6th sense .. do you believe?

Today at church I had the overwhelming feeling to leave and go home.

I get that a lot, as i am NOT religious ( I only go to make my wife happy ) HA semi joke

However this morning... it was palatable. After several whispered arguments
I left the family there and went home.

I found TWO firefighters on my roof. Spraying the trees next to my house.

YUP. that's what i said WTF... The house next to mine was char, hardly recognizable.
evidently my house had embers fall on the roof and in the trees.

My house is completely unharmed, it will take a few days but i don't even think
i have smoke damage.

but again... why did i want to go home so bad? It was almost over powering.
I did not feel like there was something wrong.. just off ...not right

probably coincidence.

But, maybe not...

How about you? do you have some ... i cant explain it... but this crazy thing happened?

I definitely believe in a sixth sense. I think it may have been a true "sense" at one time that was subjugated as the human species evolved.

I know my animals have such a sense and I've seen it displayed on several occasions. I call it a "gut feeling" and I've learned (the hard way) not to ignore it.

        I agree with Kay completely.

I also experience it, the sixth sense as you refer to it as. Sometimes, I refer to it as a foreboding and sometimes I refer to it as just knowing. It depends on the particular "feeling" that accompanies it.

What you felt was probably very significant.

If you continue to follow that kind of gut instinct you can significantly increase your quality of life.

I agree and have seen animals particularly with dogs acting strangely at times and weird stories that I have heard. I also think that we also had these senses more so in times gone past, but due to the crap in our water, air and food it has gradually elapsed.

When I was in 3rd grade we heard some distant sirens. I stood up in class and announced, "I have to go, that's my house." Another kid on the other side of the room said, "It is his house."

Now, I was new to this school and didn't know the other kid who said it was my house, and I wasn't one to just stand up like that and blurt something out.

Naturally we were both chastised for our outburst.

When I got off the bus (we lived in the country) and I started up the hill toward my house, a neighbor girl whose house I had to go past on the way home, came running out and yelling, "Your barn burned down, Your barn burned down."

Sure enough, our barn, western tack store, and a second barn had all burned to the ground. We lost some horses too.

Another time I was at the stock car races and knew I was going to win a rod and reel. I told everyone I was with it was mine. When they announced the winning number, that was the number on my ticket stub. I indeed won.

Another time while playing poker, one of the games where you get some "down" cards you can't look at until after you bet, I had a "hunch" I had a pair of kings down. I had one in my hand, and since three kings is a pretty good poker hand, I bet the max. My down cards were indeed the pair of kings I saw flash in my mind before I saw the cards.

Sixth sense? Yeah, I believe in it. Don't really know how it works but wish it would work on demand instead of being just random events I have no control over.

My wife seems to "know" when something (normally bad) is going to happen. It could be 2 days before a plane crash for example when she gets agitated and distressed. Ive been with her for 15 years and seen it many times to know when it is happening so yes, I do believe in a 6th sense...

Early on in our marriage, hubby wanted to go on a snowmobiling trip with his buddies. I told him he shouldn't go because I had a bad feeling that he would get hurt. He shrugged it off and marked it up to me just not wanting him to go for a weekend with his buddies. I worried the whole time he was gone.

Two days later, I heard car doors slam out in the driveway and looked out to see two of his buddies, one on each side, practically dragging him to the house as he couldn't walk on his own and was in excruciating pain. I promptly took him to the emergency room where we discovered that he had herniated two discs, one thoracic, one lumbar.

After that, he sometimes would listen to me and sometimes would blow me off depending on how badly he wanted to do something, but the morning I kissed him goodbye as he left for work and told him that he was going to have John's (his boss') job, clinched it for him.

Upon arriving at work, his boss called him into the office and told hubby he was moving on and had just put in his two weeks notice and had recommended hubby as his replacement. Two weeks later he was promoted to Quality Engineer Manager.

Since then, he listens every time I tell him that I "sense" something.

And I, like Dennis, wish I knew how to turn it on upon command, lol!

The sixth sense is that of thought. They don't call it that because the five senses are physical while thought isn't.

No it isn't. We only use the term "sixth sense" to describe ESP because it was traditionally believed there were only five physical senses - a belief that dates back to Aristotle. We now know there are anywhere up to 21 physical senses, but the term "sixth sense" is still a useful shorthand.

Actually both terms "6th sense" and ESP are generic terms.
While you Sean are trying to pinpoint something as THE 6th sense, Frank was actually pointing out that is was used more as a generic term nowadays.

          As far as ESP,well,read this.

Yep, Casinos, know about 6th sence, (although they will never publicly admit it) that is why the dealer swoops his or her hands over the cards.

There is no reason to do it other than mess up peoples intuitive sence on what cards have the highest numbers!

Another interesting thing about this was, on Sep, 11, about 90% of people who normally go to the World Trade Centre, to work, etc didn't go. And the odd 5000 who where left, did.

    Wow, very neat stories here!
@Dennis, you are right! If we could only get this sense on demand!

@Terra, it's funny how husbands learn the hard way to listen! :p

I once "smelled" my ex-husbands cancer. I knew he had cancer, but he wouldn't listen to me. It was the old "doctor or lawyer" threat! After an MRI (and a lot of other test first), they found it, kidney cancer, it's pretty rare.

The doctor still cannot accept that I could "smell" it, but the cancer was only about 1/8 of an inch from reaching the outside wall and from there, it would have spread to his other organs, killing him.

There's more, but way too depressing. It is always best, even if it turns out to be nothing, to listen to you gut! And, as with Kay, watch and listen to your animals! That goomba in my avatar saved my life!

OMG! That was hilarious Dennis! I do know of dogs that are trained for that! I still, to this day, cannot explain why I could smell it. And, trust me, it took me three times to post that!

I feel.. with my sixth sense... that if more people would realize that we all have the ability, we just need to tune into it. People get trained to ignore it. Kids, animals and my left knee are super intuitive! (Ok, that last part was only for the weather, but real, non the less).

I'll go with a sixth sense in some form, possibly our brain processing information that we don't conciously realize we have or able to put together just by wanting to do it. Since we aren't supposed to discuss religion on any part of this forum, I can't get into what else I believe and know about it.

I was just going to post that people can indeed stay in tuned with them as adults as I find them to be more active after sitting and contemplating many things and after sessions of meditation/prayer.

We all have these "instincts" but society (and poisoning that Kay mentions, along with 24/7 connection to electro or electro-magnetic impulses) has sequestered them. They are still there but we have to learn to pay attention to them again. They are usually so subtle that we miss them - every once in awhile they will hit us strong enough to notice. What we have to do is remember the physical feelings that accompany these knowings so we can recognize them when not so magnified. They are ALWAYS there so actually if you learn to listen to them they are more or less "on demand".

Staying away from cell phones and computers, etc every day for awhile helps to strengthen the signals - so does walking on real earth barefoot (grounds the electromagnetic field correctly). Taking walks and letting your mind drift and do what it wants to also helps - and strengthens creativity as well. Natural impulses don't work as well when everything we immerse ourselves in is unnatural.

I get this feeling from my animals Sal. And, the nature around me!! When I've just had enough, there's nothing like spending time with my animals. Or, I go chop wood, whatever, it always involves outside! Nature will tell you what you need to know, only if you listen.

When I end up spending my day inside on the "unnatural", I always feel depressed somehow.

Yep. All my dogs have always known when I am on the way home. My ex's and roommates have told me each of them have gone to the door and sat and waited about 10 minutes before I get home. I always knew about that long before my exs would get home, too. It was a convenient knowing to be sure. LOL.

Yes I believe in sixth sense and it has saved me many times especially when I am driving my car.

A few years ago I was driving and my husband was a passenger and I stopped at a green light. He asked me why I stopped and just as I turned to talk to him a car speed through the red light from the other direction. If I had not stopped he would have hit us and probably killed one or both of us. This kind of thing has happened a few times and now if he is a passenger with me he never asks but just looks at what will happen.

We have been saved many times by that odd sense I sometimes have.

over the years. The older i get, the more I discount them.

I have never gotten a "complete picture " as far as ... do this, or don't do that ...

Just weird feelings... like the hair on the back of my neck standing up... when about to
    enter a sticky situation.

I dunno, i have ignored it a few times. I learned pretty quick, NOT to do that.
I never won the lottery or anything cool like that.

When it comes to intuitive things like this we can only go on our own experience, but I have found that the more I look for synchronicity, the more I find it. Its like the Forrest/ Tree's thing. It's always there, but it seems to increase when it knows you are aware and watching for it. I believe its a tools for us, that engages even more when we are seeking it. No reason to engage if a person isnt even going to notice or use it , right?

God usually gives people signs and they call it a coincidence and insult him, in my own thinking... The people who notice it and look for it, get it more.

I tend to call it "synchronicity"... if you actively engage your self in it, and deliberately intend that synchronicity will be revealed to you in your life, then it will make bringing things to your awareness a part of the chronological order of the events in your life, you are calling on it and attracting it "Hey, let me know whats going on before you pull something off. Im watching".

I had a conversation about this 7 hours ago.

I've been relishing in these events in past weeks. Fridays was astounding.

I sat down to watch a comedy DVD which I hadn't seen before. The room was cold so I decided to light the fire before playing it. Whilst doing this I realized the marble mantle was dirty with coal marks and dusty so I went and grabbed a random spray bottle and a duster from the cupboard.

Whilst cleaning I realized the spray bottle had a generic name: "Window Cleaner".

I cracked a joke aloud: "The best thing about this window cleaner is, it doesn't whilstle!" (Guys in the UK who work as window cleaners tend to whistle a lot).

After cleaning I sat down to watch the DVD and the first ten minute segment was about window cleaners and their annoying whistling.

      Splendid stuff.

Wow... Now if that didnt happen all the time then people could say it was coincidence (aweful ironic for a coincidence I think though), however when you really watch it DOES happen ... I wish I was disciplined enough to count all the times it happens and keep track. At least daily Im sure.

Maybe this thread will get us all putting it down for the record.

    I certainly do believe.

I've reluctantly hired people the boss approved and they've let me down as I felt they would.

I've stopped or slowed my car for no reason other than getting some kind of warning feeling, and have avoided serious accidents that would have happend had I not slowed down or stopped. A person hopping out of a city bus from the second lane, not curb lane. A car going through a red light...

I saw the Columbine High School shooters in a mall a couple of weeks before that horrible tragedy. We just walked by each other is all. They sure did rub me the wrong way, but I had no vision of what they were going to do. I wish it was more than just a bad feeling about them so I could have gone to the police with something.

Something definitely reaches our brain first, in my opinion.

Dogs are also used to provide early warning of epilepsy seizures in humans.
Bed bug detection as well for that matter.

Some controversial research on the sixth sense phenomena, 911 is touched upon:
    The EGG Story
Global Consciousness Project - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, re: 911, I recall the widely reported numbers being that approximatley 30,000 people should have been in those buildings at the time it happened.

Even though I am Deaf, I do have the 6th sense. One time, I was dropped off at my apartment in San Francisco State University campus and sensed that a friend might go to jail next day. Sure enough, she was arrested and went to jail next day for domestic violence because her ex girlfriend was pressured to report cops on her by her friend who disliked a friend so much. A friend was in a trouble a few years later, then finally moved back to Hawaii after staying in AZ because a very straight gal filed restraining order against a friend for sexual harassment.

Airlines often report a massive amount of warning phone calls before plane crashes, too. We know.

If you consider Einstein's theory that we only sense time as linear because of our conscious placement in space time while the reality is everything is happening all at once, it makes a lot of sense that we are able to somewhat breach the veil that separates our immediate perception from the rest of reality.

One thing I don't believe in is premonitions.

...but I knew I was going to say that!

    @ Kim Kula,

Back in the 80's, I was at work when my intuition told me to get to Lake Huron, quickly. That was about a five-six hour drive.

I arranged for a sub to fill in for me and went home. My parents were visiting at the time. When I arrived home, I threw a bunch of clothes etc. into my luggage bags.

My Mom asked me what I was doing. I couldn't explain, I just said I've got to get to Lake Huron. She looked at me like I was right off my rocker!

As I was on my way out the door, the phone rang. My Grandfather had just suffered a massive heart attack and died.

It was my Mom who answered the phone - She came running out, as I was just pulling out in my car, and gave me the news.

I then knew the reason for my erratic behavior.

    I can see dead people.

No, not really, but I trust my gut feelings about other people. I walk away if something feels funny.
