Co-founder of Reddit Aaron Swartz found dead - CBS News

NEW YORK Authorities say a co-founder of Reddit and computer activist who fought to make online content free to the public has been found dead. A spokeswoman for New York's Medical Examiner says 26-year-old Aaron Swartz hanged himself in his Brooklyn apartment. He was found Friday.

Swartz's death was confirmed by his attorney, Elliot Peters, in an email to MIT's The Tech newspaper.
"The tragic and heartbreaking information you received is, regrettably, true," Peters wrote.

Very sad news. Depression plus facing jail time must have become too painful. I'm sorry to hear it

That's what I was thinking. Even without the mental illness, looking at 50 years is enough to cause any man to "crack".

He wasn't sentenced. The trail was supposed to start next month.

I feel terrible hearing this about that great guy. Depression is a b***ch. With the weight of the upcoming trial on his shoulders. Damn! Why didn't he just call a friend or relative! No situation is hopeless.

My cousin committed suicide the day after the Black Monday stock market crash in October of 1987. He was a young regional VP with a large real estate corp in CA. Big income. Leveraged in the market. Lost the bet. Had depression. Felt hopeless. Shot himself. Took a piece of the hearts of family and friends.

Crisis just get magnified when depression is a problem. If you suffer from it, see a doctor.

        How truly sad this is!

I can't imagine anything appearing so horrible and hopeless that you see no other way out, but to take your own life.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

YOU can't imagine it because you're looking at it from your perspective.

Of course I am! I couldn't very well be inside his head with his life experiences that shaped and molded him into the young man he is/was or feel the weight of his personal situation, and corresponding feelings or his emotions now could I?

And don't tell me you can!

I was merely stating that I, myself, can't imagine me, myself, having something appear so horrible and hopeless that I could see no other way out, but to take my own life.

No, I can't. But having had a brother that tied a rope in a tree, stepped on a chair and kicked that chair away, I can say it has touched me personally.

              Speaking from experience sister.

I too have lost somebody to suicide and know that people do indeed fall deep into the throes of desperation and depression where they have their judgement clouded by the darkness of black clouds enveloping them and swirling around them like a cyclone, sucking them in and holding them captive to hopelessness. I can understand and have compassion for them, too.

                But, that wasn't my point.

    Very sad.

This is the ultimate act of self-sabotage -

It was his second that we know of.

Always so tragic (and shocking) especially when someone is/was so young

... and twice as much because the world lost someone with so much potential.

    sux...

I'm in the conspiracy corner still. Reddit is one of the most powerful viral machines on the internet, and Aaron Swartz was probably the most paramount player in the drive to stop SOPA. This is Alex Jones material for sure - but this guy had too much to live for. I know he fought depression, but I don't know. He's gone up against the powerful MPAA - I don't think the threat of a prison sentence would have effected him like this.
