Harvard professor seeks "adventurous" woman to give birth to Neanderthal clone - CBS News

"Like a storyline pulled from the movie "Jurassic Park," a professor at Harvard University says he can clone a long-extinct Neanderthal baby. The only hitch is that he needs a woman who is willing to carry the offspring..."
  • I'm sure they could find a woman that would do it If they can break down what dangers. WOuld a regular woman be able to

There certainly are some risks, but it's actually not so unusual around here in the 'hood. All that this Harvard professor needs to do is is go around to a few local bars using the thread title as a pick-up line. After a nice candle-lit dinner in the lab, romantic music, a few drinks, the ambient metronome sounds of pumping apparatus, a few more drinks, etc ... then soon the act of producing an exact Neanderthal clone becomes a non-issue.

If he did get someone - what is going to happen to the baby? There are several questions regarding the ethics of this.

It's not going to happen*. This professor has a history of promoting controversial ideals. He promoted the idea of altering human genetic make-up to combat disease. Very far out stuff.

      * I hope.

Just one of many hair-brained ideas that show even if something is scientifically possible, it should never be done. Just because you can is no excuse to do something.

They said it couldn't be done until human cloning was acceptable. WHAT!!?!?!?!?!?!? They are NOT talking about a human! They don't know WHAT a neanderthal was like, or how similar we are. The clone may not be a true clone, etc... It is UNETHICAL, REGARDLESS of laws.

Yeah, how can they be totally sure how true a clone it would be? It was so long ago and the genome was sequenced with bits and pieces. Could something be altered, missing, mutated?

Yep, raise a child with the IQ of a 12 year old, (for life) and someone who will be tested to death by scientists?

Doesn't sound like much of a life!

But as someone else has mentioned there is always Hollywood, the circus or the comedy circuit?

If he or she gets smart enough, it may even be able to get compensation for doing it in the first place?

In the distant future when they start bringing back Saber tooth's, Mammoths and Tazzie Tigers, etc, then it will have a better chance.

        But now, time will tell?

Hmmmm, some world leaders definitely, but for WF members, l think that we are a pretty clever bunch overall!

Although outside of the WF, as it has been shown by posting YouTube videos, there are plenty of people out there, that would be outclassed by a Neanderthal.

Bring back a genius Neanderthal?????

I would rather see a dinosaur than someone who looks like a Klingon stand-in!

That explains this one, eh? I'm still trying to find the guy on CL that offered a time travel experience. Damn - I guess I was too late.

If someone were actually going to clone a neanderthal, they wouldn't need a human. All they would need is test tubes and laboratory. If they have workable DNA, someone might have already pulled this one off somewhere. Not something they're going to tell the world, I'm sure.

Actually, the most efficient way is through an ovum. They figure humans are the closest, so they use a human ovum. THEN, it needs an environment. They haven't managed to simulate that yet, so they need a surrogate. AGAIN, closest to human, so the surrogate should be human. So rather than wait DECADES for the technology to MAYBE allow it, they want to use a human woman to do it NOW.

Hopefully for the woman the next headline isn't "Harvard Scientist Finds Average Size of a Neanderthal at Birth is 35 pounds."

THAT would be something. In theory, the ratio would be about the same, and I think the human ratio is like 3 or 4 to one, a woman here that had a child could correct me if I am wrong. If the ratio is 3 to 1, a 35 pound child could add 105 to her weight. THAT and the offset in the center of gravity would likely mean she couldn't walk, assuming she could even handle it. The average person that is 35pounds is FOUR years old!!!!!!! YIKES!

And if that volunteer is coming from one of the universities, well, it's just one more indication that we are all in big trouble.
