the DJ said it was "Bombed Out" rather than "Bummed Out."

Are familiar with Savoy Brown, Tens Years After, or Wishbone Ash?
      • [2] replies
  • Not sure if this one counts as 'old' but it's a few years ago (2006)

Only just yesterday got round to playing it and can't take the
damn thing off It's in MTV style 'heavy rotation'

    Ed Sheeren (self titled)

    Bloody good stuff!

    Steve
  • Rob,
Tommy Bolin was also with (for a short time) The James Gang. I saw them while he was with them. Weird show, had Tim Buckley on the same bill.

One of my favorite artists from that time you probably at least know his 80s work, but Here is a song that got me interested in him. Ok, the clip is really three songs but all good. From his first solo album,Sneaking Sally Through the Alley

Robert Palmer - Sailing Shoes, Hey Julia, Sneakin' Sally Thru The Alley Vinyl Cut - YouTube
    Edit:
I just realized I met both Tim Buckley and Robert Palmer. Didn't have the luck to Meet Tommy Bolin, All three of these performers died way too young.
    • [1] reply
    • Kim, I saw Power Station in the 80s'. Luckily, They did a bunch of Robert Palmer songs, too. I always thought the dude was class, all the way.

      Edit: Who is Tim buckley?

Here is a song that has been recorded by numerous people and bands, but I bet you've never heard a version like this.

  • Kim, that was the first Spooky Tooth album I bought, might have been the only one, I'd have to check the boxes in the basement. Since Rob liked the Wishbone Ash, Dust, and Budgie songs I played, I'm trying to use those as a guide.

I've heard of the Bonzo Dog Band, but never that song. It's .. uh .. different.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Don't know why these two bands/songs came to mind after reading Dennis's last post, but here they are.Pretty sure both are mid to late 70s.
