My Aunt's dog, Baby, became very sick tonite.

I took the dog over to the vets, where he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and given 6 months to live.

Rather than have the dog suffer any further, we decided it was best to have him put down.

RIP Baby. I loved him too.

PS: Pray my Aunt gets a new dog very soon. She now needs one.

Sorry to hear that - losing a loved pet is hard. I hope after a short time your
Aunt will be ready for a new friend - and that she'll visit your local shelter to save one of the lovely dogs that too often end up there.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

I hope she does too...Baby helped her through my mom's death...and was the only real friend she had. My dog Hansel bonded to the little guy, so he's going to be taking it hard too. Right now, he's in my lap wondering where his little buddy is.

Floyd - almost lost mine this week, too, so I understand how you feel. I don't, however, know quite what to say to make you feel better other than I am so sorry. I hope the pain subsides enough that she has room in her heart soon for a new silly fuzzy face that is hoping that someone who will love them will find them and take them home.

My condolences, Floyd. Judging from your original post, I think you did the right thing. That's commendable considering the difficult choice that had to be made.

I don't believe he is 'dead', just the body he inhabited while he was here. I believe he's somewhere else, young and vibrant again.

    Hi, Floyd,

One of the things that people who do not own pets fail to understand is that pets aren't some furry (or scaled) creature that gets in the way now and then or serves to amuse us from time to time but they are fully paid up members of the family.

I hope your aunt does visit a rescue centre and saves some unhappy creature from loneliness and despair but make sure that she has a proper period of mourning first so that she can come to terms with her loss and not expect the next dog to 'replace' the one she lost. It can't do that - it can only love her in its own unique way with its own unique character.

Sorry to hear about your loss. We lost one of our dogs about 7 months ago to kidney failure. It was heartbreaking. She was part of the family and we miss her so I know how you feel.

Floyd - Glad you realize Hansel will be mourning. Many people don't realize the bond pets can establish with each other.

The strange experience I've had with my animals was losing my 16 yr old lab/chow Sheba. She was best friends with my female Shephard, Gretta, and Gretta literally went into mourning. She ate little, wouldn't play, went from room to room looking for Sheba day after day. She carried one of Sheba's favorite toys to her bed and laid with her head on it hour after hour.

The strange thing came about 2 weeks after losing Sheba. I was on my computer with Gretta on the floor beside me. All of a sudden she perked up, jumped to her feet and ran to an EMPTY corner of the room. Her tail was wagging, she barked several times. This went on for about 5-10 minutes and she totally ignored me when I called her name as she was totally focused on the empty space in front of her. At the end of the time she stopped barking and just tilted her head and stared.

I don't know what happened that day - but from then on she was back to normal and never looked for Sheba again. If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it.

Yes, the pets do bond together.

I actually had cats die 30 days apart. First cat wandered off never to be seen again (presumed dead due to being eaten by coyotes), the second cat went into a depression and died a month later.

Funny how that works. Reminds me to make sure Hansel gets some special attention for awhile.

    I'm so sorry Floyd.

Makes me so mad when people say "it's just a dog" or it's just a cat", as if it's no big deal. As others have pointed out, pets are loved as part of the family and you have lost a part of your family. It hurts.

I hope your Aunt finds the perfect little creature to help heal her.

    @Kay
Thanks for telling that story, it was lovely. Maybe Sheba came back to say a final goodbye to you all, but only Gretta was able to see her. I like to think all those animals we have loved are running free in some field 'somewhere', just waiting for our time to join them. *sniffle*

I too understand the pain the loss of a pet causes. As I have said before, a replacement is the only real cure. You aren't replacing the irreplaceable, you're filling the gap in your life.

    Hey Floyd,

Sorry to hear about your aunt's dog. I know how it feels. Ilost one with the same problem that was 19 yrs oled, and it took me about 12 yrs to get another dog.

It may take a little while before she gets another, or wants to.

    Again, sorry for the loss.

    Floyd,

I know how hard it is to loose a pet and it's even harder to put one down. That animal was very fortunate that you thought more about him than your own personal grief and doing what many do, which is to try to hang on, even though the animal is suffering.

I hope your aunt finds a new "baby" when she is ready.

When I saw the title, I thought it was a baby (human) who had died. I thought to myself "this must be a real tragedy for the parents" so I looked inside the post.

      (eek!)

The dog will be doing fine, there on the other side.

So sorry Floyd. It must be extra hard for you all as dogs are such good members of the family. Mine never leaves my side and knows and understand every move I make. You aunt should get another asap to try and fill the gap.
