Hi forumers,

Anybody here thinks that the wrestling on TV are real?

It is obvious to me that they are just acting But all the
people support the wrestling just like they are real

Any thoughts? Anybody is a big fan of wrestling?

Thanks !

I think the whole thing is directed. But for the fun of the game I don't think about this when I am watching the games. I guess people chose to be ignorant of the obvious signs just to enjoy the game

      Agreed. They are all given
      direction or scripts to act

Well it's easy to see none of you have a clue about pro wrestling.
It's entertainment. Do you ask if the cast of Lost is really on a hidden Island?
Do you believe there is a Dr. Who?
The only difference is wrestling is live and the danger is real.
IF you don't think it is dangerous, google Owen Hart or Mick Foley.
        Hell in a Cell

Foley then reverted to his Mankind character, who began wearing an untucked shirt with a loose necktie and feuding with The Undertaker. At King of the Ring, the two competed in the second Hell in a Cell match. In one of the most famous matches in professional wrestling history, Foley received numerous injuries and took two dangerous and highly influential bumps. The first one came as both wrestlers were brawling on top of the cell, and Undertaker threw Mankind from a height of sixteen feet and sent him crashing through the Spanish announcers' table. This event also triggered Jim Ross famously shouting "Good God almighty! Good God almighty! That killed him! As God as my witness, he is broken in half!" This fall was planned. According to Foley in Mick Foley's Greatest Hits and Misses, the second was accidental. With both men back on the top of the cell, Undertaker chokeslammed Mankind, and a section of the cage gave way. Foley fell through and hit the ring hard. A chair that had been atop the cage also slammed Foley's head and knocked out a tooth as he hit the canvas. He was also knocked unconscious for a few moments from the impact, but he finished the match after waking up. Although Mankind lost, both wrestlers received a standing ovation for the match, and the event is often said to have jump-started Foley's main event career.
Don't get hung up on if it's real or not, just enjoy the show and the action.

I've seen players bleeding at WWE too.

Personally, I'm skeptical about how WWE works... They look all directed however the matchups seem to be real.

Consider how the 1000s of fans in the arena react when they see any sign of fake in the game? I would have personally flown down to any of the sites where such WWEs are held but then, I've little money to spend on leisures lol.

Hope any insider from WWE is an IM himself and is lurking in these forums somewhere. Then, we could all have a much better point of view on all this!

That's why it's called sports entertainment.
I've been a fan since I was a little kid.
What has always impressed me was what they can do in the ring, night after night.
Sure they know how to fall and how to take a hit and sell it.
But when someone 300 lbs. can jump off the top rope, do a flip and land on someone with neither person getting hurt, I'm impressed.

Exactly. I've also been a fan since my early teens. I used to save my money and go to all the events I could. My friend's dad was an usher and after a few matches, he'd move us from the cheap seats to as close as he could.

I knew then it was fake, but it didn't make it any less fun. I'm a big sports fan and been to many sporting events, and I can honestly say, the most fun I've ever had was at pro wrestling. The fans are hilarious.

Most of them are very skilled athletes...Watching Brutus Beefcake at 350 pounds doing flips off the ropes was pretty amazing.

MMA is great too, but we have to admit Brock Lesnar whipped up on Randy Couture, and Lesnar only had a couple of MMA bouts, so the pro wrestlers are probably pretty tough guys, if Lesnar is any example.

Muhammad Ali admitted he stole his whole persona from Gorgeous George.

I understand if it's not for some, and I don't watch anymore...but the wrestlers should get their due. Their injuries aren't fake and like Hulk Hogan once said, the pain from their injuries is real. Most of them get treated like crap. If they don't wrestle, someone else will take their place, so they often have to perform night after night with pretty serious injuries.

It is most definitely a show, it's entertainment, but it's a show where you can get hurt.

Take the piledriver, for instance. The piledriver is a carefully executed maneuver where one wrestler drops the other on his head on the mat. There have been cases of this maneuver being done poorly, the result being the wrestler getting dropped actually having his neck broken because he was dropped too far. It's only supposed to look like his head hit the mat, not actually have him hit the mat.

Ever heard of the term 'sell it'? Here's what that means: You slap me across the face as hard as you can, but never actually do more than make slight contact, yet I fly backwards and land on my back as if you whacked the heck out of me. That's selling it. It goes on in pro wrestling all the time.

It's choreographed, there's no way to work it without it being that way. Wrestlemania has most likely already chosen the winner weeks ahead of time. Controversy sells tickets and pay per view. Before the wrestlers get into the ring for a match, they already know who's supposed to win this one. That's what makes the money.

But ask any pro wrestler if they get hurt. They get hurt all the time. Broken bones, strains, ripped tendons, concussions, the list goes on. This is dead serious stuff. You can be seriously injured without a drop of blood coming out.

If you don't believe it, take a look at the movie 'Beyond The Mat' and you'll learn a thing or two.

Comedian Andy Kaufman learned a thing or two. He got slapped right out of his chair by Jerry Lawler (but whether it was a stunt or not remains unanswered):

No I don't think it's real but they are really good athletes nonetheless.

Watch someone take a real punch, kick, or knee to the face and you will see that it either will knock them out, cut them, cause swelling, or bruise them. Rarely is this seen in most wrestling of the nature you are talking about especially the knock outs where someone is out cold.

Wakunahum, of course these guys are going to pull their punches. Good Lord, how long a career do you think they'd have if they really actually got the crap knocked out of them? But just because they are pulling their punches doesn't mean they don't stand a real chance of being seriously injured. Things go wrong, people miss their marks, and honestly, do you really think getting hit in the head with a metal folding chair isn't real enough? What about jumping off the top rope and landing on a table which is about 8-10 feet below your feet? I'd have to say that's pretty real. The table will break some of your fall but after it collapses all that's left is a concrete floor. That takes some mighty big balls to jump from that high onto something like that.

Let's put it this way, if a guy is big enough and strong enough to pick me up off the ground and body slam me, that's real enough for me! (I'm 6' tall, 210 lbs.) I have trouble picking myself up out of bed in the morning!

But it's also entertainment. They put on a good show. They know how to get a crowd worked up.

And I might add we could all learn a thing or to as internet marketers by studying the marketing tactics used by the WWE, the WWF, etc.

The way I answered the question had to do with whether it was scripted or an actual real fight. I was answering that it was scripted.

I know people have been hurt before and even unfortunately killed on accident. But even with things like metal chairs, there is a big difference between getting hit when you expect it and getting hit when you expect it by someone trained to swing a metal chair at your head with the least impact possible. Can they hit you harder than they mean to? Of course it can happen but there is still a difference.

One of the most popular wrestling shows in Spain is 'Smack Down'.

In between bouts, there are infomercials broadcast starring the wrestlers in the days programme with a simple message for any children and idiots watching - "Hi, I'm ......... a WWF star and I tell you, please do not try these moves at home. We are trained professional entertainers and have spent years perfecting our craft. Do not try to do what I do in the ring."
Since these are dubbed into Spanish, I presume that these are broadcast all over the world.
Incidentally, when did a microphone become part of a wrestlers kit?

Its real in the sense that there are really big guys throwing each other around. I would imagine there are times that punches get mis-timed and taking even a partial punch from a guy thats 300lbs of muscle is going to hurt.

They do train, they are in pretty good shape, and they are getting pitched, choked, and other behemoths are coming off the top rope to land on them.

    but its orchestrated chaos.

Wrestling ain't real when it's the pro's on TV that wrestles. If they start to bleed it's because they have made a mistake.
And you can't survive many of the throws unless you do what they train all day long to do. Plus they don't try to each other.

You guys do realize that there are wrestling schools that train these guys right? They learn to do flips, throws and then later make up their own signature moves.

There used to be one of these schools not to far from my hometown. While the fight is scripted, the throws and everything are still actually happening.

When you see a wrestler thats 300+ lbs climbing to the top rope to jump, thats still 300+ lbs thats coming down on you, and you can practice that all you like, but unless you know some magic trick that changes the laws of physics, its still going to hurt.

The trick is watching HOW they do the throws and stuff. You cant see it if they are done right, but most of the moves/holds are done in such a way that while it looks painful, the bulk of the wrestler and the way the move/hold is set up keeps it from really doing damage.

Like for instance, a pile driver. If you watch a pile driver happen, between the lats (muscles between your neck and shoulders) on the guy thats getting piledrived, and the quads (thigh muscles) of the guy doing the pile driving, the guys head never really hits the canvas.

Plus anyone one thats ever actually been in a fight can tell you that two muscle bound 300lb guys aren't going to trade blows for 20 minutes at a time. Nobody is impervious from a concussion and a punch with that much muscle and weight behind it is something that will crack a cranium

Professional wrestling is just what it's marketed as: Sports entertainment. However, that doesn't mean that these performers don't put their bodies on the line for our entertainment every night they go out there.

One of my favorite filmmakers, Darren Aronofsky, released a film with Mickey Rourke in it called The Wrestler back around December on the Indie circuit. It received a small awards push and is making its way onto DVD this Tuesday. It looks into the life of a former "big-time" professional wrestler whose fame mirrored that of Hulk Hogan, and how his body has been taxed for so long and how he's fallen from his fame that he's not even a fraction of the man he used to be. It's a pretty chilling look not only at the fall and redemption of a man but it also makes you appreciate professional wrestling a little bit more for the performers who do it, if not for the actual product itself.

I think calling it fake or real is off base these days. We all know the outcomes are predetermined like any show or movie. The guys are performers like any action movie or soap opera, but they only get one take in front of a large audience. I mean falling off a 20 foot ladder, going through tables onto concrete, you can't fake those things, they just know whats happening ahead of time to prepare theirselfs the best way they can.

Professional Wrestling is choreographed high impact entertainment.

To say it is fake would mean that it is trying to be something it is not. There was a time in the good old days when wrestlers tried to claim that everything they did was real, but now even the WWE admits that its entertainment. So, if it isn't trying to be real... then it can't be fake.

Well its full contact sports entertainment. People make loads of
money and get hurt sometimes badly just like American Football.

I used to watch it when Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Hulk,
Hacksaw and co used to be rough and tough ...but not mindlessly
violent. Gave up on it when they started having gang wars and
using chairs, ladders, benches and any other handy metalwork
as weapons. Giants and cattleprods seemed way OTT

Mind you I did kind of like Superfly and the Mexican's aerobatics
