Toast

I had a toast related revelation last night.

I awoke and half asleep I somehow came up with this awesomeness:

Bolognese Toast:

1. Toast a slice of white bread.
2. Butter lavishly.
3. Spread hot bolognese sauce ontop.
4. Few pinches Mozerella.
5. Top with a slice of fresh tomato.
6. Cut into triangles because those taste best.

Others:

Tuna Melt:

1. Mix tuna flakes with mayo and diced onion.
2. Load onto buttered bread.
3. Grate cheddar cheese ontop.
4. Grill until cheese melts.
5. Sandwich it with another slice and grill both sides.
6. Cut into triangles because those taste best.

  • Here's my "Elvis Toast" that I use to make:

Put peanutt butter on one slice of loaf and sliced banana on the other. Put them together to a sandwich and fry it in butter in the pan.

    Yummy!

  • Food dreams? You must have been very hungry.

Try a thick, heavy bread and bake rather than toast so it can stay in toaster oven longer. Cover top of bread with tomato slices, black pepper and Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. Bake it until bread is crispy on outside, hot all the way through and tomato and cheese are hot. Make them open face. These make great tomato steak sandwiches.

Or, you can lightly toast the bread first, spread a little butter quickly, then add the other ingredients and bake until hot.

I've been known to make "grilled cheese" in the toaster oven without butter, it saves a lot of extra calories and napkins.

  • Yummy ideas - thanks.

When my toaster broke last time, I decided I was under-using my George Forman Grill - so now that is my toaster. Works great.

I guess not very original but my favorite toast is still just buttered with cinnamon and sugar.

For 'pipe' dreams - make the toast, butter lightly.

In a Bowl = Teaspoon to Teaspoon:
Hersheys sugar free natural cocoa (dark or light)
    Honey (raw, unfiltered if pos)
    butter

Whip it up and spread it on the toast - calories only from butter -- and honey some, but those are super good for you calories.

(close eyes and pretend you are eating (anything) with guilt-free chocolate frosting).

  • Sounds like a lot of from the lips to the hips here. You have to learn to dream healthier.
  • Open face - melt some cheddar or colby jack on a piece of toast - spread raw diced green onions and tomato on it - then make a couple more. Yum. Try it with Mozerelli and jalapeneos, too.

Don't forget the old stand-by either - cinnamon and sugar.

  • Stuffed french toast

Slice french bread into 1 inch thick slices. Then "butterfly" each slice and stuff it with a mixture of fresh blueberries, blueberry preserves (or pie filling) and cream cheese.

Coat each slice in french toast batter (eggs, milk and vanilla)

    Grill in skillet

Another suggestion: Instead of using margarine or butter to grill a sandwhich, try using mayo. It really makes a good looking and tasting slice of grilled bread.

    • Sounds a LOT like blueberry blintzes - I LOVE those things. Thanks for the tip!

    • I had something similar at IHOP not too long ago...

With eggs, potatoes and a LOT of Coffee...
    • Everybody is tempting me with blueberries. There was a sale on fresh ones, too and I didn't get any because I have strawberries and bannanas in the freezer that I never used for Summer smoothies since we didn't have much summer.

Last night my friend in MA told me on Skype he just made a blueberry pie. Of course that made me starving right there but I thought about how thin I am and how fat he probably is (jealousy @ his pie).

      ... and now this!

      Sounds delish!

(I have lost 20 lbs from this fat faced avatar - (if you could see the rest of the picture under my blazer I couldn't button my slacks) - here I was, coming out of a career in bank tech operations, where we ate giant, fresh bagels and flavored cream cheese, or fresh donuts almost everyday, and birthday cake at least a few times a month minimum - big huge sheet cakes -

...and of course I always had to have either the corner or some roses to get the most frosting. (and always made sure no poor, neglected, dried out donuts were left by the end of the day. (somebody has to care about these 'beings').

I lost the fat in part by removing almost all sugar other than honey. (and walking 4-5 miles per week). Having no fun but looking better @ 109 lbs. in cowboy boots. (deduct something for them)...

  • And something else that's yummy - When you fry bacon, don't throw away the delicious bacon fat. Put some extra oil in the bacon fat and fry slices of loaf in it and then fry some eggs after you've fried the loaf. Then put the bacon on top of the fried loaf slices and then put the eggs on top of the bacon.

I ate it for 10 minutes ago and I almost got a mouthgasm.
  • Had this for the first time whilst visiting family in the UK -

Toast bread, apply butter then add the marmite. It has a strange taste, but it's great.

  • Funny...so are Marmots

  • @Daniel - I had to google bolognese sauce to see what it was. I'm glad it wasn't creamed bologna.

It actually sounds good. I'd throw some pepperoni on your Bolognese Toast and be a happy camper.

Reading this thread has made me hungry. Time to go rummage through the 'fridge.

    • Why I eat it daily!

      Some great suggestions!

Anything french toast is awesome though I think US and UK versions differ!

  • Daniel Evans? Is that really your new picture/avatar or is it Ringo Starr - it (you?) sure do look like him! (the most well preserved surviving beatle)

What is UK french toast like?
    • [2] replies
  • You're from the UK so it's probably no revelation - but humans could absolutely survive on beans on toast. (Bachelor's!)
  • My favorite toast:

    White bread
    Butter generously
    Sugar generously
    Cinnamon (optional)
    set oven to broil
broil for about 2 -5 minutes
  • My contribution:

    1) Take two slices of golden toast.
    2) Put anything you want on them.
    3) Enjoy.
